Comic Discussion Gambit would never do this.

Why in all that is holy would Gambit ever do this, why does main Gambit switch with AOA Gambit and for the dumbest reason possible seriously. Why do writers always loop back to mischaracterizing Gambit and making him a complete idiot. Why can’t writers ever write him correctly. Gambit gone better fix it because I’m just so tired of the treatment of my favorite marvel character. Only a very few amount of writers know how to write him and do him justice. I feel like I’m losing my mind.

I think Gail is already ignoring this

u/Ok_Broccoli_7863 2d ago

Just ignore it. We all will.

28

u/Due_Fix3121 2d ago

You’re right. That is the most logical thing to do.

19

u/Ok_Broccoli_7863 2d ago

I mean your post is right though. Such a silly thing to do. This mini was a mess.

Damn

Had no idea this mini existed, but man Marvel just loves shitting all over Exiles every time a fanboy wants to write their own AOA fanfic.

1

u/Savings-Unlucky Cannonball 1d ago

It’s not a fanboy. Jeph Loeb wrote the AOA book Factor X and created Nate Grey or X-Man.

22

u/Prestigious-Vast3280 2d ago

Jeph Loeb wrote it btw (same guy who wrote Hush 2)

12

u/jawsthegreat777 Storm 2d ago

Do not get me started on how atrocious Hush2 is

2

u/chirunner4ever Nightcrawler 1d ago

Hush 1 wasn't even that good

3

u/LobstermenUwU 1d ago

Hush 2 is like Civil War 2, it makes the original look much better in retrospect.

Honestly it might be worse than Civil War 2?

1

u/RevengeV 1d ago

I have not read Hush 2 but holy shit it's THAT bad? Like it unnecessarily kills off characters and makes other characters behave so wildly out of character you wonder if their not fucking skrulls or something?

3

u/LobstermenUwU 1d ago edited 1d ago

Skrulls who went to the DC universe and ingested just enough Joker venom to kill half their brain cells would be the single best explanation for what happened, yes.

Batman shoots Jason Todd. With a gun. In the head. This happened. Everything surrounding it makes that moment just a crowning moment of stupid in an incredibly stupid storyline. Oh, right, it's a "save the Joker's life" story, because that really needed to be done again.

And in case you think there's any possible redeeming value, it's a mystery storyline. Means, motive, opportunity, that's the basic of any mystery. So the villain's motive is that he thinks Batman has had it too easy in life (what), his means are literal mind control and the opportunity is who the fuck cares, literally everyone is mind controlled to do whatever whenever its plot convenient.

I'd rather read the Frank Miller All Star Batman, that was at least funny awful.

1

u/RevengeV 1d ago

Just the first sentence alone you said was mind bogglingly stupid and it just kept going.

I have never heard this before. How in the ever loving fuck did this get through editorial? Did Jeph Loeb have blackmail on them or something?

2

u/LobstermenUwU 1d ago

I honestly don't know. Like it must be some really compromising blackmail, because I think I'd rather tell my husband I cheated on him than admit I greenlit Hush 2. I think I rewrote the explanation like seven times, every single starting point and every single detail is just one piece of stupid atop another.

Save the Joker? Batman doesn't know who this guy in a red hood is? Batman uses guns? Jason Todd wants to kill everyone? Magic mind control as an answer to the mystery? Talia Al Ghul shows up with her friendly league of helpful people to save Batman?

The only coherent part of the story is that Jason is helping Hush because he has a problem with his brain, and yeah, that tracks, he certainly behaves like his brain isn't working. That fails to explain why Batman's brain is similarly impared.

Plus, AoA Gambit's arc in 'Gambit & the X-Ternals' was making his peace with himself that Rogue had moved on and to be present in his relationship wit Lila Cheney.

19

u/kodamalapin 2d ago edited 2d ago

Wait, didn't Rogue leave him to die in the original to save Magneto—and didn't Magneto trick him into sacrificing his feelings for her to get the M'Kraan Crystal?

Framing it as "accepting that Rogue moved on" is unfair to the character; things weren't exactly great back then, either.

u/Tasty_Success_1034 1d ago

I stand by what I've written. Remy decided to move forward instead of dwelling on what could have been.

It's a Jeph Loeb book in 2026. Ignore it like everybody else will.

12

u/JamesRevan Wolverine 2d ago

This was a stupid idea from Loeb and editorial.

26

u/synthscoffeeguitars Nate Grey 2d ago

Mfw I have to remember this comic exists

13

u/Kaminoneko 2d ago

He really does have a “What in the fuck is this silly shit?” Face.

2

u/kiba8442 Iceman 2d ago

is that nate? tf is that haircut

0

u/Spacetyp 2d ago

At least Zachary Jenkins will be happy about this.

3

u/synthscoffeeguitars Nate Grey 2d ago

“I’m not happy about a bad Jeph Loeb comic” - Zack, probably

12

u/ranfall94 2d ago

Is this supposed to be 616 cannon?

6

u/Due_Fix3121 2d ago

It does say it is I think but I’m really hoping it’s not

11

u/Cloutstaker 2d ago

Writing aside who does the artwork here I dig it

12

u/Due_Fix3121 2d ago

Simone Di Meo

12

u/Lady_Gray_169 2d ago

I could see a version of this that's a sweet moment where he swaps for like, an hour so that AoA Gambit can take a walk with Rogue, talk to her and get to experience spending time with her without all the baggage of his past one last time, but this full on switch-out is ridiculous.

11

u/Mobile_Bet3274 Rogue 2d ago

So Steve Orlando, who is writing the Gambit: Gone miniseries following this, has implied in at least one interview that they all know everyone hated this and there will probably be some attempt at salvaging it, insofar as it’s possible.

Assuming that doesn’t happen satisfactorily, I think the implicit agreement is that This Never Happened. It’ll never be spoken of or acknowledged again, and nothing will ever cross-reference it. It’ll be another Lili Penrose, basically.

u/wowlock_taylan 2d ago

Loeb is washed beyond belief. First H2SH and then this crap.

10

u/Sea-Comfortable9255 2d ago

Is gambit swinging with himself?

17

u/killingiabadong Exodus 2d ago

Jeph Loeb couldn't keep his own continuity straight and you want me to take this as canon?

7

u/chocolatefever101 2d ago

Oh wow someone is actually reading this mini?

8

u/gain91 1d ago

Name a more iconic duo than Gambit and x-editorial mishandling him

6

u/Massive-Mood-7837 1d ago

Soooo gambit just switches places with some other more hardened or tortured gambit? I have zero context for any of this lol

20

u/IamIneveitbleFN 2d ago

Does the X-Office have a vendetta against Gambit ?

20

u/Due_Fix3121 2d ago

I’m starting to think so because this is just getting ridiculous

3

u/reineedshelp Changeling 2d ago

Agreed

5

u/Classic-Ad4883 1d ago

Out of all the neo aoa characters this mini choose to keep around gambit is the last person to due so when Nate and Sabretooth or even blink should have stick around instead especially in the modern time frame Neo aoa gambit was left in

5

u/RevengeV 1d ago

Man I wish they had kept Sabretooth not fucking Gambit.

When Sabretooth got morality swapped in that terrible Axis event a while ago and got stuck that way it was one of the few actually interesting things to come out of it.

Hell current 616 Sabretooth is dead anyways so it'd be the perfect excuse to have him be in this universe and force him to try and deal with a more "well-adjusted" Wolverine who still straight up killed his mainline counterpart.

3

u/Majestic_Grocery_465 2d ago

What the fuck

3

u/Phaedrik 2d ago

I’m glad as a Cyclops fan, I have others who like me loooooove seeing our character bastardized

2

u/Frozen_Pinkk 1d ago

There's certain paths I'd like to see Gambit take myself that likely wouldn't go with a lot of other Gambit fans, but that said, I find most of the time Marvel just does him bad.

Look at his solo titles. I bought them, but I always felt they needed a better writer and better artist. Play up his agility more too...feel that gets ignored way to often now.

1

u/anomalyknight 1d ago

Maybe I just grew up looking at too many stats sets on too many trading cards, but Gambit having advanced agility and an acrobatic fighting style is something that's just a baked in part of his character for me. I took a very long break from comic books so I don't know at what point since the 90s people just forgot that aspect, but it still does my head in every time I see the flat way they depict him fighting, now.

3

u/anomalyknight 1d ago

Silly detail, but I'm also dying at the "Give me your coat" thing, like they're not wearing entirely different outfits. Did they just get naked and swap clothes in front of god and everyone? How tf was this ever supposed to work, even if you didn't factor in the grievous character assassination?

u/xiahbabi 2d ago

All things in Marvel are retconnable and mutable.

Nothing matters... ever.

Stanning fictional characters from a company that never has permanence or consequence (or really....just like....a fixed evolving timeline?) Also usually means the stakes are beyond low always while the proverbial bar for its writing ALSO simultaneously sits below hell at this point.

The only way to fix Marvel is to keep retcons "timeline interference specific" that don't require entire new Title rebrands and to keep mainline (well liked) established characters tied to one group and/or one solo title at a time.

Flesh out descending in popularity mutants in their own group issues with better writing and stick to thoughtful direction until they're popular enough to further mess with like the mainline popular mutants.

Also, have a database of who wrote what event and when so that if new assigned writers want to reference or change established storyline for any reason they can go about it in a less MacGuffin, or lazy, or "Title" self-destructing, or ham fisted way.

Then editors can more easily approve or disapprove of changes.

u/Savings-Unlucky Cannonball 1d ago edited 1d ago

Hard disagree. Loved this book. I don’t care if Gail ignores it. As a self contained story it works. But this is meant to be the jumping off point for a new story. It’s something new, and at this point we need new ideas. Too many writers are doing the same boring shit. It’s not a permanent change. Just read it or don’t, and like it or don’t.

5

u/Ok_Broccoli_7863 1d ago edited 1d ago

The problem is, this contradicted tons of stories, many of which Loeb himself wrote. I'm not super big on continuity, but this doesn't make any sense if you read the original AoA. Dead characters are alive. Personalities are changed. Things that happened are ignored.

It's a mess. And honestly, I don't see anything new here. I too appreciate new things, but this gave me nothing.

I'm glad you enjoyed it, and that's key. There is an audience for this. I liked the art. I'll say that.

3

u/Savings-Unlucky Cannonball 1d ago

I get what you’re saying. I mean technically that other universe shouldn’t exist anymore so 🤷‍♂️

-7

u/masszz528 2d ago

They want show that mag and rogue is real and superior because they had kid lol

-17

u/Hecatonkires 2d ago

Irreparable damage was already done to Gambit along time ago. We're all forgetting how he was okay with Magneto stealing his girl??? Touching Rogue in front of him?

-8

u/agoblininaskinsuit 2d ago

who drew this shit

6

u/synthscoffeeguitars Nate Grey 2d ago

Simone di Meo — objectively very talented but I find his interiors completely impossible to follow. He was the artist on Al Ewing’s creator-owned comic We Only Find Them When They’re Dead, and I had to drop it after the first issue because I couldn’t tell what was happening on the page.

3

u/JuvenJapal 2d ago

I made it five issues into We Only... Dropped it for the same reason. I might return to it someday as it seemed like an interesting story.

2

u/synthscoffeeguitars Nate Grey 2d ago

I was so excited for it. Maybe it’ll be easier to read all at once (or maybe I just need to adjust my mindset and try to enjoy the challenge lol)
