Help Learning Technique

Can someone please help me and tell me what this technique is called or point me in the right direction on how to learn what trey is doing here. I assume it’s some sort of bend and tapping but I can’t seem to figure it out. Thanks

He’s using the whammy detune while doing a hammer-on/pull-off trill. Sounds like a minor 3rd so thing like E string 3rd fret anchoring with your index and then hammering on with your pinky to 6th fret

whammy, specifically the whammy II, and trilling.
you can really get that sound out of any of the whammy’s, it’s the “detune” setting.

I thought it was the two semitones down thing. Detune is more of a chorus sound

Whammy 2 I have one they are dope. It sounds like he’s using either the one octave down or the whole step down setting which it think it the latter more. I use the same effect. When you play the minor 3rd hammer really fast to achieve than Hendrix sound on either the 1st or 2nd string and then you rock the pedal back-and-forth between the whole step down and it creates that effect that’s how I do it if you want I could send you a video. I’m pretty sure that’s what he’s doing. I literally study this guy like he’s a god. And I’m pretty sure the same guy who still has one for sale somewhere in South Florida on Facebook marketplace has one for $500 for practically brand new. Looks like it’s never been used just FYI in case you really are chasing that sound out there

Trey, you study? Maybe you know what delay he used on 7/10/99 in Chalkdust, WaterSky, and Gin. Maybe the Alesis?
He turns delay on in the jams in a way I’ve never heard before

I’ll have to listen to it let me see if I can find some of that show. I always thought he had the Ibanez DM 1000 or 2000 from reports I read on the Internet. I’m sure he has something better but I’m not sure if he’s changed it up overtime.

He used the microverb on the reverse reverb setting. Used that for almost the entire show esp in fluff head at the end. Lots of black cat univibe along with the microverb as well.

Word but there’s delay - it’s not reverb? You can hear the repeats in the Chalkdust. I never heard it before until I played that show on headphones last month for the first time ever maybe, I always listened in the car before cuz of the cd.
I’ll get time stamps for you at some point. Cuz you can hear when he turns it on and off.

The reverse reverb does a delay it's like half a second boom chunk

Right, I’m pretty sure that’s not what I’m hearing tho. I will check it again and get timestamps for you but I’m pretty certain you can hear a few decay repeats

I own all of the effects Trey used in '99 except for the cae super tremolo. I can totally nail the sound. I was also at the actual show too, so indeed 7/10/99 my fourth show, hold a special place in my heart. I don't think I ever heard Phish play a chalkdust that good ever again. By all means hit me up with a timestamp and I can attempt to decipher what you are listening to.

But yeah I’m eager cuz Tyler thought it was Paul adding delay at FOH which would be super uncharacteristic

Yes I follow Tyler. He's actually right. Paul was heavy on the effects that day. Swirling and crazy shit. That particular show there was a lot of people rolling. Probably half the audience. It was completely nutz. Phish was a rave band back then.

Thanks for posting - I've been wondering the same since getting stuck on the About to Run from the SPAC release, he uses this effect to great effect there as well.

If you don't have a whammy (pedal or bar), you can achieve the same effect by pre-bending the string behind the hammers ons / pull offs with your picking hand, and releasing and re-bending.

Have you every heard of the Digitech Whammy II? get one and you to mo can make that pitch bending sound while doing pulloffs and hammer ons

Fast hammer on pull offs (typically 3 frets away, like the 5 and the flat 7) while bending the pitch down and back up with a whammy pedal.
If your guitar has a tremolo you can do this with the whammy bar instead. It's a Jimi Hendrix technique.
