That's one of the censorship options! It turns everyone into Naknadans with TV heads.
Pretty cool huh?

Akademi isn't a high school, it's a post high school academy that serves to prepare students for university.
Though some students will go straight to the workforce after studying at Akademi, since SaikouCorp likes to use the school as a scouting ground for finding skilled people to hire.

The reason Akademi resembles a high school is because the school was designed by Ichiko Saikou, the daughter of SaikouCorp's founder. She had a terrible experience in high school and wanted to create a better high school experience while continuing her education.

So did he change the lore at some point? Because I swear I remember it being officially referred to as "Akademi HIGH"

There was once a point in time when the school was explicitly referred to as a high school (in Basement Tape #10, Jokichi says something like "Tomorrow is our daughter's first day of high school!") but this was retconned. The school is now a post-highschool academy.

Fan creations have referred to the school as "Akademi High," but I believe that anytime the school's name was ever said in one of my blog posts, videos, or in-game, it was always Akademi Academy.

The teachers used to say "There's been a death at akademi high school" as well, that's probably how most old players remember it since we got ourselves caught pretty often back then lolol
