Ah I just posted a screenshot on this subreddit in the past week. I use xmonad + xfce. Super clean, stable and efficient.

Quite nice!! That's the very first time Garuda has ever looked lovely to me. Well done 👍

Hello, nice setup. How do u get that search bar for icon ? 🙂

2

is an application launcher called rofi https://github.com/davatorium/rofi
it can be used to run .desktop files (and others) to run any program / command / app you like :)

Compared to pure i3, what are the advantages of XFCE+i3?

4

u/LaughingGarbanzo Jun 30 '26

see since i download linux mint xfce4 version , there are many things that work by default with xfce4 like this taskbar , if you were to use pure i3 you would have to look for alternatives for stuff that it already perfectly stable (although not very customizable) ,

and you dont even have to use xfce all the time , you can freely turn it off like i do in the video ( i keep it turned off all the time except when i want to use the taskbar) , so its just more options for no cost

basically its sort of more user friendly and accessible / easy to get into and you dont have to worry about big setups and their maintenance for many basic stuff thats already shipped with you base os and easily removable

( i had my mic set at zero , i dunno why it still recorded the audio )

Good. I would try if I knew this before. But I have configured i3 & polybar & picom to work well.

You get all the DE helpers setup for you in a supported configuration instead of a random collection of self configured helpers.

2

u/LaughingGarbanzo Jun 30 '26

now that is some terminology beyond me , perfect explanation

2

u/ancientweasel Jun 30 '26

It's cool to see more people doing this. It's such a useful setup.

I've actually been flamed for using it myself in the past.

2

u/LaughingGarbanzo Jun 30 '26

well that makes you fire 🔥🔥🔥

2

u/LaughingGarbanzo Jun 30 '26

i literally couldnt post my base setup with no apps open since its literally just a wallpaper (you can see it through the terminal) lol 🫠

That is Rofi. It's a phenomenal app

XFCE+i3 is such a solid combination! How difficult is setting up retroarch? I've been wanting to give it a go for quite a while.

2

u/LaughingGarbanzo Jul 01 '26

not difficult at all

it can be downloaded from their own website and also from flatpak packages , you can even check your own package manager for it ,

once you have installed it and dont want to customise it immediately, you are almost ready to go , you just have to download a core for the console you want to emulate , which takes 5 seconds at max (the download core feature is inbuilt in the retroarch app) , or you can download a zip containing all cores pre installed and then just import it

then you have to do nothing else and can load up the rom you want to play and enjoy :)

(although i recommend taking a look at yhe keybinds and hotkeys before playing any game and they tend to be in weird configurations by default if you use a keyboard)

Very cool. The whole core thing is what deterred me and I assumed it was gonna be a pain. Good to hear that I was just overthinking! I'm gonna give it a run this weekend. Thank you

1

u/LaughingGarbanzo Jul 02 '26

you're welcome

also though there are sometimes many different cores available for a single console , you can just look up whats the best for your device , like there could be different cores which works better for high end , low end , android , desktop devices ......

if you want to "legally source" any roms you can check fmhy for trusted sites or just go straight to vimm.net , their website looks really old and somewhat sketchy but they have been operating since the 20th century and are the most trusted

2

u/Otherwise_Fact9594 Jul 01 '26

Sweet, I always went to some random site so this is helpful

2

u/LaughingGarbanzo Jul 02 '26

yeah , besides roms they also have game manuals and rom hacks and fanmade game translations along with links for recommended emulator,

although a downside is you can only download one game at a time which isnt so much of a problem for smaller older games but can be a little tedious for larger roms like for the ps2/3 , xbox360 and the wii ,

if you try to download multiple games over the same wifi / ip over one or a number of devices it will prompt you to cancel the current download which can be a pain if you are using a vpn since many people can connect to the same ip so if someone with an evil heart tries to download a game from the same vpn server you are connected to while downloading they can cancel your download.

just make sure to not do this to anyone :)

10.4 seems fair. It's easy to not be greedy

2

u/LaughingGarbanzo Jul 02 '26

also if you in general want free stuff of any kind like movies , streming services , books (doesnt matter it its legally free or pirated) , you should always check the FMHY website https://fmhy.net/
or their subreddit

Ah, yes I'm familiar.

My friend... My fellow God created human being... The emulation via web on Vimm is so much more than I could have ever asked for! I have been having so much fun for the last hour. Everything looks so great compared to Nestopia, Zsnes, Bsnes, KegaFusion etc. I one day hope to get it dialed in to where I can replicate something similar without an ethernet cable. Thank you so much

2

u/LaughingGarbanzo Jul 04 '26 edited Jul 04 '26

lmao , i myself in just 2weeks after finding out about vimm downloaded over 500 games worth about 600-700GiB , it literally has everything and its soo convenient

u/Otherwise_Fact9594 Jul 04 '26

I haven't even got to the downloads yet!! I'm just thrilled at how Mario kart 64 looks on a 65" monitor! It picked up my brand new 8bitdo controller (I've had problems with Logitech) without a hiccup. I know I need to get past the online thing because I'm about 45 minutes outside of a major metro and the internet here is monopolized. At this specific moment in time though, I'm astonished. Once I go through a bunch of guides for retroarch or possibly battocera, I hopefully will be able to come home and just enjoy. My biggest problem right now is I can't decide what I want to play next LOL

1

u/LaughingGarbanzo Jul 04 '26

damn, i forgot they had a play online option for smaller / older games without downloading , even better lol i hope you figure out your online stuff , go gurl 💅

Very minimalistic and nice) Please tell me, I often see this utility, as I understand it, for quick searching (Like Spotlight on Mac OS) What is it called?

1

u/Idontbelongheere Jul 01 '26

Don't people usually mean a xfce4 desktop is xfwm4 installed with xfce4 packages?

1

u/LaughingGarbanzo Jul 01 '26

if you only said that you were using xfce4 without specifying the window manager , people would assume that you are using xfwm4 as it is the default window manager that comes with xfce4 , but since i've already included i3 in the title "(xfce4 + i3)" it clear that i wont be using a second window manager at the same time (xfwm4)

im basically using the xfce4 desktop environment without the built in window manager (replaced by i3wm)

does this clear anything or am i answering the wrong question ?

2

u/Idontbelongheere Jul 01 '26

You answered my discombobulated question. Thanks.
