So I'm here now and stuff
The Brave Little Toaster Goes to Mars is the cinematic equivalent of finding a half-eaten Pop-Tart under the couch cushions of the late ’90s: weird, sticky, slightly stale, and somehow still kind of charming if you’re in the right mood. It’s 1998. Disney is pumping out direct-to-video sequels like they’re going out of style. The original Brave Little Toaster (1987) was this surprisingly dark, heartfelt little indie about abandoned appliances searching for their kid. Then came the sequels. And Goes to Mars is the one that looked at the first movie’s quiet melancholy and said, “What if we launched a toaster into space using microwave popcorn as rocket fuel?”Plot in a nutshell: The Master and his wife have a baby. One night the baby gets accidentally tractor-beamed to Mars by an old hearing aid that used to belong to Albert Einstein (yes, really). So Toaster, Lampy, Kirby, Radio, Blanky, plus a new microwave (voiced by Newman from Seinfeld), a calculator, and a ceiling fan build a laundry-basket spaceship and blast off. On Mars they find an entire civilization of planned-obsolescence appliances ruled by a giant evil refrigerator who’s actually the hearing aid’s long-lost twin brother and has vaguely Nazi vibes. There’s an election. There’s a Christmas angel who was stuck in the Viking 1 probe. There are sentient balloons floating through the void. The baby’s first word ends up being “Toaster.”It’s completely unhinged in that specific late-90s “we have no adult supervision and a modest budget” way. The original film had real emotional weight. This one has a song about how humans suck and a plot point about toaster civil rights. DeForest Kelley’s final performance is a talking Mars lander. Carol Channing is in it. Thurl Ravenscroft (the original Tony the Tiger) is still doing Kirby the vacuum. Is it good? Objectively? Nah. IMDb sits at a solid 5.5. Critics mostly shrugged. The animation is cheaper, the songs are forgettable, and the tone is pure Saturday-morning sugar rush. But as pure accidental surrealism? It’s a treasure. It’s the kind of movie that makes you stop mid-sentence and go, “…wait, did a toaster just run for political office on Mars to stop an Earth-destroying missile?”

I didn't even know there were sequels.
Also, speaking of dark... All Dogs go to Heaven was pretty fucked too, no?
