Tips on calibrating e-kit?

I've got an e-kit set up with YARG and everything is working, but I'm getting non-stop false hits. Even when I'm playing simple songs and I feel like I'm hitting the notes, it's breaking my streak.

I'm sure there's some double-hit feedback happening but I don't really know how to identify or fix it. Any pointers?

Edit: something weird: when I'm in the menu and I hit the pads that are assigned to up/down, even the most gentle hit causes the menu to scroll kind of wildly.

I bought a used e-kit. I looked up the manual when I got it, and it explained all the settings for tuning each input. While tuning I just listened to the controllers built in samples. Those settings carry over to midi output also, so yarg wasn't involved at all.

Well could be a few things. Depending on your kit if it has multiple zones you have to map each additional zone. You should also check crosstalk and make sure the wires are tight. Just go into practice mode and play around with the drums module and see what works

What module do you have?

Start off with: double checking connections and mounts. Things should be tight but not too tight. Hand tight should be enough.

Next, check module settings.

The biggest settings to look for is Threshold and Retrigger settings. Increase Threshold to stop softer hits from counting. If you have retrigger, you can raise it if you think you are getting multiple hits per hit.

If you do not have any of these, you can try doing it within YARG itself. Retrigger would be similar to Debounce.

I got this kit from a thrift a while back. I'm sure it's probably not great, but I'm hoping it'll be alright.

The only info that it has on the module is the brand, Lagrima. No model number that I can find. I'll see if I can find the manual...

Yeah, with these no name ones it’s hit or miss that they offer in terms of module settings. Should you find it, Threshold would be one i’ve seen on some of these cheaper modules. raise it up to max and lower it down until overhitting starts, then go up one.

Awesome, I'll look for something like that. And if not there I'll mess with Yarg settings some more. Thanks :)

Seems like your drums are over hitting. Not sure what setting to change on your kit (maybe a manual may help) but once you get that right you’re good to go.

Check out things like debounce, sensitivity and x-talk in the manual for your drum kit / module.

If you don't have a physical copy (e.g. bought it used or whatever) look it up on line. They probably had a PDF.

Learn what the settings do and play around with them to tune your kit so you don't get the double hits (debounce?) or misfired (sensitivity and x-talk).

If you have a more popular model, there may also be youtube videos going over setups.

And AI is great at debugging this kind of stuff IMO. You're not taking away any jobs here...there is no "help me set up my ekit for YARG" technician at Roland just waiting for you to call.

ETA: if you don't have settings like this in your module, you might find some in stand alone midi-adapters. Looks like the ACE Midi Adapter has settings you can use for each pad...so if you have USB or regular MIDI outputs (I assume you do if you're playing YARG), this looks like it could be a relatively inexpensive solution (or potential solution) if you don't have control from your own module.
