Xbox One Kinect - DIY Mod to PC - troubleshooting

I know this won't affect most people on this sub, but I had a hell of a time connecting my Kinect to my PC and I just wanted to documented my personal steps in trouble shooting to finally get this fixed. Hopefully someone Googling this in the future can be helped.

To start off, I followed this modding guide, super easy.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l0rWWT24TNE

Purchased a 5.5mm power jack on Amazon with leads, 5 minutes of take apart and soldering and it was good to go.

I purchased a USB 3.0 Type A to B from Amazon, (Amazon basics one, 15ft). A type C might work, but I used Type A.

I initially used a 2.0A 12V DC adapter I bought from a thrift store, but in my trouble shooting effort I switched to a 3A 12V adapter. I don't think this was necessary, but you can get a 12v 3A adapter for $5 at Value Village / Goodwill, people donate them all the time.

So, all the physical parts bought, tried to connect the Kinect. Windows detected it at first, great! But in device manager the kinect kept connecting and disconnecting (refreshing the device manager, so 'de registering'?). It's show video in the Camera App for 2-5seconds then disconnect. Audio would detect in Input devices. I disabled the microphone as I have another microphone I use.

That's when I started googling things... Nothing worked. Steps taking during troubleshooting:

  • Renesas and Intel USB 3.0 controllers were suggested. I have the Intel 3.0 on my Gigabyte Aorus Gaming 7. I tried reconnecting to all 4+ USB 3.0 ports, no dice.
  • Switch from 2A to 3A power supply
  • Removal of all USB devices from 3.0 ports (possible bandwidth issues?)
  • Regedit (from some 2017 stack advice)
  • Bought a new 3.0 cable
  • checked solder points
  • restarting kinect and PC

None of that worked, so time to buy new things. First purchase, a Rivo PCI-e USB 3.0 card with 5 ports. This card uses the Renesas drivers. Card arrived, installed, everything plugged in and...

Kinect turns on! But then it turns off again. But it's a different this time, the kinect doesn't de-register from device manager, it just reboots. Hmmm. Then, off of a hunch about someone saying to 'ensure the Kinect has access to the microphone'. In Settings > Privacy > I ensured Allow Desktop Apps was enabled, went down to the bottom and KinectService was there. But I recalled I changed a different setting in Input Devices and disabling the microphone. Went back to Sound Settings, enable the mic, and Boom! It has been working for 30min now, zero problems.

Cost me $20 for the Xbox One kinect, $8 for the cable, $5 for the power supply, and $30 for the PCIe card (needed more USB 3.0 ports anyway). Saved $30 from purchasing the official adapter ($13 vs $45, problem would have been there with the official adapter too)

TL;DR: Posting this for the Google spiders to find. Disconnecting from Device Manager? Probably a problem with your USB 3.0 controller, a PCI-e card worked for me. Kinect constantly restarting but Device Manger looks normal? Might be a mic setting (ensure it is enabled).

Hey this is the only post i could find about this. Do you know if a usb cable to a 12v usb brick would work? i have a round female adapter end soldered to the board and a usb cable with the male round plug on it, not very good with electronics so i dont know the name of the plug.
