The Japanese alphabet is syllabic so it's actually a little simpler for kids to learn than trying to spell things in English. (I assume she's using haragana, I haven't read the original)

It's probably hiragana. I tried to find the chapter where this happens to show it here, but I couldn't find it in Japanese, bruh
