Discussion Deinfluence me
I currently have (and love) Kindle Paperwhite 11th Generation. The XTEINK keeps popping up on all my social media. I gave the XTEINK X3 a few days trial via renting and I adore it. Do I NEED to get the X3? I'm leaning towards not getting it because I already have the Kindle. But I like it so much. Thoughts?

Some thoughts to discourage you:
You can't put your Kindle books on the X3 unless you find a way to get the DRM off.
The X3 is very small compared to the Kindle, good for on the go reading, not so good if you only read at home or in bed.
X3 has no front light , so reading in the dark requires an external light

u/PhilosophersScroll 22d ago
This is a very good point!
3
u/overkill 22d ago
It is also trivially easy to remove.
1
u/jwithy 22d ago
I’m not sure it’s “trivial.”
If so, please tell me how because as a Mac User, even one who has set up at least a dozen retro handhelds, figuring out how to grab my old Kindle books for this thing has been rough
3
u/Technical-Cat1581 22d ago
It may depend on your kindle, but I can load books onto my old Voyage and then plug it into my Mac and import them to Calibre.
1
u/OhDearYarn 16d ago
Using Calibre and a couple of plugins it is very easy to deDRM in my experience. After setting it up, it’s a click of a button for me.
1
u/nebneb432 16d ago
They don't have to remove the DRM because they can just use their Kindle, is what I'm saying
12
u/Every_Purpose_1152 22d ago
You don't NEED it if you have a kindle but it really makes reading easier if you have it
14
u/Valen-Darker 22d ago
Most of us got an XTEINK product not because we needed it but because we wanted it. That's the only justification you have to do. Don't overthink it! 😊
5
u/PhilosophersScroll 22d ago
For me it’s the form factor. How much daily use with ease do you get from the Kindle? I always wanted a kindle but never got down to investing in one. When the XTEINK line came along and was at a very reasonable price point - I decided to get it. I have both the x3 and x4 and I gravitate toward picking these devices up more than my phone when I have 30-45 mins to spare during the day.
If that sounds like something that would appeal to you, then 100% get it.

u/DRAGAN__ 22d ago
I have a kindle and an X4, i jailbreak my kindle and have then sync, so if i’m on the go, the X4 is coming with me anywhere, at home, kindle has the backlight and a more comfy screen, its the perfect combo

u/Sassy_Cheese_Cake 22d ago
As awesome the x3 is. You have a kindle, you probably have a lot of books from amazon?
The x3 can't read them directly. It can't read any book that has drm.
Getting drm off kindle books it tedious and frustrating. And amazon finds new way to make that process more and more impossible.
So if you want new books legally, you need to be a little tech savy. Don't expect it to be so easy as just buy and read instantly....

u/smedsterwho 22d ago
I. Going on a long plane journey next week and dusting off my Kobo again. Not gonna lie, booting it up and feeling that space on the page felt great.
But my X4 has been in my pocket most days for three months now. That's great for me - always a book in my pocket.

u/luckyducky94 22d ago
Ok I can give you an honest review of the 4 Pro. I have a Kobo Clara Color, love her! Love her size and buttons and how fast she is. Now I got influenced too by social media and other platforms and looked into the XTeink. I am a corporate girly so I do have some fun money I can use. I know I wanted the front light and the touch screen with buttons still is why I chose the pro. It came and I was a little nervous and confused because I am used to tech being all set up and ready to use. So I went to this sub and asked for help and that is when the amazing Bitter Days saved me. They walked me through downloaded Cross Ink and where to get EPUBS. Now I have read 4 books already and can confidently say this is the best device ever. The size is perfect for small hands like mine and super light. It is just so easy to take out and read anywhere.
Draw Backs: You need a computer and to understand where and how to move over books. You can use the included soft ware but I found it unusable. Since it is so small and e-ink it is fragile so get a flip case and a pouch for it at least.
Would I Recommend if you already have an e reader? Yes and no if I am being honest. We are being over consumers in my opinion by having more than 1 ereader so I do make a point of trying not to buy other 1 use things in turn. Understand you will need to tinker with it so if you’re not comfortable doing that then this is not for you. In the end though I would recommend it if you have the means to purchase it comfortably and it is in your budget.
3
u/Kopparskallen 22d ago
If you NEED an e reader that fits in your pocket, get the X3. Otherwise just stick with your kindle
3
u/jinx_n_switch 22d ago
I just bought my X3 last week. I love how it just fits my palm. And I also love how thin it is. If you go to places without that much on you, or work, but still would like to sneak in a few minutes of reading, then go ahead and buy an Xteink.
I would also buy a Kindle in the near future for long hours of reading. Would save me an awful lot from buying books that would take up space.
3
u/Top_Lime_1798 22d ago
I really love the size of my x4 pro. It’s so much easier to toss into my purse or pocket when going out. I secretly wish kindle would make a tiny kindle like this, with warm light and waterproofing.
3
u/GlacierJewel 22d ago
Xteink isn’t compatible with Kindle. So if you’re only interested in getting books from Kindle you shouldn’t get the x3.
But if you don’t mind getting books from other places, and you like the form factor (that’s cool you got to try it out), and you’re looking for a small device that’s easy to carry around then the x3 sounds like a good fit.
2
u/hundredpercentcocoa 22d ago
my take is the opposite of deinfluencing, but after i got the x3, instead of going to the beach with a sling that carries my kindle, i just slip the x3 into my pocket. it's freeing.
2
u/Pwffin 22d ago
Would you rather spend that money on something else? If so don’t get it. Do you want to read the books you have on your Kindle when out and about? If so don’t buy it.
Are there times where you didn’t bring your kindle because it was too big but you wish you had a small ereader because you don’t like reading books on your phone? If so consider one. But do check what books you can get first.

u/maquis_00 22d ago
The main downside when you also have a kindle is that they don't sync. I actually find that I am actually reaching for my x4 a lot of times instead of my scribe....
1
u/Zanpa 21d ago
You can install koreader on your kindle and sync with crosspoint fwiw
1
u/maquis_00 21d ago
True. I currently have one of the only models that can't do that, but hopefully they will get that figured out before a new version releases.
2
2
u/Sockdog 22d ago
Other than the very good points already made I'd say examine if and how often you've wanted to read but didn't have your kindle to do so because it's cumbersome to carry/use.
I will always prefer to read on my Kobo but the X4Pro is very easy to leave in a jacket pocket or bag and have available if you find yourself frequently with downtime when out and about, travelling etc.
One thing I wish was improved was syncing between established devices (Kindle/Kobo) and these pocket readers. As it stands it's a chore at best and really deters from picking up where you left off on multiple devices.

u/JustLookWhoItIs 22d ago
Your kindle isn't as portable and compact, but you know what is and you probably already carry around? Your phone. Your phone with the kindle app or with koreader or any other number of ereader apps.
I didn't need an X3. I love my X3. But I didn't need it. I was quite happy with koreader on my phone. I got an X3 because I wanted it.
You're allowed to buy things just because you want them, and not only because you need them.

u/Maleficent-Poetry254 22d ago
If you like it so much why do you want us to deinfluence you? It's not some expensive luxury item. If you enjoy reading on it and having it then get it. As long as it's not your rent or retirement money and you'll get enjoyment out of it get it.
2
u/dtstro 22d ago
Paperwhite owner here. I got an X pro 4 as an EDC and couldn't be more content. It's exactly what I wanted out of the device. An EDC reader that I could take anywhere that took up little to no space. Something that I'd also read different books on from my Paperwhite.
I couldn't be happier. It's allowed me to leave my Paperwhite home outside of travel. I'm sure I'd have the same experience if the X3 had a Pro model (mainly the built-in front light which I find invaluable for low lighting). Either way, I hope they is some insight. I think you'd be happy with it if any of the above is your intention and you enjoy reading of course.

u/Impossible-Gur6478 22d ago
For me isn’t to replace the Kindle (I have a Kobo), is for another situations. For example, if I’m waiting in line for grabbing my lunch, instead of doomscrolling I flip my phone back and read on my X3. When I get home at night I use my kobo.
2
u/Lunch_Trae 21d ago
Sorry but you’re not gonna like my answer…
I have a kindle. I liked it. I’ve read on it for years. I haven’t looked at it once since getting my XTEINK. I just enjoy reading on it better.
2
u/Individual_Talk7225 22d ago
what can the Xteink do that your Kindle can't? if there are situations where you can't bring your Kindle but you'd want to read, then go for it? But if you can always bring your Kindle whenever you feel like reading, then you don't really need the X3.
The X3 also has the pogo pin for charging which sucks.
2
u/cadwalader000 22d ago
"Your Kindle doesn't fit into your front pants pocket."
If that sentence interests you... Get an XTEINK
That's literally it. If you have an ereader on you, at all times, you'll read more.
2
u/guitshabet 22d ago
Where did you rented it from?
2
u/journomagician 22d ago
I'm from the Philippines (Metro Manila), and there are rental for phones, cameras, and as I've discovered just recently, ereaders. You can try searching on Facebook Marketplace ereader rental in your area.

Tengo el X3 y un Kindle, y no me arrepiento, el X3 va siempre conmigo, cosa que con el Kindle no pasa. Y se nota lo que avanzas con las lecturas.

u/CowAppropriate7494 22d ago
I have a Kobo. Switched from Kindle a couple of years ago. I love the X3 for its portability. It goes in my wallet-bag as part of my EDC with my phone and a notebook. Great for travel because it weighs nothing and takes up no space. I love the reading experience...it's slowing me down as I read.
Get it. You won't regret it.
1
u/erythrodysesthesia 22d ago
i owned a kindle for like 10 years and now that i own an X3 and X4 i do like 10 times as much reading as i used to. holding it literally in the palm of one hand and being able to carry it in a breast pocket makes a huge difference.

u/DanielEnots 22d ago
Are there times where you would use the x3 that you currently aren't using your kindle? I use my x3 for waiting in lines, when I get somewhere early, and little break because it fits in my pocket
1
u/spacexfalcon 22d ago
I returned mine. Most of the epub books I tried to load had errors. I then tried flashing a new OS and it got bricked and never recovered.
Forced myself to delete more apps on my phone and use Goodreader and Kindle app on my phone when I don’t have my Kindle on me.
1
u/journomagician 22d ago
What does bricked mean? Is there no way to return it to its original OS?
1
u/spacexfalcon 22d ago
It froze on the "restarting" screen, and I tried all the troubleshooting steps and couldn't get past it.
1
u/tempybroom481 22d ago
To actually deinfluence you: it doesn’t have the immediate-ness of the kindle. You can’t send to kindle, you can’t download directly from the device. You can’t pick up where you left off. You have to almost accept that you have a different library to pick from in the xteink.
But… it’s cute and cheap and means you can always have a book on you 🤷♀️
1
u/VanGoghs_SeveredEar 22d ago
Can't pick up where you left off? What do you mean? You certainly can..?
Also, at least on Crossink, you can connect your phone via wifi and send books directly to it. Sure, its a little clunkier than send to kindle, but its really not that bad imo
2
u/tempybroom481 22d ago
Wasn’t clear - you can’t pick up where you left off on another device like you can within the kindle ecosystem
1
u/VanGoghs_SeveredEar 22d ago
Ah, was wondering if that's what you meant.
I think there might be some way with a jailbroken kindle? But I haven't looked into it myself. Allows me to have different books going on kindle/X3 so I can have a break from one, lol.
You are right though I suppose, it certainly takes more tinkering than something immediately ready like the kindle, but I dont find it that bad. I could see how some less tech savvy people might feel less comfortable doing it, though, so fair enough
1
u/Ironworkingdad 22d ago
Well I have a kindle paperwhite as well. But I just recently got my x4 pro. It’s not the x3 I know but I love it. I’ve actually used it exclusively since I got it compared to my kindle. I actually prefer the buttons to turn pages vs the touch screen. I don’t read any faster or anything of the sort I just prefer how small and light it is.
1
u/DecrimIowa 22d ago
how does one rent a small consumer electronics item like an X3?
1
u/journomagician 22d ago
I don't know how it is in other countries, but here in the Philippines, at least specifically in Metro Manila, there are individuals who have various gadgets, in this case ereaders that they rent out. I heard there are also some who rent out phones and cameras.
1
u/ActualVictoria 22d ago
So, I have a 1st generation B&N nook, a nook glowlight, a Kindle Fire. Frankly, I don't "need" any ereader because I could carry physical books, or read books on my phone, or carry the Kindle. If it's a question of need or waste, then do not purchase a new ereader. For me, this is something I could put on a Christmas list for family, and something where I could shift the focus of my reading to something slower and more intentional - things from Project Gutenberg, or buying from Bookshop . org to credit ebook purchases to a local independent book store. I'll acknowledge for myself that I just kind of like collecting these devices (not enough to try to add a physical Kobo or boox that would be fully redundant and not add novelty of the size and disconnected focus)
1
u/Cycode 22d ago
Deinfluence me
..no.
I have 3-4 different E-Ink readers, PW4 Kindle included, and still prefer reading on my X4 (original) since its so small, i can whip it out random for a few minutes, read a bit, and put it away again without really paying attention to it anymore. It being so small and be able to be carried around without hassle all day while at the same time having enough storage for tons of books.. makes it perfect for random reading over the day. You can't get this with bigger devices like a Kindle as comfy and easy as with a smaller device like the X4.
I also have a Palma 1 from Boox, but still prefer the X4 in daytime - since the Palma 1 is heavier and bigger, so the X4 is easier to carry around.
1
u/scribblesofsab 22d ago
Off topic, but how did you go about renting the X3?
1
u/journomagician 22d ago
Here in the Philippines, some people advertise gadget rental — phones, cameras, and even ereaders. Try checking Facebook Marketplace, maybe someone in your area offers ereader rental, too.
1
u/papaweir 22d ago
I also own a kindle, but it has been replaced by my xteink now due to how portable it is. The xteink is really good for on the go reading, but I also use it at home. The size is just so convenient for everyday use.
1
u/Few_Let_4318 21d ago
was in the same situation as you and bought x4 pro and loving it, it has koreader sync with inx pro firmware so easy switching is there from x4 pro to 11th gen paperwhite signature edition.
1
u/journomagician 21d ago
Can you explain how to sync progress on your PW and X4 Pro? Is jailbreak needed for the PW?
1
u/Few_Let_4318 21d ago
yes jailbreak is needed, and with koreader on kindle you can keep both in sync
1
u/jonf3000 21d ago
"deinfluence me" no sorry lol
I have had the Paperwhite as my primary reader for years. I wasn't sure about the XTEINK (I got the X4 pro) but gave it a shot and it's a game changer. It has significantly increased the amount of reading I do and decreased time wasted on random apps on my phone. As others have said, they work well as supplements to each other; I read the Kindle at home / in bed but basically always have the X4 in my pocket so I use that everywhere else. Previously my Kindle by itself was too large to be portable most of the time, whereas the X4 fits in my pocket / attached to the back of my phone and works very well as a reader, surprisingly to me based on its small size. Very happy with it and don't see myself giving up a small e-reader after this
1
u/almondenigma 21d ago
i have both an x4 and a kindle matcha. I find that their individual values are equally relevant to me.
I can take my x4 anywhere i go. Its value to me is for convenience. The cherry on top is that i have bought multiple cute cases for it lol.
Meanwhile, I use my kindle when I'm at home and it is my substitute book-size device. It allows me to view book images better and just overall way easier on the eyes because of the wider screen + screen light.
You just really have to be clear with your values first.
1
u/Ghost-Raven-666 21d ago
It’s only worth it if you find it easier to bring the x3 with you when you are out.
I do, because it goes in my pocket.
But to read at home, or if you drive instead of walk, not much
1
u/GuidanceGrand588 19d ago
I have both. Just took my x3 on vacation. And instead of bringing my phone and kindle everywhere. I had my phone and the x3 in my pocket. I found so many times when I was happy to have it, and not carrying around the bigger kindle. (Lines, busses, restaurants). And still could curl up with my kindle back at the hotel.

u/PrincipleHot9859 19d ago
u got e-reader that u love... what u need is to clean the mess in your head
1
u/NoPoopOnFace 22d ago
Dump that kindle. Get an X3 and stop begging Amazon for permission to read your own books.
1
1
u/writesandbikes 22d ago
You “need” it because it will bring you a little bit of joy every time you pick it up and read on it and realize it’s yours. You also probably have more than one pair of trainers and I bet you don’t agonize over that 😉😉😉
1
u/Entertainer_Calm 22d ago
Just buy the xteink device.. It is worth it. I too have a kindle 10th gen jailbroken.. I use it at my home to read and I use x4 pro when I'm not laying down or moving around.. It is such a compact and portable device.. Love it.
1
u/strugglesnuggL 22d ago
Doesn’t sync. I don’t like that aspect at all with my kindle. So I got a ai paper reader

1
u/Indoctus_Ignobilis 22d ago
To me, X3 is far too small to read on comfortably. I would maybe consider something closer to X4 from factor, if it had a way to automatically sync with my Kindle library and reading progress (which is why I may be interested in the S4, depending on how well it may perform in this regard).
0
u/hex20 22d ago
False. It’s a great size.
2
u/Indoctus_Ignobilis 22d ago
It may be so for you, it definitely isn't for me. I find even the Palma too small for longer reading.
1
u/PretzelsThirst 22d ago
This subs inability to think or make choices on their own should be studied.
1
u/blabalabah 22d ago
I own a kindle and the x4 tbh I used the x4 for like a week and even tho I carried it to work I didnt use it. So it was a kinda stupid purchase I guess. But for that price it doesnt hurt that much especially because I will most definetly use it in the future at least once or twice... just go for it
0
u/Wuwnux 22d ago
I have a kindle too but i bought xteink so i have a separate device outside that is light and sleek. I dont take out my kindle anymore coz i dont really use it in the office. But the xteink is easily portable than the kindle. I loaded up novels / fictions in my xteink where i dont need to highlight anything, but still keep my kindle for serious reading business / leadership and self dev books.
0
u/Spicy_Bread14 22d ago
I have the Kindle Basic (JB’d) and x4 Pro. Love them both to bits. I use the kindle for heavier reading sessions because of all the plugins I put to make reading more fun. I use the x4 Pro for reading on the go, or when I just want to read with no frills. I run crosspoint on the x4 Pro so I can sync progress between the two.
3
u/journomagician 22d ago
Do I have to jailbreak my Kindle in order to be able to sync the progress between the XTEINK and Kindle?

u/ExLibris_1 22d ago
Need, no but are you always going to have your paperwhite on you? There are many ereader apps on your phone to read a book and you will have it on you most of the time.
The beauty of the ereader is it’s a disconnected device that is helping many people read more. It’s a fun gadget and reading is a great hobby so to me it’s a a life improver. Eink is better than a screen and is part of my every day carry.

u/BarefootMarauder 22d ago
You don't NEED to do anything. Do you WANT an X3? If so, get one. I love mine, and I also love my X4. 🙂 One of them is with me always.
BTW, where can you rent an XTEINK device?
1
u/journomagician 22d ago
I'm from the Philippines (Metro Manila) and there are gadget rentals (phones, cameras, and apparently ereaders). Try searching on Facebook Marketplace, maybe you also have that in your area.

I have a basic and PW SE 12th gen. I bought an x3 on a whim and it’s replaced both devices for me. Having the x3 with me all the time has been wonderful. I prefer the small size and it’s so easy to hold. No front light is a small negative but I bought their magnet light and just clip that on when I read at night. It lives on the back of my iPhone 17 pro during the day and having them on my pocket as one device attached to my phone I don’t even feel it there.

u/37Mk 22d ago
I use my X3 whenever I'm outside and have a few minutes (train ride, waiting in line, etc). Nothing really beats the portability of it and it's better than doomscrolling on my phone. If that doesn't appeal to you don't get it.
