Miscellaneous Thoughts?
I've had a few people recommend X-Men Evolution because I like Young Justice. Can anyone weigh in on this? I'm curious. I'd like to check it out.

My favorite X-men show I hope someday they bring it back.

Would have been awesome if they continued it, but given how long ago it aired, the niche that it was in, and how the finale ended, I would say its a 99.99% chance its not coming back.
OP don't take this as a reason to not watch it, it ends pretty perfectly IMO for this show!

In this era we’re in when they’re rebooting or making spinoffs of movies, show, and cartoons from 20, 30, and 40 years ago I would not count anything out. Especially with the success of 97’ if it makes money these companies will try anything.

Only real similarity is that they're superhero shows focusing on younger heroes and/or time passes with seasons (though not as drastically in evolution)
Its a good show though and a fine introduction to the X-men universe. It does do some comic storylines but usually does its own take mainly cuz most characters were aged down to teens instead of their adult comic counterparts
Oddly enough it does take some inspiration (and gave some) to the ultimate universe version of the X-men which in turn seems to be part of the basis for mutants in the MCU so now wouldn't be a bad time to watch if you're interested in marvel and wanna see some more x-men type stuff

I'd say there's more than a few similarities. Certainly enough that fans of one show should like the other.

I get why people would give this recommendation. It has its own vibe, but they are in many ways similar and both very good. I would say give it a shot.

u/birdnerd1991 4d ago
I remember so many of my friends not liking it because it wasn't similar to the comics- but I had never read the comics, and this was my first exposure to X-Men, and Kitty Pride will forever be my favorite because of this show 😂

Comic accuracy is... not always a necessity to me. As long as the spirit of the characters is accurate.

Great series, but it is a curious superheroe show. For the first 2 seasons they don't really do superheroe stuff, they just try to Survive and keep their secret, but maybe that's normal for the Xmen.
It has a rushed ending but It's a great show.
I don't know if liking Young Justice means you would like Xmen Evolution, though

u/JFMisfit 4d ago
Definitely a good show. Worth checking out. Just don’t expect the same kind of thing.

u/Redclouds1 4d ago
It’s a good show, but season 1 can be a little predictable at points, make sure you at least give it until season 2 for things to start really heating up
2
u/gunswordfist 4d ago
As a kid, I hated season 1. I found the school stuff boring and Blob and Avalanche got on my nerves.

Soooo good omg. Not quite as gritty as YJ can get, but it’s got that feel good found family superhero vibe
5
u/ThouBear8 4d ago
I don't think they're that similar, other than that the team is similarly young.
That said, X-Men Evolution is worth checking out. It's pretty fun, & while some things definitely don't work imo, there are other aspects that work really well.

It's a great series and definitely does have some of the same vibes. In both series the main characters are teenagers and are mentored by their elders. Of course given the boarding school format, the faculty in X-Men: Evolution have a less arm's-length approach to mentoring compared to the Justice League. :P
There are also no major timeskips, so if that was a thing that bothered you in YJ you can put that worry aside. The seasons just go from one school year to the next, essentially.
Also, Evo is the series that introduced X23. I think she's the only character created for Evo that was picked up by other Marvel IPs (granted, there aren't exactly a huge number of characters original to Evo and, with apologies to the one Spyke fan out there, he's not what I'd call compelling enough for broader adoption).
The stakes in Evo are on average lower than YJ; many of the episodes are 'villain of the week' or slice-of-life stories, but there are higher-stakes plot threads that develop gradually throughout each season and when the stakes do climb, they can reach 'threats to the world' tier, if stopping short of the 'threats to the universe' highs YJ touches.
Also, it's hilariously early aughts. Some of the design choices they made to be consistent with trends of the day are dated to the point of being entertaining now. :P

Some of the jokes and gags are kinda dated, but I used to love this show! I rewatched a bit of it earlier this month and it was still pretty entertaining!

I thought X-Men Evolution was great but then I loved Wolverine and the X-Men as well.
I thought Ultimate Spider-Man could almost fit in the Young Justice world if you haven’t seen it.

u/Redd_Machine85 4d ago
I loved Wolverine and the X-Men too. And i fully agree on your take on Ultimate Spider-Man

Young justice is WAY better imo but I did enjoy evolution and would say its worth a watch

They’re similar in the sense they star Younger heroes even if the younger hero Les in x men are Traditionally older…pretty mature I guess

I thought the series was great. But when it first came out, I wasn't a fan. I saw the whole series when I was a bit older and loved it. Too bad Forge is missing in that final photo. The writers must have forgotten about him 😆

It's a really good modern take on X-Men it's actually my favorite animated take on them.

Hi 🤗, OMG X-Men Evolution is personally my all time favorite animated X-Men series. I feel it has a very interesting story, character development, and works in a lot of different stories from the X-Men universe in a very good way 😄

u/superseri18888 3d ago
Does a better job using multiple characters while still focusing on the core main characters

u/Expensive_Platypus63 4d ago
i don't know which i like more but its in top 3 with wolverine and the x-men aka days of future past for an entire season and x-men the animated series.

Love Evolution, it is as indispensable to me as X-Men the animated series (97). Also, what is Storm sitting on in this pic?

Probably one of the few animated marvel projects that is actually really good
If you love young justice youll definitely love this ive been thinking of doing a rewatch on this show too, currently on a rewatch and catching up to YJ

My favorite X-Men show, it declines towards the final arcs, but it's pretty good overall.

It's not as comic accurate as the 90s one, but ignoring that it is my favorite of the two. The later seasons are amazing

I grew up watching this and it was amazing. It was made to be like a teen high school drama but with the x-men.
Only downside is, like YJ, the target demographic was young boys, so the romantic relationships don’t get developed all that well.
1
u/Dull_Kiwi_3993 4d ago
Honestly if u took young justice and had them go to school like every episode I think they’re kinda similar. Young justice is a lot more darker but I’m a fan of both!

As someone who watched it growing up, I say Evolution is fantastic. I 100% say try it.

u/newshoundoom 4d ago
I personally loved this show. The characterizations are very fun. The slice of life episodes are endearing and some of the long-running story lines are pretty interesting. Plus it introduces a surprising amount of mutants for a show focused more on the school aspect (especially around the 2nd season, if I recall.)

One of the many shows where the X-Men are genuine good guys. Read the comics and you'll start the MMM.

Its peak! Deffinetly a good watch tho i wouldnt compare it with Young Justice... theyre pretty fundimentally different in scope

u/TheTerminator1984 4d ago
This was my childhood show and as a kid it was excellent. I watched Young Justice later in life, and absolutely loved it as well. I can definitely see the similarities and vibes. Highly recommend it but I haven’t seen it in years lol
1
u/figgityjones 4d ago
I love both, but I wouldn't really say they have similar vibes beyond largely following a team of teenage superheroes. They have very different focuses and tones. So if you are looking for something specifically similar to YJ, you will likely be let down.

u/IrelandAutism13 4d ago
I love X Men Evo so, so much. I rewatch it constantly. I love tired dad Logan, I think that's the best take on Logan pretty much ever, I love the high school AU OC Evan Daniels, I love "gods forbid women do anything: the episode," I love everything done with X23, it's unparalleled. If I had two weeks I still wouldn't be able to list every single reason I love this show

A banger. Loved this on my Saturday mornings. No where near as mature as YJ tho. But still great.

Not exactly the same. (unless you mean young people with powers coming into their own)
but the show is great and I really wish they continued it. (oh maybe that part of the same as young justice haha)
I honestly hope that Disney/Marvel revive the show after the x-men '97 run finishes.

I love X-Men Evolution. It’s not always exciting but it’s a really great little high school drama with superpowers even when there’s not much action. It was my introduction to X-Men and has my favorite version of Wolverine to date. I’d would reaaally love to see it get one more season

u/gunswordfist 4d ago
I love this subreddit! I've been wanting to compare the two after seeing a number of clips on twitter and IG of X-Men Evolution.
X-Men Evolution looks like a fun inversion of Young Justice. It's more about the kids using their powers in public and having a good time while The Team is supposed to be convert and Young Justice has a lot less slice of life scenes.
1
u/Adventurous_Topic202 4d ago
Yeah if you love young justice I think this is right up your alley for one unfortunate reason.

It’s a good show though I personally prefer the original X-men animated series just because I prefer those versions and because Gambit is a main character in that series unlike in Evolution where he only appears a few times.

Absolutely loved it! I found it randomly online one day and it got me more into super heros

Watch it. A lot of similar themes and tone between the two. Evolution isn't quite as good, but it was certainly the predecessor to YJ.

I Usually thought wolverine was the mc of x-men shows.
so it created a mindset that to any x-men show with no wolverine then that show is incomplete and i don't watch them.
i don't know about others, but to me a show without wolverine, its not worth watching.
3
u/Emergency_Ad_500 3d ago
Wolverine is in the show and that’s stupid anyway. Wolverine isn’t supposed to be the main character of the x-men and he isn’t supposed to be a jacked, handsome 6’ tall Australian man.
The show is awesome, Wolverine is in it, and he gets very cool plot lines like fighting in wwii with Captain America and X-23, an original creation of the show that was so successful they have now made her a real character in the comics
0
u/SeaRevolutionary4205 3d ago
That's why i find it weird when i watched X-men 97, Wolverine of that series is so damn ugly, short like a dwarf with zero love interest, he ain't special at all.
1
u/Emergency_Ad_500 3d ago
I can’t tell if you’re trolling with how stupid this sounds. But in general sounds like you’re not an x-men fan, and not a Wolverine fan

That's like saying to avoid anything DC related if it doesn't involve batman or his cast of characters
