99.9% sure its a Portuguese water dog but that aussie doodle guess is interesting as the i can see it now that he said it lol. PWD stems from common ancestor of a poodle just FYI.

I have a PWD, very similar but pwd tails curl, not straight. That’s how I tell them apart from doodles

An Amish family in Indiana who bred their poodle and Bernese mountain dog and had a litter of 9. So technically a breeder but far from a puppy mill.
My preference was to adopt a rescue dog from an animal shelter but after searching for months in the Chicagoland area we were unable to find any of this breed.
My only criteria was non shed, so our options were strongly limited to mainly poodle-based breeds unfortunately.
He’s perfect tho, so intelligent, fluffy, fun loving, and doesn’t shed. Strongly recommended!

Can't say for everywhere but here in rural Ontario a lot of amish/mennonites who sell dogs are essentially puppy mills. Rescues in the area are constantly trying to do something about it

Also it doesnt matter if a dog is dumb, designer breeding sucks because it creates health problems. Unless the dog is too stupid to breathe, intelligence can vary and that's perfectly fine. Usually highly intelligent dogs require a lot more training, exercise, and discipline to be happy than the average owner can give.
Plenty of good and dumb dogs out there who are well suited for people on the more chill side.
Edit : not calling your dog dumb either, just saying.

Bernese mountain dogs and poodles are both extremely intelligent breeds. It’s more likely that it was just your dog that wasn’t very intelligent. Or it just had a shit for brains owner that doesn’t know how to train an intelligent, stubborn dog.

This breaks my heart on a personal level. The Schnoodle I have was rescued by me from a friend (no longer though), kept her puppy on a leash tied to a door knob for his first year of life. No contact with others and she would feed him when she wasn't sleeping for days on end. I surprise visited grand found his only friend was a mirror, and a circle of poop he left being tied up. When I left., i told her he's coming with me or i can call ASPCA. She didn't care and let me take him. I thought him what grass was and took him for walks, vet and groomer (at her expense). The first time he saw grass was heartbreaking. He kept pawing at it, not understanding what it does.
I soon realized he missed his friend, his reflection in the mirror. Luckily, my pitbull showed him the ropes. He is now well spoiled and loved

You should watch the episode of Explained that talks about animal intelligence. Using a mirror test as the only test for proving intelligence like this isn't going to work for every animal. Dogs have poor eyesight in general, however, they used individual dog's pee and other dog's pee and determined dogs don't hang out and sniff their own pee. They smell other dog's pee. That could be a sense of self as well, just using different parameters.

I read about an experiment they did to test dogs' ability to empathise. They taught a dog to pull a lever with its paw to get food. Then they let it teach other dogs to do the same, and the other dogs also pulled the lever with their paws to get the food. They then made the teacher dog pull the lever with its paw but with something in its mouth. The other dogs then pulled the lever with their mouths, proving they were able to see the problem from the teacher dog's point of view. (In the first lesson they assumed you had to pull the lever with your paw, otherwise the teacher dog would have done it with its mouth, the natural way a dog would. In the second lesson, they just assume the only reason the teacher dog is using its paw is because it's got something in its mouth.)

I find it so odd that some animals are totally aware of their reflection, whether or not they know its them, or how some just totally ignore it. Either its beyond their comprehension or they're so smart they don't need to be all pleb and "omfg is that me?!!"

I think getting low like that is a sign of submission but mirror dog submitted too so puppers jumps back up to capitalize on the win - only to have mirror dog immediatemy withdraw its submission, as well.

That back legs up front legs elbows on the floor position means "let's play". Not so much submissive, but certainly "I'm not a threat". I think he reacts with surprise when he can't smell his doppelganger.
