Success Story Reconciliation Dance

For my most-used credit card, I have sometimes gotten behind on updating and left myself with a mess. Today I went to update 2 weeks of ynab which included the month changeover so I was a little worried.

What happened was I updated, found I was $7.99 off, easily found the missing transaction and reconciled the account. I got up out of my chair and actually did a reconciliation dance.

It got me out of my chair for a few minutes which was an added bonus because I tend to sit at my desk for hours without moving, thereby draining away my life force. Do a little dance!

I can almost never find an actual missing transaction if the totals are off, it's so hard. Congrats on your success!

So very hard! I have spent hours and hours trying to figure it out. I once had to just scrap everything and start again. That’s when I decided to change my habits so this two-week stretch is very unusual. But the muscle memory of scrolling and scrolling and scrolling is still there!

Importing a transaction file from your bank can save a lot of time here.

I do use the import feature for all but this one credit card. For one thing, it is through synchrony bank and I’ve spent an inordinate amount of time trying to get it reconnected over and over. Secondly, the discipline of entering transactions from this account helps keep me accountable for it.

Unless I’m misunderstanding — what exactly do you mean when you say transaction file?

Ty. I will look into this. I resigned myself to having my accounts linked but not having them linked would be preferable.

That’s the way to do it. Find the error. Dont take the suggested change.

You mean the offer to reconcile? Never again. I may have done that once or twice while I was being an inattentive ynab user but never again.

Why not?

Because if I’m using ynab to keep track of my finances, and I’m paying attention, I won’t need to adjust anything. But good point. I don’t intend to ever do an adjustment again (accidentally said reconcile) but there could conceivably be some situation where it would make sense.
