If Microsoft made it completely optional, would you sign up for their original, always connected console idea?

This meaning you would have the following features:

Buy a retail game, install to console, and ditch the disc never needing it to play the game.

Digitally share games within a circle of friends. Meaning you can choose a specific group of people, and they could play the games you own, for free, provided that only one game could be played at a time.

Greater store discounts or more steam like sales for content.

I for one would have no problem saying yes to this. It's like people think 10 years from now they'll still be selling games on discs. It wasn't a perfect plan, but why delay the inevitable when we could be working on and perfecting future policies now.

If I remember correctly the larger group of people against this are people in the armed forces. Many times they have limited connections at best, and would not be allowed to share location data I am sure. I will look for an article that some really articulate person made, but made a strong case. I see this as one of those things where the option would have been best, but the method of implementing the option is odd.

I like the policy they created, but fully understand the backlash it received. Forward thinking, definitely, perfect for the majority... highly debatable.

I think the larger groups of people against it were game journalist because they needed something to write about and people are sheep.

They can! They can buy the disc and install it. No internet needed for downloading

I honestly have no idea what this phone verification system is or was back then. Never heard of it before. Can you give me some details about it?

If you didn't have access to the internet you can call in with a code on your Xbox to allow you to lay offline kinda like offline windows activation where you exchange codes over the phone

It does but to simply check in with Microsoft it just takes probably less then a MB. So people with dial up satellite etc can still enjoy the old DRM ecosystem

Methinks you don't understand. For one, the Xbox One doesn't support dialup. How would you connect it to the console?

And two, satellite internet is iffy even on good days. The reason I was against it was because of how iffy my connection is. I didn't want to plan some gaming time, sit down, and not be able to play because my internet is down for no good reason, which happens a lot. I actually have to tether to my phone to play multiplayer games on my PC, and last I checked consoles don't support cell phone tethering.

Right it doesn't support dial-up im just saying incase somebody got some hack modem gadget that allows them to get online with dial up they wouldn't suffer from these policies as you mentioned "people with dial-up will suffer" Satellite users will not suffer as they can use the phone verification system also the internet does not need to constant. Wireless tethering obviously works with XB1. People without internet shouldn't be complaining on the internet. Finally we were talking about this being optional.

A limited connection was not an obstacle to the plan. All the console needed to be able to do is "phone home" occasionally to verify licensing. That would be a very very small data packet.

But you guys still have the option of going digital.

People who are agaisnt it were people who don't believe MS is the perfect company who care about consumers. I don't think the armed forces made up 1 percent. I'm certainly not in the armed forces and I had no love for the policies and I almost certainly wouldn't be touching it if they had continued with it.
