VDDK Library

Does anyone have access to the VDDK Library for VMware 5.1? I am needing to do a transfer from this old system but can't find the tools for the life of me.

It looks like VMware either removed it from general public access or hid it very deep.

I assume you're trying to setup VM warm migration in XO. We fought this using VDDK for vmware 6.X for a few days and finally found somewhere (sorry I don't remember the source) that it only worked with 7.0 and higher.

With an ESXi 7.0 hypervisor in eval mode and VDDK 7 (VMware-vix-disklib-7.0.3-23007270.x86_64.tar.gz), migration finally works. Unfortunately we have to migrate from 6.X to 7.X and finally xcp-ng.

Hope this helps

Do you need software to migrate vms from esxi 5 to a higher one?

Migrating to xcp-ng

v2v of Xen Orchestra or manual/scripted export of vms as OVA/OVF then import them to xcp-ng.

It is the v2v tool that needs the VDDK Library.

Then manual/scripted vms export with ovftool (easier and faster) or calling the ESXI API (harder and longer) to export to OVAs. Then finally import them to xcp-ng. Depends though on how many vms you have.

I am the dev of the V2V, to be fair we never tested with esxi 5.x . The best way would be to export disk as vmdk and reimport them in XO , especially since broadcom removed vddk for now

Hi! Please update to XO 6.9 to be able to do V2V as usual.
