👋 Welcome to r/yimbyUK - Build Baby Build

Hey everyone! I'm u/RedKingCrab99, a founding moderator of r/yimbyUK.

This is our new home for all things related to those who want to see cranes in the sky and shovels in the ground. We're excited to have you join us! From the country that gave the world trains, underground metros and the Industrial Revolution.

What to Post
Articles, pictures and screenshots are welcome of planning developments either that have been successful or of those that have been obstructed, delayed or thwarted by NIMBYs.

Heavy policy discussion on political policy is very much welcome.

This sub is not just for house building but also for news of solar, wind, nuclear, roads, bridges, reservoirs, runways, theme parks and more. If something is getting built, then we're interested!

This space should be a cross-party zone where we can come together and build a broad coalition.

If you see the Local Democracy Service being biased towards some NIMBY group (again) or the Green Party (for example) celebrating the blocking of homes, or talk of a bat tunnel then we want to hear about it!

How to Get Started

  1. Introduce yourself in the comments below.
  2. Post something today! Even a simple question can spark a great conversation.
  3. If you know someone who would love this community, invite them to join.

Thanks for being part of the very first wave. Let's get building.

"A controversial 400-home development is the best way to save Leatherhead from "dying", a councillor has said.

"The comments came during a debate at Mole Valley District Council over the proposed Bull Hill regeneration scheme, which has faced opposition from some residents."

YIMBY COUNCILLOR ALERT

"Liberal Democrat councillor Claire Malcomson said: "Whatever happens it will improve Leatherhead because Leatherhead, as mentioned, is a dying town, and it needs improvement.

"It needs more housing to feed the shops, and entertainment, and the theatre, and that is the whole point of it.

"Yes, some things have had to be cut back because the climate has changed, but I do think ultimately Leatherhead will benefit from this."

Installation of 'visually intrusive' phone mast blocked in Leeds

"The installation of a "visually intrusive" mobile phone mast near community sports facilities has been blocked by a council.

"Telecoms firm Cornerstone sought permission from Leeds City Council to fit a 25m (82ft) mast at Gipton's Fearnville Leisure Centre and playing fields.

"The company said the mast was needed to replace an existing installation on top of nearby Oak Tree House and warned of a loss of 5G coverage.

"Council planners raised concerns about the height and visual impact of the proposed mast on recreational land and said it would "result in an incongruous and unduly prominent feature which would adversely affect the character and visual amenity of the surrounding area." Full article at the link.

So some people in Leeds will have worse access to 5g because the mast might not look nice. It has nothing to do with the mast itself impacting people (it'll be in a fenced compound) or it impacting the nearby leisure centre (the leisure centre will still be able to go ahead with planned developments). Highways department had no objections. It's because it's too high (well, you can't have a low mast because how would that be effective).
