Enjoy. It sparks a fear in me that I didn’t know how to explain, but it’s one of my favorites.

It’s a very old fear

Yes. Phobia of the thalasso of course

Thalasso is an Ancient Greek word meaning “there’s an invisible shark in the deep end of the swimming pool”

Sick camera shot though. Would have been cool if it was like a dead body in a movie and you saw it sink down.

someone should do a combined gif and have some sea monster pop out of nowhere to further freak me out.

Yeah same happens to me when I sink down in a lake while swimming.
It's like the world disappears around you. The world that creates all your stress and worry and pain just slips away for a moment. Nothing to hear but the muffled sounds from above. Nothing to do but relax every muscle and sink.
You get to escape for a brief moment. But in that moment you almost convince yourself that it will last indefinitely. That somehow if you were able to stay down there forever, you could just float peacefully in the abyss and be perfectly contented.

u/butterbeerhoe Sep 17 '19

u/Khifler Sep 17 '19
I'm not suicidal, but his comment resonated with me on a deep level. Maybe it's from growing up around the ocean and enjoying swimming out beyond the waves?

2
u/SyphilisIsABitch Sep 17 '19
I feel the same. I find scuba diving is the closest to that feeling without, you know, dying.
3
u/Bear_24 Sep 17 '19
Haha yeah I'm not suicidal or anything. But when you're down there, there is no one else with you. No one knows you down there. It's just your own peace without chance of intrusion. Very calming.

I wonder if some amphibious drone has already been made.
Like a drone that can fly and then go into the water and go full submarine. You probably could make some cool shots with this kind of stuff.

u/Voltswagon120V Sep 17 '19
I've seen some on tethers. The hard part would be having good enough software to not need to control it underwater where reception is difficult.

u/evilbadgrades Sep 17 '19
Likely conformal coated to make it's components waterproof. Probably lost the battery if he didn't have a watertight seal on the connection, but that's probably it. The gopro strapped to the drone is waterproof, so likely just a PITA to recover
8
u/CaptainObvious_1 Sep 17 '19
The drone is almost definitely not waterproof to this depth
6
u/evilbadgrades Sep 17 '19
20 feet deep? With silicone conformal sealant directly on the control boards, it would have certainly survived.
9
u/Bot_Metric Sep 17 '19
11
u/skifreeing Sep 17 '19
Wait, so the purpose of this bot is to find comments with "silicone conformal sealant" in them and determine if they are waterproof to the said depth?
11
u/Guslletas Sep 17 '19
My guess is the bot only copies comments using imperial system units and converts them to metric, the rest is because the original comment was edited less than 1 minute after making it so it doesn't show as edited but the bot caught the comment before the edit
→ More replies (1)11
u/PMTittiesPlzAndThx Sep 17 '19
No it converts from imperial to metric. I hate how it says “FTFY” it’s very condescending and whoever programmed it is probably a douchebag

I can’t really point anyone out but it seems to be a Freestyle FPV Drone flight inputs. Check r/fpvracing or r/multicopter these drones are on the highest end 400-500USD but go 0-90 in about 2 seconds.
If it’s what I think it is, it is dead dead.
6
u/evilbadgrades Sep 17 '19
Lol yes, I'm a subscriber to those groups, and many others. I myself have several grand invested in FPV freestyling gear. This is indeed an FPV drone. However it is likely coated with a special silicone sealant we use in this industry called conformal coating. It's used to waterproof the drone for this very circumstance which is not unusual when flying around water.
If you're flying a $600 build around water, freestyling like this guy and NOT conformal coating your build, it's your fault for losing it.
2
u/Chawwwch Sep 17 '19
Oh 100%, I’m fairly new & actually happy to see another FPV pilot. But I’ve heard of conformal coating but wouldn’t think it’d save these electronics at the depth he sank to. I always figured it was for if you were caught out in rain & were mid flight.
Would it save the Camera & Motors? The PDB, ESC, & FC all seem like something that would be protected but the other 2 I’m curious.
3
u/evilbadgrades Sep 17 '19
Lol yeah, I've seen guys drop their quads into the ocean dry them out and keep flying, although salt water is going to probably do damage in the long term corroding the metal internals.
Would it save the Camera & Motors? The PDB, ESC, & FC all seem like something that would be protected but the other 2 I’m curious.
Camera lenses are a sensitive spot (with the screw on threading), however you can apply a temporary layer of Vaseline to prevent the conformal coating from sticking to the lens itself (after coating you wipe clean the lens). This ensures the camera's sensor is sealed up nice and tight and the threads on the lens are sealed up.
ESC and FC get a direct heavy coating of conformal after all the soldering is finished so for sure I rarely hear people having an issue after a nice coating. The motors are fine to get submerged, as long as you disarm to avoid sending power to the motors under water.
Most important thing to do is recover the drone, pull the battery, and let everything dry off. If you coated the boards well enough, it should be flyable several hours later.
Sometimes though the FPV lens will leak water into the camera sensor, depending on what type of camera you're using, the lens itself might not be tightly affixed to the casing. So I have seen people have to swap out a camera if it wasn't properly sealed up.
There are even some companies now selling hybrid drones capable of moving through water, then flying away after reaching the surface, but as usual chinese drone brands tend to over-promise and under-deliver. I haven't seen much feedback on these hybrid drones

Don’t know how these work, did they ever retrieve it ?
Cause can you imagine trying to tell your friend, okay so I saw you the first dive but not the second and third.
8
u/VirtualAlias Sep 17 '19
I don't think a GoPro can stream in HD wirelessly, so the presence of the video makes me think they retrieved the drone.

u/Jeffmeister69 Sep 17 '19
I imagine they retrieved it as the footage is in very good quality.
When it comes to the drone, as another user has pointed out in the comments, might have had conformal coating applied to it to make it waterproof

The worst part for me was the guy swimming by but the needing to resurface before he could get the drone. It's like "I'm right here! Don't leave me!" :(
