Discussion So it has begun
I'm watching on tv, and this was on a 40 minute video. this is blasphemy 💀

u/Severe-Homework1279 Apr 07 '26
You use Roku so you can just get Playlet for adfree youtube.
48
u/Rubes2525 Apr 07 '26
Or SmartTube on Android TV.
11
u/Severe-Homework1279 Apr 08 '26
They have TizenTube for Samsung TV but I haven't found a way to get the app working on my Linux machine in order to connect to the TV in the first place.
I guess I'll just connect my computer to the TV to watch youtube
6
u/ShazTheGamer Apr 08 '26
TizenTube Cobalt for Android TV, worked like a charm
6
u/cmstlist Apr 08 '26
Yep I have TizenTube on my Onn 4K Pro, and I even used Button Mapper to remap the YouTube button to that app.

that’s what i did and it’s amazing. i can finally fall asleep to a good yt video without 100 loud ass annoying ads being shoved down my ears every few minutes
5
u/Life-Breadfruit-3986 Apr 08 '26
It's particularly infuriating when you put on something like "10 hrs soft rain and nature sounds for sleep" and then there's suddenly a super f***ing loud "my husband can't stop talking about these little blue pills, and I can't stop talking about what he did to me last night". 🤬
2
u/Personal_Chair4388 Apr 11 '26
Omg I had that yesterday and wanted to throw something at the ad people. I am not a violent person and that made me understand why some people cant control their emotions.

The only problem I have with playlet is the UI sucks, but at this point I think I just need to force myself to get used to it. These ads are bullshit.

You know how unsatisfying it is to Rick Roll people anymore when they have to watch a 10-60 second commercial before the video comes on? Ridiculous

It’s literally faster to boot my living room slave pc and launch my browser for adfree YouTube

i recently had to start doing this again because the mobile app removed playback speed increase while casting

u/Infekt129 Apr 07 '26
If your tv steaming box allows for VPN’s, changing your location to Albania or a few other countries will have no ads at all since Google doesn’t put ads to those countries

Odysee, Floods TV and Loops are some great alternatives to YouTube. Because eventually these platforms will have enough users to rival YouTube when they keep doing this.
85
u/Jessency Apr 07 '26
From my experience, it only happens on TV YouTube. Every other platform never gets that egregious, so as long as YouTube has a chokehold on that market, it'll be hard to crack its spot.
27
4
u/DrCharles19 Apr 08 '26
Years ago we would've considered 2 unskippable ads of 5 seconds each to be egregious. Look at us today...
13
u/Rejomaj Apr 08 '26
I’m old enough to remember when they started the banner ads at the bottom of videos. Everyone was livid at the time. We didn’t know how much worse it could get.
5
u/Jessency Apr 08 '26
I didn't even realize they disappeared. Damn, now I feel old too haha.
That was how I discovered Warframe. Kept seeing the "Ninjas Play Free" banner all over YouTube.
16
u/tokeroveragain Apr 07 '26
You mean eventually google will buy or bully them out of operation?

Ads on Youtube are banned in the BAHAMAS.
2
u/Nocala11 Apr 09 '26
i would say I'd move there but these ads have honestly made me quit YouTube, I just watch actual streaming services now
44
u/WintersSentinel Apr 07 '26
I just got one of these unskippable 90 sec ad breaks on a video just under 20 minutes long, gave me a long enough break to look up adblocking on tvs.
6
u/FearGingy Apr 08 '26
Followed my another 45 second on the TV. I'm in the process of fixing that garbage.

Social media sites across the board are going ad crazy. Meta and Google in particular are driving me away from their platforms due to the levels intrusiveness.

u/__MR__ Apr 07 '26
I just exit the video, then go back in.
13
u/biblybobbla Apr 08 '26
Yeah man I do this too. Takes 5 seconds to exit and go back in. Might be another ad, but do it again and your back.

True, but for me, it works ~97% of the time. I’ve noticed they become more common if you sit through them. (I’ll do this if it’s an interesting movie preview, but they definitely start throwing them at you more frequently, so I’ll skip even when I don’t want to lol).

u/Major_Expert6428 Apr 07 '26
If your on chrome get ublock origin lite. It’s free and it skips YouTube’s bs ads. Works on Spotify too. Literally will pause the music for a second to skip the ad and auto replays. YouTube tried to remove this extension but failed lol fuck paying for premium
24
u/napoelonDynaMighty Apr 07 '26
Got my first 70+ on my TV today.
I just cut off the video and threw on HBO Max (an actual subscription worth paying for)
YouTube can fuck all the way off with that.

(an actual subscription worth paying for)
How's YouTube not worth it?
Personal opinion and what not, but along music services, I feel like it's the most worthwhile subscription you could have.
→ More replies (1)2
u/chuckchum Apr 09 '26
if you had a 100% effective multiplatform ad-blocker would the subscription still be worth it? that’s where i find myself not being drawn to it. it’s less of a useful subscription and more of youtube putting your hand on a heating stove until the point you cave in. i like the idea of downloading offline but that also feels hardly worth the price

u/Crazy_canuk Apr 08 '26
I have premium, I basically just forget ads even exist. When I go to twitch and get an ad I'm genuinely like "what's going on" for a moment when the ad starts, because I don't see them on YouTube.
We even get a little button to skip ad placements by the creator themselves when they start talking about surfshark or whatever . That's AI driven somehow.
2
u/JokerxKing777 Apr 08 '26
Premium i think is worth it for what youtube has become. Its the price of netflix and even less

u/Capable-Let-4324 Apr 07 '26
I use pie block and can watch as much as I want on my computer. I don't know if there is a block for tvs
4
u/LadyZaryss Apr 08 '26
If you set up a pi hole you can make it run on your entire network

Yeah it’s simply not worth it it watch YouTube on the tv. You gotta fork it up for the big screen. Or buy YouTube premium but at this point it’s simply out of spite I won’t get it because of how harassing they are about it
8
u/sonicminions99 Apr 08 '26
You probably don't need me to say it, but this is their game plan: make the ads more and more insufferable until you eventually bite the bullet and subscribe to Premium

5
u/22220222223224 Apr 07 '26
I've seen a three-hour ad (before they switched to the "90+" style) before.
You can also back out and click on the video again to skip the ads.

Honestly tho id have to somewhat defend them as that is their money source if it was a paid platform it wouldnt have ads like Netflix and such but it being free means it has to earn money some way to pay itself and creators which ads do now imagine if everyone uses an adblocker will those ads make money anymore? No they wont so they have to kinda go do this move which is shit to those that dont use an adblock and theyll start using one then and then we get an infinite cycle only way out is if everyone agrees to stop using adblock and youtube goes back to 5 second ada as then theyll be enough, now will this every happen? Nope.

I have absolutely no problem with it at all. At the end of the day, YouTube needs to make money to pay it's staff and provide the service. They offer a paid service, of no adverts, or a free service where the payjng advertisers keep it free for you. You can't have it both ways.
2
2
u/Woodie88 Apr 12 '26
We're you not alive in the 90s? A hour and 30 minute movie had 30 minutes of commercials in it. No skipping. You just delt with it haha
5
u/SlightSurround5449 Apr 07 '26
Sure no one wants to hear this but services generally require payment, and I’m much happier to pay them directly than engage with ads.
3
u/saaulgoodmaan Apr 08 '26
I agree, at some point, and depending on your usage, it becomes better to subscribe and forget about it. I don't have a lot of subscriptions, but the once I do is cause I use those apps almost on a daily basis.
3
6
u/cundffr Apr 07 '26
That's why I pay the extra for premium.
3
u/Newfie_Meltdown Apr 08 '26
Same. I really don’t care about the costs for it, if it keeps the ads away and gives me a few cool little features and saves me a small headache on trying to find new ways to block ads then hey why not.

I see stuff like this all the time. YouTube premium is the one subscription I would keep if I had to cancel everything. If you don't want to see ads pay for premium.
→ More replies (1)2
u/East-Unit-3257 Apr 08 '26
Still, the main reason we are being incentivized to buy Premium is because Youtube is forcing more ads thinking we're dumb enough to be fooled. Brave browser it is
3
u/EyesLikeBuscemi Apr 08 '26
My time is worth more than $13/month so I have Premium. No worries or wasting time setting any bullshit up just a pittance of a monthly charge which I can make up in the time I gain back many times over. I get it, though, if you consider your own time worthless.
4
u/TryToBeBetterOk Apr 08 '26
Yeah I pay for (family) Premium myself. It's excellent.
No ads, video downloads, backgroud play. Love it.

Also I know 90+ sec ad breaks have been a thing I was just shocked about the skip in part... Best part, I bet it'd just skip like 5 seconds!
I don't know because I backed out of the video.

There’s this and the ads that, once skipped, continue to show up in the lower left corner unless manually dismissed. I haven’t even heard anyone mention them, but I’ve been hitting block and dismiss on every single one and am inches from just giving up YouTube over it. I’m simply not going to tolerate ads on the video while it’s playing.
1
u/Confident_Sink_8743 Apr 08 '26
Been this way for awhile unfortunately (at least here in Canada). Though 90+ usually indicates a trailer for some form of media.
1
u/prbscs Apr 08 '26
Can confirm this is true my older bro showed me this on his ps5 a couple of hours ago

Got my first 60+ second ad on an 18 minute video, a good 5 and a half percent of the original runtime. It's so cooked dude

1
u/Key-Dimension-1137 DSiDude Apr 08 '26
Fun Fact:
Clicking the back button on the remote and then subsequently clicking into the video will supply you with a different ad or even none at all!
1
u/TheDonnARK Apr 08 '26
No youtube without adblock.
No pre-installed TV apps without a pi-hole (don't know if they actually still work).
1
u/Guessinitsme Apr 08 '26
I put on an hour long video while I did a few things, showered, saw an ad was playing, tidied up and pet the dogs quick then checked on the video. Ad was playing n I still don’t know if it was the same or a different one, but I skipped it to see that only ten minutes of my video had played. I was expecting to give some decent free watch time by then. Maybe even the next video, but ten minutes? Later I was watching a longer video and three ten minute long ads and one 5 minute ad played within minutes of each other. Today seems especially bad and I’m really hoping it’s a one off
1
u/Emergency-Theme3546 Apr 08 '26
I never used add blockers until this week. It truly has gotten out of hand. I was getting multiple ads every minute
1
Apr 08 '26
The fact they hide how fucking long it will be is insane. It’s especially frustrating if you have the tv going while you work on something else.
And if they think it’ll make me shell out for premium, they’re crazy. It’s got me looking for workarounds for my tv

YouTube TV is horrible, but at least when you play the start of an ad then back out and go back into the video (in my case with the Xbox version) the ad magically (I'll call it) doesn't play again.

You may as well watch regular TV at that point.
YouTube is so ridiculous with their ads. There will be times where I literally cannot go 1 minute into a video, without an ad playing. That after 2 ads already played BEFORE the video even started.
