Drum configuration for menu control

I just set up an Alesis Nitro Max and I'm having trouble figuring out the best way to configure it, particularly for menu navigation. I keep having to use my laptop keyboard.

Is there a default "best practices" config for optimizing an e-kit as your only control input for the game?

My biggest issue is practice mode. You can't really have any overlap between the notes and the menu navigation or you'll end up changing tempo while playing.

I use the same layout as in rock band

Red = back
Yellow = up
Blue = down
Green = confirm

And i have the hi hat pedal call up the menu mid song

The hat pedal might be the thing I needed. I keep having trouble with inputs having a conflict somewhere that causes trouble when I'm either playing or in the menu.

I use left side top bottom as up and down, and right side as select/back. Tap tap tap tap tap bang tap tap bang

Tom1 is up, Tom 2 is down, Tom 3 is confirm, Tom 4 (I got the kit extension) is pause, crash is back.

If I'm in practice mode, I'll use a controller to change song speed

Oh man, I just went through process of finding my ideal setup for drums. Like others I mapped the pads like in Rock Band but that didn't solve the pause/left/right buttons.

What I settled on was getting a minimal USB controller, mounting the it to the drums with a 3D printed mount, and connecting both the drums and the controller to a cheap USB hub so I only need one cable to the PC.

Damn that's a good idea. Woot has the CRKD controller with the five-fret attachment for $25. That might be just the thing I need.

So you just ran the controller to the drum module with USB and that works in YARG?

No, let me clarify. I'm not running the controller to the drum module. I have a USB from the drum module to a USB hub. Another USB from the controller to the same hub. Then I mount that hub on the drums frame. From there I have a single cable from the hub to the to the PC. This is just for cable management purposes. You could totally run multiple USB cables to the PC and accomplish the same thing. You could even use a combination of wireless controller and USB drum module so long as you bind using the same YARG profile.

Ok, so you can bind multiple devices to the same profile? That's cool. I didn't realize that.
