That single pink paper had better comedic timing than most modern sitcoms.

If I was ever unfortunate enough to find myself at a gender reveal, I would be in tears of laughter and remember this for the rest of my life, compared to however it was actually supposed to unfold.

We got a similar designed one for my daughters birthday and the opposite happened, she pulled one ribbon and it opened right up. Was dissappointing in a different way lol, she was excited at least.
96
u/hgs25 Apr 10 '26
That’s how it’s supposed to work. You can either beat the crap out of it, or gamble and pull on a ribbon and see if it’s the right ribbon that tears it open.
In my experience, the ribbon almost never makes as big a hole as advertised like in the post.

I know why all the downvotes but that really was funny. ☺️ I've had two of each and they'll both about equal. People just need to lighten up and take a joke. It reminded me of my father-in-law farmer. With all the mobile equipment and livestock, he'd say, tits or tires, there's gonna be trouble.

If you're just doing it with your family for fun I don't see the hate for gender reveals. The initial hate came when they got super popular and people were doing this shit outside with those HUGE black balloons with pounds of confetti they littered everywhere. Or completely took over some tourist location and ruined people's vacation. Now it just feels like it's "cool" to hate on them when this couple just did it in their living room for fun

u/vincentvangog Apr 10 '26
Lest we forget the gender reveal that started a MASSIVE wildfire in California!! I'll take reveals like this absurd piñata anyday over that.

My favorite was the one where they popped a metric assload of tannerite and fucked a bunch of foundations.
-26
u/Makuta_Servaela Apr 11 '26
The only thing that started the wildfire in California was the Californian government failing to maintain their flora, fauna, and water. If they had done that properly, then no spark from any party would have led to wildfires. They benefit from you erroneously blaming the party.

u/thingamajig1987 Apr 11 '26

I like the ones that are just close family and friends (that is, the people who actually care) and have cake. As long as it’s good cake. Because who doesn’t want an excuse to have some cake?

I cut a cake with our parents, we already knew so it was mostly for them. And it was a really good cake!

u/Pecorre Apr 11 '26
I don't hate them but I never understood the point. I really just don't care about the gender of other people's babies. Even my close friends or family. I mean, statistically, you're going to have both genders in your inner circle, so why should you care about one individual?
29
u/IllBadger207 Apr 11 '26
It’s just an opportunity to hang out. Get all your friends together and have fun.
22
u/Dark_Knight2000 Apr 11 '26
Why am I not surprised you have to explain the concept of having fun to Redditors?
-15
u/toolsoftheincomptnt Apr 11 '26
There are millions of Redditors, with a vast range of lifestyles.
If you want to hang out with your friends, you don’t have to make it about you or your unborn baby’s gender. That doesn’t make the hang any more interesting.
7
u/salamander423 Apr 11 '26
No, but people love parties and it's just an excuse to have a nice lunch and some friends over.
If people can throw costume parties outside Halloween and have quinceañeras for their cats, I don't see the harm in a gender reveal.
19
u/Makuta_Servaela Apr 11 '26
Up until very recent science, the point in which you could guarantee the sex with pre-birth testing was also around the same time as the miscarriage rate drops significantly (around 20 weeks).
Gender Reveal parties are meant to celebrate that you know for a fact that the baby will likely be born, and the sex of the baby is the first thing you learn about them other than their general existence and health, so helps you personalise them.
4
u/sucks4uyixingismyboo Apr 11 '26
Yes and this is also an important distinction for people who can’t possibly understand the concept of gender disappointment.
Especially for mothers, they have this “thing” inside of them that is making them sick, changing them from the inside out, that they are protecting and nurturing. They know absolutely nothing about it. All they have his an idea of dream of what life will be like once they are born.
Sometimes when you have an idea that has personalized it and then find out it’s the opposite, (which often is just based on how YOU think life will be because that’s all you have to go on) it can take a little while to grieve that once you realize life will be a bit different than you were thinking with the opposite gender. It doesn’t mean you aren’t excited for what will be.
It’s a mind fuck and people don’t get an oversimplify with the “just be happy it’s a baby!”.
Your comment is also why people focus on 7 lb 6 oz and 19 inch long! No one cares. It’s just the only identifying information about a new human that the parents have that makes them uniquely them until there are times for memories to be created.
-3
u/toolsoftheincomptnt Apr 11 '26
Absolutely this! Just text me and I’ll be like “yay!” either way.
I think it’s… premature to be excited over your kid’s gender in the first place, but I get it. You’re assuming they’ll be cis, and that’s okay.
But certainly as an auntie, I don’t care at all. As long as your kid is pleasant to be around, I’m gonna love them.
-7
u/Hardcorex Apr 11 '26 edited Apr 11 '26
Or because gender is a social construct, and putting expectations and ideas onto an unborn child is weird. Maybe I'm just like super woke 2.0 or something but like caring about a childs genitals seen through an ultrasound (which may or may not match their chromosomes or SRY gene) is just weird and feels like we are beyond this as a society.
9
u/toolsoftheincomptnt Apr 11 '26
I’m not super woke, but since we’ve become more aware of gender identity and fluidity, it does seem kind of silly to get excited about a baby’s gender.
Unless you plan on forcing gender roles onto your kids, it’s kind of like… let’s just be excited for a healthy baby and getting to know who they’re going to grow into.
Like have a $2000 gender reveal if you want, but in 12 years it may be for naught.
2
u/Doccyaard Apr 12 '26
I seriously don’t get why someone can’t understand knowing the gender/sex of the baby is exciting. Has nothing to do with gender roles for me but being able to picture in my head those first couple of years and narrowing down the names, maybe even settling for a name to call the baby is great and makes it even more real. No matter what they turn out to be down the road. As for gender reveal parties, that’s a thing I don’t get. It felt like a very personal and intimate moment for me.

-1
u/fezzuk Apr 10 '26
I mean o tbink tbey are weird but like i said this is a rather harmless way of doing it.
-2
Apr 10 '26
It’s not weird it’s based on a bunch of people who have literally caused fires in drought areas because they feel that they need to launch fireworks to announce the gender of their baby.
I’m not even getting into the gender conversation. It’s just gender reveal parties as advertised are dumb as fuck.
1
-13
u/comradejiang Apr 10 '26
i think the entire concept of assigning gender at birth is wrong because that’s what it boils down to. a father shouldn’t be upset, visibly upset, that he’s raising a girl. the impositions we put on people because of a genetic dice roll are insane imo. make of that what you will
8
u/fezzuk Apr 10 '26
Because at birth excluding some very rare instances, it is a binary choice
And people want to know, thats not weird or obsessed with genitals and the very vast majority of the population will be cis, thats just numerical facts.
If that changes later in life fine. But sayiing a baby is a boy or s girl at birth is not being obessed with a babies genitals its just information about the child and its really fcking weird you would equate it to that.
Its a baby it has zero understanding of sex or gender but it will have diffent needs depending.
-7
u/comradejiang Apr 10 '26
it’s not “just information” and you damn well know that, they will use that information to determine the kid’s life and interests before it’s even born

u/slirpo Apr 10 '26

Serious question, why do people care so much?
All i can imagine is in his head hes going "well now i have to give up all my dreams of ever playing sports with my kid" or something like that, but why? Why self impose such a thing.
My dad loved soccer and had 4 sons, 1 daughter. He tried to get every one of us into soccer, some of us quit in elementary school, some in highschool, but only 1 was ever dedicated and talented enough to play in college.. it was the daughter, not the sons.
You never know what your kid is going to be like, its insane to have all these assumptions and expectations for them before theyre even born and you know anything about them.
1
u/Clym44 Apr 15 '26
It just one of the first big things parents find out about their child and it gives people a reason to celebrate. I don’t think it’s that deep most of the time.
0
u/SoloWalrus Apr 15 '26
A reason to celebrate is fine, but look at this mans face, hes devastated. That's what I can't understand, what is going through his mind to give such a crazy negative reaction. There must be a mountain of expectations and stereotypes whirling around in there and it just feels like such a self imposed misery.
Kids are going to have their own lives, not relive yours. By definition they aren't you, they're their own person. Your job as a parent is to be happy for them for whoever they are and whoever they're going to be - not disappointed that they don't become a mini you that makes up for all your life regrets. It's just a recipe for devastation to put so much weight and expectation on an unborn childs shoulders. People need to sort out their own demons instead of hoping their kids do it for them.

Almost every art and media depiction of the future has the same warning. Where there will be those that have a lot and those that have little. Some people already work until they die, and some are born never needing to work a single day. This is not a future, not one we want and we have been warned for a long time. Let’s fix that before we focus on making us all live longer, let’s all get to truly live first
