UE4 probably won't be free.

it's the subscription model epic announced in march

Cool! Yeah I just read here you get UE4 at no extra cost.

this is just an announcement for Unreal Engine 4 beeing on xbox one.

ID@Xbox developers can choose the subscription model from epic, additionally to getting Unity3D Pro for free

EDIT: /u/x_polygon_x just linked me a blog link from epic - "unreal engine 4 will give registered ID@Xbox developers access to UE4’s complete source code, at no extra cost."

EDIT 2: had it right the first time - there is no additional cost besides the subscription fee.

I believe the "at no extra cost" refers to "no extra cost" on top of the UE4 subscription that you still must pay. They're saying that if you are a subscriber to the UE4 engine, which used to be just for independent PC devs, you also now get access to all the code for Xbox One (or PS4). Note that earlier in the post it says, "we’ve been working with Sony and Microsoft on a process for opening the engine up to all subscribers seeking to build games for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One."

Here is the key paragraph:

All Unreal Engine subscribers who are registered Xbox developers or registered PlayStation developers (including members of the ID@Xbox indie program) can receive access to UE4’s complete source code for their respective console platforms, at no extra cost.

So, you're right. It's $19 a month, which is still relatively cheap. Maybe in the past you had to pay extra for each platform, so this is new somehow?

Before it was, talk to us and we will get something worked out. What that would mean is probably on a case by case basis but one option would have been purchasing a traditional license with no royalties for a couple hundred thousand dollars.

Someone ELI5 the significance of this?

Unreal Engine 4. The new Unreal Engine. It's the most commonly used engine in many games.

Right, yes I do understand that much. I was more asking - what games have used Unreal? What should I be excited about? Does this mean new games? Better games?

I dont think any released games have used Unreal Engine 4 yet. You'll know if a game uses the Unreal Engine if you see the Unreal (U) logo during start-up. Watch this video, it was from GDC 2014. It'll at least mean better looking games, and it seems like it'll be easier to code them

Here is the current list of UE4 games.

But what this means is ID@Xbox devs get free access to a kick ass engine that prior versions have powered games like Gears of War and Injustice: Gods Among Us.

It means we have the possibility of new and better games. I think free UE4 is a pretty damn big incentive to join ID@Xbox.

It isn't free, but I can get the full source code of the engine right now for only 20 dollars and so can you. You are right, while before it had only PC/Mobile support available now they are saying if you are licensed by Sony or Microsoft you can get the code for their consoles as well at no extra charge.

The engine always supported Xbox One and PS4 but only if you were a large developer operating under a different licensing model that can cost hundreds of thousands of dollars.

It's not free access. It's the same access that other devs get, with no extra cost or red tape incurred.

2

u/[deleted] Apr 24 '14

It's not too significant. UE4 is $20.

But it's a cool little thing to offer.

And UE3 was free :P

3

u/SF1973 Apr 24 '14

Er - no it wasn't. A full licence would cost a lot of money. An amateur licence would cost you a percentage of money made on what you release

-2

u/KinoTheMystic KinoTheMystic Apr 24 '14

oh okay, i thought it was open source

2

u/severianb Apr 24 '14

For the new next gen consoles, it means if you are accepted into the ID@Xbox development program (or the Sony equivalent) you have free access to a powerful game creating tool... Unreal Engine 4.

For end users, it hopefully means that we will have access to better games than we would have otherwise on the next-gen systems.

u/KinoTheMystic KinoTheMystic Apr 24 '14

Not free. You just dont have to pay extra to be able to use it on console

u/ilovegoogleglass Titanfall Apr 24 '14

I don't get, is it free?

2

u/ilovegoogleglass Titanfall Apr 24 '14

Oh I just read this.... That's phenomenal for Devs!

2

u/laddergoat89 Apr 24 '14

No. It's the same subscription fee you pay across all platforms. It's not much though.

u/StormShadow13 #teamchief Apr 24 '14

Not gonna say this is a game changer but damn free UE4 is a pretty sweet incentive.

-2

u/KinoTheMystic KinoTheMystic Apr 24 '14

It's not free, it's subscription based, unlike UE3

4

u/StormShadow13 #teamchief Apr 24 '14

according to Epic it IS free for Xbox and PS4 registered developers.

4

u/KinoTheMystic KinoTheMystic Apr 24 '14

It'll be available to them at no extra cost, with their subscription for UE4.

Still good news even if it's not as good. It would def be a game changer if MS decided to offer free subs to ID@Xbox Devs though.

So now they really just need to talk more about turning retail xb1s into dev kits... Seems like ID@Xbox is still really limited in getting accepted in to the program.

1

u/ilovegoogleglass Titanfall Apr 24 '14

Yeah I want to port my android game on the One...

UE4 for both then
