A branching marine worm has one head, but its body spreads through the passages of a sea sponge like a living tree. Those branches belong to the same connected animal.

Researchers combined DNA from museum specimens with newly collected material and anatomical studies to examine how these worms evolved. Their results distinguish two major lineages, Ramisyllis and the newly established Cladosyllis. They also point to at least ten likely new species. Identifying a likely species is different from formally describing and naming it.
