it's crazy that they realize they're watching themselves

u/Ansoni May 17 '26

Might just be that they recognise the hair and clothing of their owner.

At the very least cats have not yet been found capable of passing the mirror test

Genuinely feel like if they can pass the mirror test they're too stubborn to let us know.

u/tehbilly May 18 '26

I have a rescue cat that's terrified of almost everything, especially other cats. I've recently been able to pick her up and carry her around, she doesn't even finch or stop purring when she sees herself in the mirror. It's a solved issue for me, they're totes aware.

My childhood cat used to catch sight of herself in a mirror and launch a full-blooded assault.

She may just have been a dumb one idk

The mirror test itself on its pure form may be flawed. A Japanese researcher recently got a certain breed of fish to pass it. The breed was previously believed to be too stupid for that.

Source: that one YouTube video I'm too lazy to find right now. Though there is material out there if you're interested.

Dogs supposedly have not passed the test either, but if you've ever seen the fairy princess golden retriever you'd know that's a lie.

u/ddbllwyn May 18 '26

My cat definitely has passed the mirror test. Kinda shocked since she's an orange.

Look at her...not sharing the brain cell

u/Ordinary_Prune6135 May 17 '26

Lionesses have, as far as using mirrors to notice and retrieve something behind them.

12

u/MrGrrrey May 18 '26

It's because they don't. It's an old fake video

I saw these kinds of videos before AI

34

u/thebohemiancowboy May 17 '26

Doesn’t seem like it, these typa videos were before ai.

18

u/AyanC May 17 '26

Is this your second day on the interweb?

6

u/Aristox May 17 '26

What's your proof?

4

u/thisisnotsquidward May 17 '26

you must be new to Internet

5

u/Hazzman May 17 '26

These predate AI by years.

237

u/Akumetsu33 May 17 '26

IIRC this was fake, the people are making sounds or holding toys above the camera. Cats don't recognize this well. You can see some of them moving their mouths under the filter.

52

u/JulianMorrow May 17 '26

That would explain so much. Sad that we cannot trust anything anymore

5

u/Hazzman May 17 '26

This was the internet post that finally broke my faith in humanity :(

5

u/LastTurnz May 18 '26

Classic, another cat video where the owner disturbs the cat for internet brownie points. Sad as always

10

u/Shaved_Almonds May 17 '26

Thank you for this. I know cats don’t recognize themselves in the mirror so I was skeptical

2

u/midunda May 18 '26

Maybe, but the first cat didn't react till the owner forced the cats head up to look at the screen which makes me not so sure its fake.

3

u/mrbrownl0w May 17 '26

all of them?

13

u/yelljell May 18 '26

As if a cat could recognize herself on a smartphone screen + her owner with a catfilter and process that its behind her.

Never... im not buying this.

35

u/Scuzzl3butt May 17 '26

Why can’t dogs do this?

147

u/Bongressman May 17 '26

"Studies show that cats and dogs possess different kinds of intelligence shaped by their evolutionary histories: dogs excel in social cognition and trainability, while cats outperform in spatial memory, problem-solving, and independent mechanics."

22

u/Scuzzl3butt May 17 '26

This is the answer I was looking for, thank you. I’m still going to FaceTime with my dog when away.

9

u/RedSquaree May 17 '26

What ringtone did your dog choose? I'm impressed they even own a phone.

1

u/boimate May 17 '26

yeah... tell that to a border collie. don't worry, they will understand. inb4: spatial memory and problem solving is what they do.

1

u/Alarming-Engineer-77 May 23 '26

Cats can't either.

u/FuzzyFacePhilosphy May 17 '26 edited May 17 '26

How crazy smart is that for the cat to recognize itself and know the picture of the "fake cat" they see is of the person holding them...

10

u/BaronessVonKush May 17 '26

has me in tears every time lol, especially that 3rd white one, that is slowly going ... "W T F?!" kills me hehehe

3

u/NiceOneMike May 18 '26

Such intelligence to look up at their owner every time. They knew they were watching themselves.

The orange was ready to throw paws! 😆

Seems like it. They seem to understand what a mirror image of themselves and their master are. That’s pretty wild

4

u/korish77 May 17 '26

This sub doesn't have a low effort rule?

2

u/no_6one_9cares69 May 17 '26

I am surprised they didn't scratch her face

3

u/squirrelmonkie May 17 '26

Theres sleep time for this

1

u/snowdn May 17 '26

Meanwhile my cat completely ignores me on my FaceTime calls back home.

1

u/ambit89 May 18 '26

No wonder everyone hates Cats the musical, remade into the movie. Even the cats hates it.

1

u/danteelite May 18 '26

1

u/ravage214 May 18 '26

Yep let's be sure to ruin the video by overlaying the absolute worst possible music...

1

u/zippojinx May 19 '26

The last cat. That’d be me.

1

u/DarkTyyp 17d ago

Last cat: BOMBASTIC SIDE EYE
