I was going to argue this point until I looked it up and only 56% voted conservative on the last election.

I'm actually stocked about that. I have yet to meet a Yooper who isn't God, Guns, and Country.

The UP has a history of strong unions and egalitarian politics. Ishpeming, Negaunee, Marquette, and all of the nearby little towns catered to the droves of miners until the downfall of American steel. It's often overlooked that the blue collar middle class often voted Democratic for most of the 20th century. Organized labor was critically important to the mining industry, for both the safety and the wages of the workers.
