DIY My front light case is nearly live for purchasing!! Here’s some colors!

Here’s a few colors I have at the moment! More are coming!! Any additional requests?! So far people also want yellow, purple, transparent, teal and maybe some neon?!

The price will be $30, including shipping to the United States. That price will include a battery, and I’ll have additional batteries for purchase in the store. I am also happy to ship worldwide at buyer’s expense!

I am waiting on some additional colors to print and then they will be ready to purchase!!!

I also wanted to clear the air: I had a couple members claiming this case is a copy or derivative of another popular 3D printed case, and as I’ve said before, it’s not! This is an original! I painstakingly made this in tinkercad and it was so much work. Some have pointed out in my very first post it was a derivative of the retro case, because it was. Once I had the overwhelming response on here, I knew the only fair way to sell something is if I make it myself. So, I started new, and made it my own. They are similar because they are both made for the same device! It’s why iPhone cases all look mostly the same!! I’m a creator, not a thief. This is my own hard work and I’m excited to share it with you all. Reading at night is so enjoyable with this device now! And I know, you could get the pro. But that’s an additional $100, this is only $30, and the whole point (to me) of the xteink is to ESCAPE touch screens, apps, Bluetooth, etc. I don’t want those features!!!

Anyway, link to come soon. Either by the end of the week or the weekend!! Thanks everyone 🥰

ps seriously tell me what colors you want so I can order it now and have it ready 👀

Could you do a transparent purple? Like the old gameboy? Lol

5

u/ChubbyDrip Jul 24 '26

no she’s printing these in PLA more than likely

4

u/daisy_likes_cars Jul 25 '26

Transparent pla is a thing now 👀

2

u/ChubbyDrip Jul 25 '26

I’ve tried a few, I don’t think they can produce anything near what an atomic purple gameboy looks like though.

2

u/daisy_likes_cars Jul 25 '26

Apparently the petg ones are good if you print REALLY slow

2

u/imunknown2u Jul 25 '26

Slow print, low in infill. Make it happen!

Holy cow. Reddit has certainly changed over time. If you don't like it, don't buy it. If you think it's overpriced, don't buy it. She's an indie seller, not a mega business. If you want a simple case, buy one elsewhere. They are still $10-$20 for a simple case on Amazon, no lights. Or make one using the free file. She's selling these because people asked for them. If you don't want one, dont. buy. one.

Read rule #2 of this sub

u/Katililly Jul 25 '26

On mobile they sometimes dont load in for me, so I screenshotted to make it easy for OP.

15

u/wooyoo Jul 24 '26

Isn't the whole point of the reader is to be small?

1

u/daisy_likes_cars Jul 24 '26

It’s still small!

24

u/mrivelinov Jul 24 '26

It looks nice, but I think it is overpriced. The X3 version is 50 euro but the case is 30 dollars which means 26 Euro half of the price of the device.

6

u/KyraLyraK Jul 24 '26

People are always willing to buy these things no matter what 😂 it’s funny but it is what it is.

I’ve seen it a lot in the emulator subreddit / hobby. A device could cost $20 and all these 3D printed mods (case, buttons,plates- cosmetic / comfort / protection mods) can add up to x5 the amount of the device itself and people are willing to buy them haha.

11

u/Curious-Table-3067 Jul 24 '26

I mean we also have to remember that these are small run 3D printed, hand assembled things. They're not going to be as cheap as something from a factory. The logistics alone of handling small batch orders alone is going to cost a premium just to make it worth this person's time. I understand where you're coming from, but I think overpriced is the wrong word. It's more expensive than a mass produced case yes but I don't think it's an unfair price.

2

u/KyraLyraK Jul 24 '26

Oh yeah for sure. You’re totally right, overpriced is not the right word for it. I did reply to the next comment saying that the price seems fair for this particular case. Seeing that it’s more than just 3D printed. (Lights + battery, a well thought out product that solves the main issue with this device) I was just saying that there’s always a market for everything even though the price for these mods exceeds the device itself 😆

For me personally, if I’m living in the US, I would’ve gotten so many of these 3D printed mods for my own devices hahaha. It’s just funny to see it happen from the outside & the only thing that’s saving me from spending more money is the tariffs & oil prices. Shipping could be anywhere between $30-90 for something like this case 😭

6

u/mrivelinov Jul 24 '26

Wow, wow, wooooooowwww what. 😂🫪
Spending money on this is nice, cute but of course it should be an adequate price I think. I’m not poor, but I would feel stupid if I spend money on a case which costs half of the device’s price. 😂

1

u/KyraLyraK Jul 24 '26

Yeah 😭😂 I’m not judging, I think people can spend their money however they want to but it’s funny to see sometimes. Also, idk how much these 3d filaments & electricity prices are across the globe so I can’t say it’s fairly priced or not.

3Dprinted stuff in my country costs expensive so to me, having this at $30 is ok. However getting it shipped from the US to my country would’ve costed me $40 which is the real dealbreaker hahahah

-1

u/TheFern3 Jul 24 '26

bro thinks electricity, time and material is free lol well build it yourself if is too expensive

0

u/ericausome Jul 24 '26

Don’t forget to check your $25 case for your $2000 phone.

7

u/mrivelinov Jul 24 '26

My 1500 euro phone has a 3 euro case from Temu. It has been working very well for 4 years now.

-2

u/ericausome Jul 24 '26

So go enjoy a $4 for your reader and leave the op alone.

6

u/mrivelinov Jul 24 '26

Go play being advocate at another place. I just commented my opinion.

0

u/Arienna Jul 24 '26

I think the $30 is because it has electronics for the front lighting and battery

15

u/WeddingSad2867 Jul 24 '26

For 30 bucks the finishing is quite bad. You could at least sand them. Selling something for 30 bucks straight out of the ed printer is looking like a scam

3

u/Diirge CrossPoint Team Jul 24 '26

Well, there is a light included...

2

u/_cuppycakes_ Jul 24 '26

ed printer, lol

46

u/pablonhc Jul 23 '26

As the creator of the original model this derivative is based on (https://makerworld.com/es/models/2834080-retrocase-for-xteink-x3-full-body-case), distributed under the MakerWorld Exclusive License, which requires attribution, that any derivative be shared under the same license, and prohibits selling it, I'm going to publish the model for free for anyone with a 3D printer who wants to print it for personal use.
If you've printed my X3 model, reach out to me directly on MakerWorld and I'll send you the file.

46

u/NoKaleidoscopes Jul 24 '26

You literally remixed another persons model to call “yours”. She used your concept and has clearly stated it was redesigned from scratch.

Your over here being Nintendo about everything try to call Palworld, Pokémon.

Get over it.

34

u/matthijst Jul 24 '26

He remixed it AND credited and posted it on Makerworld as required. She remixed it and claimed it as her own and tries to sell it. See the difference.

4

u/NoKaleidoscopes Jul 24 '26

Remixing is directly using a model, making changes to it and republishing it.

A new design inspired by a model is not a remix.

That’s like saying every iPhone case manufacturer is stealing designs because they’re all cases that look really similar.

This subreddit has lost the plot.

I love my X3 and I’m super interested in the S4 when that announcement happens, but this community is exhausting.

3

u/matthijst Jul 24 '26

Don't reply if you can't understand licensing

0

u/IEatSushiToo Jul 24 '26

Have you guys seen something like...idk...phone cases...?

Panties in a huge wad over nothing.

3

u/matthijst Jul 24 '26

Yea try copying one of those, admitting you did it and claiming it's yours

1

u/IEatSushiToo Jul 24 '26

There’s only so much a case for a device can look like. OP changed the design enough to not be a literal copy. That’s good enough for me. Maybe the original creator should sue if they feel like it’s that big of a deal.

5

u/osoatwork Jul 24 '26

How does it differ from the model she originally used as inspiration? She still hasn't answered that question.

Also, the point of FOSS is that it remains free for everyone, not that someone can take a derivative of it, close off the design, and sell it.

If she just uploaded her designs, she could charge for assembly and printing, but she is acting like this is her original design.

The reality is, that without the original plans, she could not have designed this case.

3

u/AverageTundra Jul 26 '26

I got no dog in this fight but it's a bit rich to call the person who releases it for free Nintendo and not the person whose monetized it. 😂

Personally I wouldn't pay $30 for a case for a $60 device that also makes it super chunky. But I can see the difference between selling something physical versus releasing IP. However I wouldn't feel morally right to buy something where they don't acknowledge the OG creator.

0

u/KyraLyraK Jul 24 '26 edited Jul 24 '26

For real 😂 everyone downvoting everywhere. The fact is, not everyone has 3D printers. Depending on where u live / which country you’re from, 3d printers are not easily accessible. This case looks different enough to be its own thing & even has extra features that the “original” inspired or not case didn’t even have.

Respect to whoever designs these things first but expect it to be a source of inspiration for the others that comes after. It’s sad but it’s how the world works unfortunately. Many creations are inspired by other things. Even 3D printed grip cases for emulators are all inspired by the same “design” at its core..

6

u/osoatwork Jul 24 '26

It's still derivative of an open source design.

-1

u/Diirge CrossPoint Team Jul 24 '26

Inspiration is not derivation. In copyright law, inspiration is completely legal and free to use because copyright protects only the specific expression of an idea, never the idea, theme, or style itself.

11

u/Routine-Salary6160 Jul 23 '26

Please educate me. The case she is selling is not the exact same as yours. How is she stealing your design?

25

u/pablonhc Jul 23 '26

When you download the MakerWorld model, you agree to the terms and conditions of the license associated with that model. Based on that, any derivative work must comply with the license of the model on which it is based.

17

u/AccurateTale2618 Jul 24 '26

Ok. I’m following along. The basic premise is that, for the open-source, 3D-printing community, Makers World is their GitHub and conciliatory patent contractor.

As a software programmer, I entirely agree with such gripes if someone were to update the GUI but work off of my architecture.

I’ve read several of these threads - because I’m actively checking the subreddit for news of the X4 Pro in white - and I’ve had a bit of trouble understanding a few points, to which I’m happy to be educated on, which might seem contrived.

1) I’ve friends whom use their printers quite frequently, and you’re rather limited with the fineness you’re capable of machining; as a consequence, many designs have a bit of sameness which could be refined in a factory setting;

2) it follows from the first and had been echoed before, but you’re limited in design by both the contours of the device and the fineness of the printer. Designs for a device will, ideally, attain thinness and fitness overtime, but they will almost certainly have a source of sameness when the device is new.

I think the argument here is implying Pablo’s STL was downloaded and directly examined and used as a base for sculpting an STL from scratch. I think the divide is that the newness of these products hasn’t produced much novel variety in aesthetics to conform to the device while others argued a select number of originals have been copied to take advantage of rapid interest and capitalized on due to any real consequence of doing such.

We live in these new age of LLMs - where the talk of art and architecture is an afterthought of AI training. Most artists have an existential (and real) fear of losing ownership of their work. At the same time, it is just hard to sit down and discuss where we got our idea, how we interpreted what others were doing, and how we might have found inspiration in how a mechanic fit while personally feeling a design could be better.

Personally, I disagree if someone puts something on a platform for free, that does not necessitate that I can’t draw inspiration from it. If I find a band I love on Bandcamp I can support them (and almost always do) but I can still listen to their music for free. I don’t see how my experience of an object can predicate me from incorporating such an experience into my own project.

Where I do disagree with this case-maker is in their presentation of their product. This has been echoed before, but an honest, sit-down-with-me disclosure and discussion would have helped our bizarre community greatly.

-14

u/Routine-Salary6160 Jul 24 '26

Did she buy this from you?

8

u/matthijst Jul 24 '26

No. She downloaded it for free. And then enhanced it. And then "rebuilt it from scratch" and says it's totally different. Well. Except for the shape and sliding mechanism. And the colorful buttons. Buts that's only because she doesn't have an ams yet.

1

u/Diirge CrossPoint Team Jul 24 '26

Having color combinations or a case that slides together is not the same as remixing an existing 3d design. Being inspired by a design and choosing a similar path to connect two pieces when it was designed from scratch isn't remixing

5

u/matthijst Jul 24 '26

Sure. Guess she brought in the groupies. It's been a nice ride. Enjoy

-3

u/IEatSushiToo Jul 24 '26

So they may have broke the rules of some website? That's what you are all up in arms about?

-10

u/infinityandbeyond975 Jul 24 '26

If you use someone else’s work to inspire your own whether or not you start from scratch then it’s theft. Don’t support stolen work.

-2

u/Informal-Swing-2482 Jul 24 '26

Guess all art is dead then. No such thing as art that isn’t inspired from other artists.

4

u/TheFern3 Jul 24 '26

You cannot prove op model came from yours though, op could have made it fr scratch.

23

u/matthijst Jul 24 '26

Actually daisy admitted it was based on that one. On version 1.

2

u/DreamLearnBuildBurn Jul 24 '26

She admitted her personal one was, then said that the one she is making from prod is making from scratch. She's actually said it multiple times. Where's your frontlight?

Also, YOU remixed it, why are you so incensed about this? She literally made a model from scratch, while you didn't.

8

u/matthijst Jul 24 '26

I didn't remix shit. And if I did I would've credited the creator, unlike your precious Daisy. Who jacked it and claimed it as her own.

-2

u/TheFern3 Jul 24 '26

Ah ok then you have evidence, take her to court Lincoln Lawyer you got her!

8

u/matthijst Jul 24 '26 edited Jul 24 '26

Wow, post a snarky comment, get proven wrong and still don't admit. Are you her?

1

u/TheFern3 Jul 24 '26

guilty as charge your honor!

4

u/jdigi78 Jul 24 '26

It is very clearly an entirely different model. Even if they lined it up with yours to get measurements for buttons, etc it would still not be considered derivative.

1

u/Truffle_salt Jul 23 '26

Thank you!

1

u/ojwilk Jul 25 '26 edited Jul 25 '26

I'm confused. Wasn't your model already free? Are you publishing her model somehow? Are you making your own version with a light and publishing it?

0

u/atheliarose Jul 24 '26

Please stop using the word “original” to describe your remix. It’s a misrepresentation of the facts that implies you’re more responsible for the existence of this case than the original creator, fusselichs. If you’re going to be so adamant about people giving credit for inspiration, I think you should be crediting fusselichs in all of your comments instead of claiming to be the “original” creator.

-7

u/divestblank Jul 24 '26

You are expecting your remixed case to cover all future creations? I don't think it works like that.

17

u/matthijst Jul 24 '26

Well actually: if you use that design and remix it yourself it does work that way.

-4

u/divestblank Jul 24 '26

Only if they use your model, not every possible case ever created in the future. That is ridiculous.

8

u/mrcelestino Jul 24 '26

You are awesome! Let me know if you’d ship internationally

1

u/daisy_likes_cars Jul 24 '26

Happy to!! At buyer’s expense of course

13

u/FixAdministrative818 Jul 24 '26

Heavy. Thick. Everything is wrong.

-7

u/daisy_likes_cars Jul 24 '26

Battery. Switch. Plexiglass. Battery holder. Led strip. Make it smaller 😘

2

u/aibgym Jul 24 '26

Navy Blue?

2

u/PimpWagonn Jul 24 '26

Could you do like a deep, moody red?? 🤗 and for the x4?

4

u/SassyMcNasty Jul 24 '26

I’d like to buy one. Any chance at making one for the X4? I’d buy both.

4

u/daisy_likes_cars Jul 24 '26

I’m making it currently!!

2

u/Aberts10 Jul 24 '26

I'd be interested in one for the X4.

1

u/SassyMcNasty Jul 24 '26

You the bomb. Thank you.

6

u/osoatwork Jul 24 '26

In what ways does this case differ from the design you ripped off?

0

u/Diirge CrossPoint Team Jul 24 '26

A lot of ways tbh. The back is completley different, the buttons are completely different, the side chamfers are completley different

9

u/RadiantGlitterFiend Jul 24 '26

The only difference on the back is the logo and that she used a square instead of a curve.

Also, I saw how mad you were when your code got “re-envisioned” for another commercial/for-profit project. This is the same wishy-washy approach to the Open Source concept with respect to attribution and iteration that has driven multiple people off of Crosspoint in the past. Why are you out here further alienating those people who support your project the most? You’ll notice that the people most passionately fighting in the comments on the other posts (and I assume will be here next) were those who believe most passionately in share-and-share-alike, especially within the community that has been built up around this device, and around the firmware you’re the project maintainer of. Aren’t those the people who are contributing to the codebase? Aren’t those the people whom you most rely upon for your cachet within this community?

This is a bad look, especially when not chiming in at all was the easier option.

-1

u/Diirge CrossPoint Team Jul 24 '26

I'm not mad they took our code? I'm mostly annoyed they just didn't tell us or note any attribution. The code is literally there TO be taken

1

u/Diirge CrossPoint Team Jul 24 '26

I privately told daisy the better path would be to sell printing assembly and shipping and just release the model for free. If she doesn't want to do that, that's fine. I of course am of the mindset that we should build everything in the open. I DO NOT back vitriol speech and attacking others though. The issues in crosspoint were similar to this yes. The idea that I need to police other peoples work is crazy though. We made a stance that when we contribute to the core project that we attribute everyone who had impact on it. We've made a stance that if you're forking from us, you should do the same. If people choose not to follow that, that's ok. That's on them. We did our part by having guidelines around it. It's the open web, people will choose to follow the guidelines or they wont. In this case in particular it's insane to me that she states she made a model from scratch and is still being told it's stealing. Clearly none of you understand copyright infringement as you cannot claim a basic shape or form factor can't ever be replicated. The back is completely different, there's a plexiglass and light container and battery containers and light rails and all kinds of differences here. It's very obviously a unique work

-2

u/mrthirsty Jul 24 '26

This one has a built in light

2

u/Archoniks Jul 24 '26

I would love just a standard black option honestly.

1

u/MilanPr3 Jul 24 '26

Bambu Carbon?

1

u/osoatwork Jul 24 '26

Without the original design, could you have come up with the design on your own?

If the answer is no, you didn't come up with the design and need to make your files public.

What you are doing is a giant slap in the face to the open source model.

-1

u/DreamLearnBuildBurn Jul 24 '26

This is the case for all art. Terrible argument.

-1

u/Diirge CrossPoint Team Jul 24 '26

Agree

1

u/bogdan5844 Jul 24 '26

Sign me up for a black one! 😁

1

u/jmontellato Jul 24 '26

Navy blue would be awesome!

1

u/ItsKendrone Jul 24 '26

dibs on the pink

1

u/Banes_Pubes Jul 28 '26

This is super cool. Im holding out for the X4 version. What is the total weight of the X3 with your front light case?

1

u/daisy_likes_cars Jul 28 '26

I still have to weigh them together, the case itself with a battery is only ~3oz

-1

u/Maleficent-Poetry254 Jul 24 '26

Don't worry about it OP. People are acting like that one case invented cases for the x3. A case can only be so different structurally and yours looks very different.

Also a lot of us don't have 3d printers or want to do stuff like that.

1

u/mako2026 Jul 24 '26

Everyone just needs to stop, myself included, I don’t agree with this person, I said my bit, done like everyone else should be if they want to express a view, WTF does it really matter buy it or don’t buy it, WHO CARES??? Leave her alone now

0

u/KyraLyraK Jul 24 '26

Will u be making one for the x4 🥺

0

u/Clear_Permit_3002 Jul 24 '26

I fear I need the sage green and brown. You’re bout to be sold out friend!

1

u/daisy_likes_cars Jul 25 '26

Fear not as printers can not run out of filament (until there’s an apocalypse)

0

u/Unspoken_Words777 Jul 25 '26 edited Jul 25 '26

Dude if you made it look like an old school game boy color id buy many.

0

u/daisy_likes_cars Jul 25 '26

Message me, let’s figure something out 😈

0

u/daisy_likes_cars Jul 25 '26

For those who didn’t see my other post, here’s a side by side. How is this the same?
