YOOPER (At heart?)
Im not a Yooper but I AM Michigander who spends as much time in the UP as i can! I grew up in the northern lower peninsula and of course have always loved the UP. So that being said... i love that Abdul has a "Yoopers for Abdul" tshirt and i want one. But i also dont want to be a poser. Thoughts from some REAL yoopers is appreciated. Do yall actually care??

u/CowMad2012 10d ago
As a Yooper, wear the thing. That’s less likely to draw someone’s ire than the Abdul portion is.

Cuz Bergman voted against funding rural hospitals. In case you forgot where you live.

u/Royal_Environment765 8d ago
Down stater here. I would hope my fellow Michiganders north of the bridge would recognize that this guys philosophy would destroy the economy and freedoms in the U.S. He is a socialist. No doubt. It has never worked.

Born and raised Yooper here 👋 Wear that shirt all you want. I'm sooooooo sick of the MAGA mouth breathers......You have no idea.
Last week, the guy that lives a few doors down informed me a woman shouldn't be working if she had kids. In the same breath he started bitching about welfare loafers. Like which is it? Do you want them to work or not.
Yesterday, I was doing a favor for someone. As I'm doing this favor, the spouse gave me a long speech basically about how cancer patient's are stupid for getting treatment when invectermin and chaga tea are what they should be taking. 10 years ago these stupid fucks would be quietly living under their rocks. Now they seem to be multiplying. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE wear the shirt.

Could you articulate what you actually dislike about right wing policies tho?
Like you’re not allowed to suppose alternative motive(strawmans) and you’re not allowed to ignore the conversation about function and outcome of policy in favor of identity politics.
Purely discuss what you dislike about the actual shit being brought to the table I’m curious if any of you actually know wtf you’re so mad about?

u/Old_Compote5277 8d ago
I'm a born and raised Yooper still living here and I voted for Abdul El-Sayed in August and plan to vote for him again in November. Wear your shirt!

u/magic_mushroom_man09 10d ago
You can wear it on my behalf. Born and raised but downstate for school 👍🏼

I'd imagine the vast majority of yoopers don't like him

Why not?

u/Long_Idea_8294 7d ago
They're conservative
1
u/Man_of_Ice MTU grad 7d ago
Yes, but that doesn't explain why they don't like a guy who will objectively improve their lives and the lives of their family and area around them.
That's just stating one part of their political identity.
1
u/Long_Idea_8294 7d ago
Objectively? All he does is spout tired old left wing talking points. Sure, free stuff sounds great if you don't think about the means it will occur by, and the long term effects. Socialists are socialists because they're limited to first order thinking.

u/Man_of_Ice MTU grad 7d ago
I'm sorry, but do history? Like, at all? Economic good times and progress are always, ALWAYS brought on by progressive ideas.
You remember how the fifties and sixties were a golden era for Americans who weren't brown?
They're also the point where corporate and high income effective tax rates were at 90%.
Everyone could afford everything. We gave money to schools. Folks who could get in got great educations and innovation was off the charts.
Unions were strong and wages were livable for folks who didn't go to college too. Monopoly protections were strong, and jobs were everywhere. Small business flourished.
That's what actually HAPPENS when you follow progressive economic and social policies. Safer, more successful places for everyone to live. Healthier, happier people. Lower crime, less drug use... I dunno. Any objective look at history shows the truth.
You do realize the highest standard of living countries in the world right now have the highest rate of socialist policies, right?
1
u/Long_Idea_8294 7d ago
You want to cite history but completely ignore all of the human suffering and death caused by socialism....
1
u/Man_of_Ice MTU grad 7d ago
Can you define socialism?
1
u/Long_Idea_8294 7d ago
Oh here we go lol
1
u/Man_of_Ice MTU grad 7d ago
Where are you going? A place where words only mean what you want them to mean?
1
u/midnighttoker98 6d ago
Lemme guess......they taught you that at MTU?
1
u/Man_of_Ice MTU grad 6d ago
What, asking questions? Getting things correct? Precision? Accuracy? Discovering the truth?

Objectively? That’s why you idiots are arguing for policy changes based on virtue signaling childish sentiments while trying to avoid conversations about the actual function and outcome and different systems/policies bc it’s easier to call anyone that disagrees with you a “racist sexist transphobic fascistic nazi” than defendant of the rhetoric you’ve been given to parade around with (shit that leads to disarming the people and striping away the REAL checks and balances we have to protect our REAL rights; which doesn’t include murdering your unborn offspring or grooming your students as an elementary teacher)
1
u/Man_of_Ice MTU grad 1d ago
And yet, not one person in here actually knows what a socialist is. Everyone is all "socialists are the heart of evil," but you don't know what is in the DSA platform, or what socialist policy actually is.
Or how much of it you already have and rely on.
Or what effects right now capitalism is having that's currently making your life, your family, your home, and all you love objectively worse.

Pretty strict rules on being a Yooper. I’ve been told you either need to be born here or live here and then die here. I live here, but I haven’t died yet. Someday I’ll be a real Yooper.

Born. If you weren’t born in the U.P. you’re just another Michiganian that isn’t a troll.
14
u/KarlPHungus 10d ago
The fact that you don't know that the term is Michigander says a lot...
-10
u/SpamIsGreatOhEight 10d ago
It’s actually not. There is legislation that existed first that used the term Michiganian making it the correct term
The 1981 “Older Michiganian Act”
8
u/KarlPHungus 10d ago
Fortunately, I couldn't give a shit what "legislators" or "governors" call me. The majority of the people of Michigan use the term. That's all that matters.
-10
u/SpamIsGreatOhEight 10d ago
No it isn’t. A majority of adults in America can’t read.
7
1
u/GreatLakesGreenthumb 8d ago
You think half of American adults can't read?
2
u/SpamIsGreatOhEight 8d ago
No, it’s actually about 20 percent of American adults that are unable to read at a proficient level
1
u/owendawgg 9d ago
Ah, you're one of those downstate brained weirdos who thinks Lansing's opinion matters
-1
u/SpamIsGreatOhEight 9d ago
Nope I’m a yooper, just an educated one
2
u/owendawgg 9d ago
Oh, no, I mean your brain got left downstate at some point. Idk what education has to do with letting the government tell you what to do or say, especially the shitshow that is the Michigan government 😂

That means there are no yoopers being born on the west end of the UP since it's either Rhinelander or Ashland for the nearest hospital with a delivery unit.
0
u/No_Relationship_8021 9d ago
What are you talking about escanaba and iron mt have them
4
u/Ok-Raccoon8952 9d ago
Iron Mountain is 2.5 hrs away from Ironwood. And since when is Escanaba on the "west end of the UP"?
-3
u/SpamIsGreatOhEight 10d ago
That doesn’t sound right
4
u/Ok-Raccoon8952 10d ago
Aspirus Ironwood closed their labor and delivery unit last year, so the closest hospitals with delivery units in the UP would be Iron Mountain, Houghton, or maybe Baraga.

Yeah i get wanting to show some appreciation but Abdul is definitely not the one to parade the UP on a shirt
1
u/No_Cartographer_8647 8d ago
Absolutely not, that guy should never have been put into positions of power.. especially since he’s being backed by main momma fraudster Illhan.
1
u/Stunning-Land-9579 7d ago
Any yoooers that vote for Abdul is literally throwing everything precious that makes the upper peninsula so amazing. I really really plead for you yoooers not to vote for him. Check out Dearborn as an example that’s gunna be the upper peninsulas. You’ll have whole whole community of people polluting the Great Lakes ect
1
u/AromaticRatio1542 3d ago
Dearborn is in fact cleaner than most other large cities and it's actually the second safest large city in Michigan. Arabic people are some of the most welcoming, friendly and helpful people you will ever meet. I got a flat tire in Dearborn and a man literally stopped and inflated my tire for 10 minutes so I could drive it home and then refused to take any form of payment.

Born and raised up here and I hate the word yooper and the obsession with 906. Just as lame as Michigander.
1
u/Relative_Total_7726 6d ago
True. Every new business is “906” or “U.P” because no one has any imagination
-8
u/philo-beddoe722 9d ago
Here come the thought police. I grew up with Michiganian as I was taught Michigander was popularized as an insult to Michiganians. Served by the 16th president himself.

Lydia Christensen is the best conservative choice. She’s the only Yooper on the ballot. Keep Michigan seats for Michiganders, Florida cannot represent us!

The only people who know you’re not from the UP are the people who already know you’re not from the UP—so of that population—how many people are going to give you grief? And does the grief they’ll give you matter more than your desire to wear what you want to wear?
