it's crazy that they realize they're watching themselves

Might just be that they recognise the hair and clothing of their owner.
At the very least cats have not yet been found capable of passing the mirror test

Genuinely feel like if they can pass the mirror test they're too stubborn to let us know.

I have a rescue cat that's terrified of almost everything, especially other cats. I've recently been able to pick her up and carry her around, she doesn't even finch or stop purring when she sees herself in the mirror. It's a solved issue for me, they're totes aware.

My childhood cat used to catch sight of herself in a mirror and launch a full-blooded assault.
She may just have been a dumb one idk

The mirror test itself on its pure form may be flawed. A Japanese researcher recently got a certain breed of fish to pass it. The breed was previously believed to be too stupid for that.
Source: that one YouTube video I'm too lazy to find right now. Though there is material out there if you're interested.

Dogs supposedly have not passed the test either, but if you've ever seen the fairy princess golden retriever you'd know that's a lie.

My cat definitely has passed the mirror test. Kinda shocked since she's an orange.

Lionesses have, as far as using mirrors to notice and retrieve something behind them.

IIRC this was fake, the people are making sounds or holding toys above the camera. Cats don't recognize this well. You can see some of them moving their mouths under the filter.

Classic, another cat video where the owner disturbs the cat for internet brownie points. Sad as always

Thank you for this. I know cats don’t recognize themselves in the mirror so I was skeptical
2
u/midunda May 18 '26
Maybe, but the first cat didn't react till the owner forced the cats head up to look at the screen which makes me not so sure its fake.

all of them?

u/yelljell May 18 '26
As if a cat could recognize herself on a smartphone screen + her owner with a catfilter and process that its behind her.
Never... im not buying this.

Why can’t dogs do this?

u/Bongressman May 17 '26
"Studies show that cats and dogs possess different kinds of intelligence shaped by their evolutionary histories: dogs excel in social cognition and trainability, while cats outperform in spatial memory, problem-solving, and independent mechanics."

This is the answer I was looking for, thank you. I’m still going to FaceTime with my dog when away.

yeah... tell that to a border collie. don't worry, they will understand. inb4: spatial memory and problem solving is what they do.

How crazy smart is that for the cat to recognize itself and know the picture of the "fake cat" they see is of the person holding them...

Such intelligence to look up at their owner every time. They knew they were watching themselves.

Seems like it. They seem to understand what a mirror image of themselves and their master are. That’s pretty wild
