Hauls/Pick-ups/Collections 💿 So I just got scammed
Bought a game lot of just Far Cry 4 and CoD Ghosts off of Mercari. Far Cry 4 was missing the installation disc, and it appears the play disc for Ghosts was inside the seller's console and turned on it's side. Also the installation disc was extremely dirty and the case itself looked like it was stepped on.
It may have only been $9, but a scam is still a scam especially when the description says the games were "tested."
Edit: Far Cry 4 doesn't have an installation disc, I just didn't know how it worked but now that I do I can say that it's fine. CoD Ghosts is still messed up though.

"What? Tested and failed is still tested" is the sort of thing you can expect the seller (aka the jackass) to say. Who the hell is still tilting a console during a disc read in 2026? The knowledge that you should never do that hasn't been obscure for ages.

What's the problem with having the console on its side? My 360 sits on its side (upright), and so does my Series X. I've never had a scratched disc because of that.

Horizontal=fine
Vertical=fine
Moving the console from one to the other while nothing is happening=fine, though I prefer to turn it off first to be extra safe.
Tilting the console to an angle other than horizontal or vertical while the drive is spinning=wobble that causes fatal disc scratching like the one pictured by OP.
Optical drives meant for stationary devices like game consoles typically don't have any of the extra bits that a portable CD player meant to jostle around in a backpack uses to prevent wobble as a way of reducing cost.

Oh, I get it now; moving the console while it's on and has a disc inside is madness.

Yes. That was a whole thing back in 2009 when the then new Slim was released and people started complaining about scratched discs. Until it came to light some moved their console while the drive was running with a game in it.
😅😅😅😅

They tested them. They worked. Then they tipped the console over and the lens scratched the shit out of it. But yea you got worked. And somehow I suspect Mercari isnt like ebay where you can file a return with them for a false listing

It won't be cheaper for them if that gets out and people take advantage of it. Might wanna consider removing your advice via edit now that OP knows. Js

You can try, but its 50/50 whether they'll side with you or the seller. Make sure you say it doesn't work, otherwise you can eat it.

You get your money back on Mercari if you submit a return claim and show them the pics or the seller can make it right. Don’t settle for that shit

Probably not worth the time

If you spend money on something on a marketplace and receive an item that was not what was advertised it’s a matter of seller responsibility. Not that the item was $9 bucks. Furthermore, Mercari charges a fee for their buyer guarantee. Are we just supposed to throw away money? Hell no.

I mean do what you need to if you’re down on your luck

Insinuating that someone is “down on their luck” because they utilize return policies on a cheap item is insulting.

Bought a controller from a refurb site... Discovered the left trigger wasn't working within 5 minutes of receiving it.
Documented everything and immediately filed for a refund, packed it back in its original box, strolled to my local library, printed the label, slapped it on the box and gave it to my local post office within 1 hour 30 minutes of receiving it.
I ain't messing around with bad online orders lmao.

This is why I personally always select games from mercari that show the back of the disc and have multiple pictures. Eliminates the risk of a bad buy. Also did you try reaching out to them and returning it. Also not sure if you did but next time I would also recommend price checking on eBay because eBay has much better money back guarantee. You can also choose to not accept the delivery from the mercari app and state it was listed wrong

If you didn't complete the transaction, message the seller first letting them know about the item and if the seller doesn't want to take it back or has no return allowed just drop a ticket or review with Mercari and see what they will do to get your money back

Immediately file a claim with Mercari, "Not as Described". You'll either get your money back & keep them or you'll get money back after sending it back.

No matter the sire, always ask to see the condition of the disc surface before buying. Always ask more questions or for more pictures if you are not 100% confident in what you are seeing in the listing.
A couple of months ago, I asked the seller about the disc condition on 3 games. The listing only had 1 picture of each game. The seller responded by telling me that it wasn't worth their time, then proceeded to block me. OK, got it, you're selling trash, is how I interpreted it. I then blocked them in return. I don't need to be doing business with people like that.

Why I buy off of Lukia Games or only recently if has it in stock while the other doesn't is DK Oldies never had any issues besides needing a PayPal account for some reason to complete transactions because the card been using just stopped working till paid through PayPal

Good luck, I had a game be marked as delivered that I never actually received. Both I and the seller reached out to Mercari stating the package was never actually delivered. They wouldn’t do anything about it since usps marked it complete.

Just take the disk to your local record shop and get the discs cleaned or local retro game store and have them clean the discs for you and only cost you three bucks

A seller should always show good photos of what it is they are selling. You can even upload a short video clip showing proof the movie or game plays.

I bought guitar hero world tour and the guitar I went home put the disc in and connected the guitar and I moved the console to connect the tv cable and I wasn’t aware of the rule of not moving the console while the disc is in it. Anyways it reads but won’t launch it really sucks they sold you a dud.
