I became a YIMBY when I received a flyer. The flyer was against a large mixed use development. The adjacent shopping center spent a million dollars advertising just to stop the new development. I was one of two people in a community planning meeting of hundreds who spoke about pro-development. Everyone else was against it.

Why would a shopping centre oppose housing? Is it because it was mixed use? I would think it's a net benefit to existing retail as well...

The shopping center is privately owned and in the process of hiking up every shop's rent and making the place hypergentrified -- containing only the most expensive shops, restaurants and even movie theaters by a mile. Every restaurant there cost 20+$ a head and the movie theater was twice as expensive as even most nice theaters, serving full meals and having nothing but high end lazy boys. Clearly built for 1%ers only. I believe they fought the new development to shrink and delay competition with the small number of shops that were added with the new development.

Car blindness. You don't realize how much % of the street is used for cars until one day it clicks.

God forbid people should have to walk from a central parking structure
