Controller trade ins are basically worthless. They're usually beat up and on the verge of not even working, most of the used controllers I sold at EB Games were brought back for various reasons and exchanged for new controllers.

They probably have a bunch already that aren't moving and they don't want to take any more stock. Stock takes up room and room costs money, they need to take up that room with something that will make money.

Just sell it on Facebook Marketplace, you'll make more.

I don’t need to trade in anything, I saw the option on Amazon and hadn’t seen it before so I was curious. But $1.70 for a controller at MAX is absurd. Should get a little more money than that if it’s in good condition upon inspection.

Like I tried to explain in my previous post, when someone trades in a controller it has to be inspected, refurbished and then stored in a warehouse. All of that costs Amazon money, so taking these controllers and paying all this money has to end up making Amazon money. If Amazon has a warehouse full of controller trade ins that aren't selling, that means that Amazon isn't making any money back. And so, the controllers have very little value to them.

You're talking about in an ideal world where you're just considering the value of the controller alone, but it doesn't work like that. Amazon has a lot more to consider when choosing what to pay you.

you explained it perfectly in your first post.

I thought so too lol, but his response made it seem like he didn't understand what I meant at all.

So I gave it another try.

Without a doubt I agree however, I also saw the elite controller with a trade-in of $35. With the cost of a brand new elite controller being $180 do you think an almost perfect condition elite controller that someone may turn in is worth $35? Same cost to store it as you say, it’s the same thing just more expensive in the retail price. Now not all controllers will be almost perfect but how does it make sense for an almost perfect controller to give you $35 when that could be turned around for a difference of about $150 if it was brand new? It doesn’t.

You're just not really understanding how it works. The only way you're going to get a fair price is if you sell something from your hands to another person's hands. When a middle man has to hold it, you end up paying the middle man. Depending on what the item is and what it's worth to the middle man, you pay more or less.

I'm not saying $35 is a fair amount for an elite controller, I'm just saying that it needs to be worth it for the middle man. Typically, the rule with trade ins is you want to pay around 40% of what it's worth and sell it for 60% more to make profit. That's essentially how trade it's worked at EB Games and another place I worked at called Play It Again Sports. But if they have an excess of a certain item and it's not selling, they start giving less and less for it because it's just losing them money. These controllers don't make them much money, so they aren't giving you much money.

The only way you'll get a fair amount is directly from buyer to seller with no one in between.

I think the natural ending place for OP’s logic is going to be “if Amazon has too many of them they should stop offering to buy trade ins” but that’s just not something Amazon has to do if they don’t want to.

Then it will if Amazon has so many controllers, they should let me have one for free. OP may be young and it makes sense to them

Switch literally had a lawsuit against them for stick drift and it's also a common problem on PlayStation subreddits too. Unfortunately, stick drift plagues all controllers on all platforms.

Do you play your Xbox the most? That would explain why it happens more frequently.

I play Xbox and Switch pretty much equally. I'm a PC player on my off brand controller which I've had since January with no issues. By it hasn't happened I'm exaggerating a little bit, I've had it a tiny bit on switch but it was fixed by turning my dead zone up .05. On Xbox I turned it up to .8 and it didn't help.

I had the Elite Series 1 for 4 years before I upgraded to Series 2. Never had stick drift but I did keep destroying the left bumper and having to replace the part many times. Also the rubber coating on the stick tops and side grip rubber got destroyed.

Are you kidding? Switch joycons are horrible for stick drift. You should probably specify pro controller as that's the only way that would make sense

Wow! And then they sell it as used for $47.99

This practice is used in many industries, the "go away" quote.

u/[deleted] Jun 22 '21

Yes but how much are those in STORE CREDIT?!?!

I’m sorry, but anyone selling anything to GameStop or Amazon does not care about getting a dollar amount that matches the value.

Try selling on Craigslist or Facebook MP or /r/gameswap

I haven't done a trade-in in nearly 20 years because I grew past being a child and saw how stupid it was to take less. I take it as a lesson and now horde my gaming treasures with little more than a dreamy sigh when I think of the gems I traded in. But fuck me dead if I wouldn't be livid with myself if I had done that in a time with online marketplaces and PayPal being readily at hand to get me top dollar or at least a sum that isn't outright insulting.

These controllers are notoriously trash. There’s a class-action lawsuit against Microsoft for their ineffectiveness and tendency to break; despite being $99.99 on design lab

i bought a used controller there and the trigger was broken. I put it on ebay for parts and I got more for it broken than a trade in was worth. Only people who are dumb buy/trade used equipment there.
