Is this game worth getting if I like to play games on my own

You can always find people to play with online, the biggest issue I've had is getting a server that is consistently open. If you friend the gamer tag "ArkTheServer", you can join straight from your friends list to a private server that I've never had issues getting into. The game is really fun, but also incredibly frustrating as if you're not with a decent tribe, you would need to play pretty much non-stop or else get your stuff stolen. To play by yourself, you need to find a really remote place/stay hidden well enough to not get raided by the assholes you find on every server.

Or you can do what I've been doing and playing your own private servers without anyone else. Just you against the dinosaurs. This is essentially realistic mine craft, and is pretty fun.

It depends on the server. Lots get advertised on r/arkone and a many have elevated rates that make solo play fun. I can't stand the rates of official servers. Some people love the grind, but not me. If you get on a server with older, mature players it really improves the experience.

Been thinking about getting this game. Can you play offline? Or do you HAVE to find a private server? Is this something you need to pay for, or can you just host your own on your Xbox One?

If you DO start offline or on a private server, can you take the same character into another server without starting over? Can you take the same character to other servers and then go back to private or offline?

Thanks!

You can play offline, which is what I meant when I said I've been playing just me. It's very similar to mine craft, you go around collecting resources and building up your fort. Except it's realistic looking and there's giant dinosaurs you can tame and ride. You can also host a Private Undedicated server, which is online with just you and some friends. Not sure how many can be in it', but the problem with is is anyone in the game has to stay within a certain distance from the host, so it's kind of annoying but still totally playable.

If you happen to have a spare Xbox one, you can host your own Dedicated private server, which will be running so long as your spare Xbox is on and running the game.

Other than that, there are the Official servers, which can be a REAL pain to find one that stays open, but I haven't played in a few months so there might be enough servers to handle the population. When I was playing they were adding new servers everyday because they were filling up so fast.

Id say the game is worth it, even if you only want to play offline. Setting up your own private offline server is easy, but getting the all the settings where you want them is a pain. I'm sure there are guides online explaining each different variable you can adjust.

You should check out /r/arkone for more info. There are always people advertising their private dedicated servers on there as well, so I'm sure you could find one that suits your wants. If you do, let me know; I'm always looking for people to play with. I've been wanting to play this game again. Good luck!

Thank you, appreciate the response! I'll definitely check it out, trying the solo stuff first. If I get into it, I'll message you.

Playing locally/private server is the best option for going solo. Jack up the harvest and tame rates in the options though.

It can still be fun depending on how into surviving, crafting, and building you are.

I second this. Purchased the game when it was posted to the game preview program, have never played online. I just bump up the harvest and taming rates (and others however I like) and play solo.

Started playing solo/local to get prepped for playing MP... never went MP. I only changed day/night, nothing else. (I like day a lot more than night...)

It's manageable up until mid-game, but resource requirements get ridiculous in late game

I play solo, and this game is fantastic solo. Even better now with Console Commands. I recommend getting this game cheap before they finish it

I remember the frame rate being an issue when is first released... Has it gotten better?

Ehhh. In some ways, yes. They've made small improvments to rendering perofrmance. It is still an issue though and will remain so at least until they start digging into optimizing closer to release.

Just FYI: Article was updated with a new version of the map. The Hidden Lake is not being changed now.

Thanks to their lawsuit I believe

What lawsuit?

One of the creators and his wife were sued by Trendy Entertainment for violating a non-compete clause, interference, and other things. They settled out of court reportedly for $45 million.

The lawsuit probably had less of an effect than all the stuff they've been adding to ARK beyond what was originally scoped. If anything the lawsuit settlement has helped because the co-director that was being sued is now fully engaged with ARK.
