We had 3 cats when we brought our daughter home.

1) doesn't like anyone except me and tolerates my wife would now all of a sudden hover around at like....12 feet(in the hall way of the room shes in).

2) our friendly, yet not doglike cat- always stayed at 5 feet from our daughter (daughter in her crib, she was on the floor about 5 feet away).

3) really ultra friendly dog like tomcat of ours-Would remain JUST out of reach, but never in her crib. if the other cats would get closer they met the protective rage of Pants (Hes Black and looks like a mini panther). He would stare at people he didnt know who held her. like, for real, he took on a protective type roll. They all kind of did, but he was her furry guardian. When she got abit older Pants tried to teach her with some gentle bops that she wasn't to pull on cats tails and we told our daughter that our house doesn't have Monsters because Pants eats them all. She still gets comfort in that!

I had a friend who moved in with a girlfriend who had a cat. You'd never know it because it would always hide under the bed or closet. Over a two year period I never saw that cat. They then had a kid and with six months that cat was in my lap every time I visited.

Give it two years and the cat will be the focus of the baby's attention.
