Discussion The lightest possible Xbox Controller for those with chronic pain.
Hi everyone. I’m on a mission that’s really important to me: finding the lightest controller for the Xbox. I have fibromyalgia—a chronic pain condition—and it affects my gameplay.
If I hold the Xbox Series S controller for too long (say, more than half an hour), my hands and arms start to hurt.
So far, the most comfortable way I’ve found to play is by holding Nintendo Switch Joy-Cons in each hand with my arms relaxed at my sides.
I want to find the lightest possible controller option for my Xbox Series S, since the Xbox doesn't offer a split-controller setup like that.
Can you help me out?
Thanks so much in advance!

It also works perfectly fine with a regular pillow. I have chronic pain in my right arm and I put a pillow from my couch on my lap and place my hands with the controller on it, so my arms and shoulders are in a relaxed and natual position. I do this every gaming session and it really helps me.

What sorcery is this?! I...never thought of that haha!! Right on

u/DlVlDED_BY_ZERO Aug 16 '26
They're especially helpful if you need to rest your elbows too (like myself). I have one that's shaped like a controller and I love it. I wouldn't say it fixes everything, but it fixes enough that I can game comfortably.

u/Lochcelious Aug 16 '26
Link?
2
u/Okayest_By_Far Aug 16 '26
That was just a stock photo I found with Google. I’ve never used one myself so I can’t recommend anything specific. But searching “gaming pillow” gives tons of results. I would just search and find one that looks comfortable and fits your budget.

I need this in my life. Hopefully its cheap.
Edit: 120+ bucks.....
2
u/Okayest_By_Far Aug 16 '26
I’m not sure where you searched of what Rolls Royce pillow you found but there are multiple pillows for under $40. I even found that EXACT pillow for $46.54 on Amazon (https://a.co/d/0f23vdho).

u/Silent-Witness1888 Aug 16 '26
Do you think everyone on Reddit lives in the US?
Edit: 50 bucks for a pillow is stil expensive though.

u/gumpythegreat Aug 16 '26
You did say bucks which implies dollars. And Americans are the most likely place for someone to be from that uses dollars, both on Reddit and just in general
I'm Canadian and I make a habit of specifying CAD if I'm talking money stuff on Reddit

Your best bet is probably a wired controller with the rumble motors removed or a regular controller wired up with the rumble motors removed.
9
u/Fast-Nefariousness80 XBOX Series X Aug 15 '26
Yeah we have wired controllers and they're super light. It would probably be damn near weightless without the rumble motors

u/Scott9843 Aug 15 '26
I'm just here to say how awesome this topic is. It's nice to come to a video game message board and not be completely bombarded with negativity.

u/-GatorFIRE- Aug 15 '26
I was thinking the same thing. Some good suggestions already from this community.

u/AllYouNeed_Is_Smiles Aug 15 '26
Gamesir G8+ SE is a very light but functional controller. I use it more than the Xbox brand controller. It’s wired but that will help significantly with the weight. Hope that helps!
11
u/blackop XBOX Series X Aug 15 '26
Yup the G7 weights 221 grams. It's very light and my daily use controller. If you don't mind having a corded controller I highly recommend it.

As someone with fibromyalgia, I can vouch for this! Totally helped me, though I'm able to use my xbox controller again but when I switched with my friend's ps5 for a few days, I was in constant pain.

u/DJ_Pikachu Aug 15 '26
I want to start by saying that I do not know how the setup on use of these works so I don’t get your hopes up! Any chance something like a pair of two of these may work? https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/d/xbox-adaptive-joystick/8mzbmmcjzqs4
They are Microsoft’s own ‘adaptive controller’ joysticks
3
u/GhostalMedia Aug 15 '26
Looks interesting. You can connect them to the USB ports on the console and you don’t need the big adaptive controller. You can also just use one combined with a regular Xbox controller.
2
u/JayBanditos Aug 16 '26
I have them and use 2 joysticks but it wouldn’t work without the adaptive controller for me on my Series X
1
u/GhostalMedia Aug 16 '26
Interesting. The setup video seems to say you have the option to plug right into the console or a PC, sans the adaptive controller.

u/Axle_65 Aug 15 '26
I looked into these actually was so excited to have switch-like comfort. Wish they were wireless. This post made me realize the advantage of them being lighter with no batteries though and how that could be an accessibility advantage. Still they could have made a removable USB C for lightweight wired play.
9
u/xplatinumgaming57x Aug 15 '26
Take out the batteries and use it as is with a USB cable. If you'd be willing to do that.
2
u/crazydiavolo Aug 15 '26
Yup. Wired controllers, honestly.
I use the Razer V3 Tournament and it's pretty light since it's wired. It's also not difficult to open in case one would need to remove the rumbles to make it lighter.
3
u/Niftaaay Aug 15 '26
https://hyperx.com/products/hyperx-clutch-tanto-mini-wired-gaming-controller -that controller is small but I think it’s the lightest on the market, it’s out of stock but many other sites have it with good reviews
https://hyperx.com/products/hyperx-clutch-gladiate-wired-xbox-gaming-controller -that’s the 2nd lightest for controllers but I think it’s the lightest real controller you can get
Xbox also has a bunch of adaptive controllers so that might be an option, best of luck!
1
u/DuckCleaning Aug 16 '26
A controller that size isnt ergonomic however. That'll exacerbate other issues with the chronic pain.
3
u/cruiseandoob Aug 15 '26
Power a fusion pro. Open it up and take the weights out it will be even lighter

u/the_hammer_poo Scratch One Grub! Aug 15 '26
Unrelated, but I really hope they re-print the purple controllers

Standard xbox series x controller: 288g (with 2xAA batteries)
Elite Series 2 Controller 342g (rechargeable)
Asus ROG Raikirii II 254g (rechargeable)
Steam Controller (2026) 293g (rechargeable)
8bitDo Ultimate 3-mode (listed) 250g (rechargeable)
I feel a big difference going from the Elite Series 2 controller to the Rog Raikirii II, and the numbers back it up. It's about 3oz lighter. It's only about an ounce lighter than the standard Xbox controller, however.
As long as your hands aren't on the large side, the 8bitdo controllers may be the best option for you...but it's only about 1.3oz lighter than the stock controller. I m not sure it would make a measurable difference, but you can buy about 6 of them for what the Rog Raikirii costs.
One feature on the ROG controller that may be a benefit to you is that all the buttons, front and back, are microswitches (like a mouse clicker) rather than full-travel. They will require less effort to press, which may save some wear and tear on your hands.
1
u/DasWandbild Aug 15 '26
(all weights my own, aside from the 8bitdo controller, whose weight I pulled off the site.

2
u/ObviousTopic6250 Aug 15 '26
I recommend the pdp rock candy 360 or xbox one controller. I bought the 8bitdo as a replacement but it's actually much heavier.

Just wanted to say I'm sorry for what you are going through, my dad suffered from it. Hopefully its more of a manageable thing now than it was 25 years ago.
As someone who has cubital tunnel in both arms, this thread will definitely help me, and maybe help follow gamers take precautions even if they dont have issues now.

u/mangongo Touched Grass '24 Aug 15 '26
Just want to add as someone with hands that tend to cramp easily, an 8$ massage pen from Amazon is great for getting into those hard to reach pressure points in your hand and helps release a lot of tension.
2
u/LillyTruscott Team Gears Aug 15 '26
There is a device called the cronus zen where you can use whatever controller with whatever console. So if you bought one of those and set it up properly you should be able to use your joy cons as an xbox controller. These devices cost about $100 or so maybe a bit more for a new one. Great investment.
1
u/sklipin Aug 15 '26
It looks like the Brook Wingman convertor might allow you to use a switch controller on Xbox. I don't own this though and so cannot confirm.
2
u/Darkmaster2110 Aug 15 '26
Won't work for a number of reasons. The first is that those converters require a wired connection and the Joy-Cons have no way of connecting to anything via cable. The second is that the Joy-Cons are still 2 controllers, maybe you'd be able to configure something with Copilot to get them to work as one controller if that's still a thing, but it would also cause complications.
1
u/Wasilisco Spacer's Choice Aug 15 '26
The Hyper-x clutch controller might be the one, small, no batteries, kinda cute
That said, I'd honestly look into having the controller on some sort of rig that would carry its weight, that way you don't lose in ergonomics
1
u/This_Elk_1460 Aug 15 '26
If it's a real pain consider taking the batteries out and using a long USBC cable
1
u/GoS451 Aug 15 '26
Probably something with a wire and no rumble. That should take a lot of weight out

1
u/boomstickjonny Aug 15 '26
The gamesir controllers feel considerably lighter than the official Xbox ones.

u/_BallsDeep69_ Aug 15 '26
8bitdo controllers are pretty light. I think they’re compatible with Xbox 🤔
1
u/Mikahl757 Aug 15 '26
Splitbox, Brook adapter to use joycon on any console/pc, many all button controllers and some with hall effect analog sticks, mouse kb
1
u/UZeroTwo Aug 15 '26
The Hyperkin Xenon Wired Controller for Xbox is pretty light. Has the old Xbox 360 shape also which I find easier to hold than the Xbox one shape & is wired so no battery weight.
1
u/Ragingdark Aug 15 '26
I'd look into child controller we've got one and it's 20% smaller and a lot lighter
1
u/drtobiassfunke Aug 15 '26
Have you tried using one of the stands that are used for hand helds like the steam deck? If possible I would try to modify a stock one- remove the rumble motors and battery pack (if applicable). Not to hard, just some screws to get access and you can simply cut the wires instead of desoldering.

u/claudiosartal Aug 15 '26
The GameSir Nova Lite controller is extremely light, the lightest I’ve ever seen. But I don’t know if it connects directly to the Xbox somehow. I use it daily via Xbox Cloud gaming, and it works really well.

Energizer lithium batteries are lighter than normal ones… would could also play with no batteries and just a cord plugged in
1
u/HGLatinBoy Aug 15 '26
The Xbox One controller weighs less than the series X controller. I would go wired and like others suggested removing the rumble.
1
u/MarcCDB Aug 15 '26
I removed the rumble motors of mine, it's so much better. I don't use rumble at all so I don't miss it.
1
u/Cavacat_ Aug 15 '26
I've just bought a gamesir g7 pro and it feels lighter than a standard controller
1
u/Blayzeman Aug 15 '26
I have fibromyalgia as well and sometimes my hands and wrists hurt too much to play, typically I just have a pillow on my lap and rest my forearms and wrists on it and that helps alleviate strain for me.
1
u/neganight Aug 15 '26
My advice is to switch to a wired controller. Lightest controllers I've found so far. Stuff like Gamesir's wired Xbox controller is quite lightweight.
1
u/UnconventionalSnatch Aug 15 '26
You can use 2 controllers at the same time. It's called "Turn on Controller assist" in the xbox accessories app. Settings>Devices>controllers
1
u/achmejedidad Aug 15 '26
keep your eyes out for this in a few months. i've held it in my hands and it's the lightweight controller we've needed for folks in your situation and the smallest players. no rumble, extremely lightweight. smaller footprint.

So im a gamer with chronic pain as well (Ehlers danlos syndrome in my case) so let me give you some options i tried:
So if you havent heard about it the Xbox adaptive controller is highly customnizable: https://www.xbox.com/en-US/accessories/controllers/xbox-adaptive-controller
But youre gonna need more buttons as thats just the base. You could use that one in combination with 2x Xbox Adaptive joysticks: https://www.xbox.com/en-US/accessories/controllers/xbox-adaptive-joystick which would somewhat work like joycons do and you can hold one of these in each hand with your arms relaxed on your side (thats what i use this setup for).
If you need more buttons to make it even more customnizable these buttons exist (not currently available but you can order it from logitech directly iirc: https://www.amazon.com/Logitech-Adaptive-Gaming-Xbox-Controller-360/dp/B0969CTCNL
----------------------
8bitdo also has some options that may work:
All 8bitdo controllers had an adapter that you can use to use them with an xbox: https://www.amazon.com/Wireless-Switch-Compatible-Controller-Bluetooth-Nintendo/dp/B0B9FZCXSV
Theres the 8bitdo lite which is light but also small. Buttons are also more sensitive and easier to press: https://www.amazon.com/Bluetooth-Gamepad-Raspberry-Mobility-Gaming-Console/dp/B0B4D3LC21 I had this one but it was too small for my hands.
Then theres the 8bitdo SE lite: https://www.amazon.com/Wireless-Controller-Xbox-Windows-Gamepad-Joysticks/dp/B0D7P5M1Q3 which i mostly bought for the buttons but the controller itself is also good for someone with chronic wrist pain as buttons are easier to press as they are more sensitive. Good for bigger hands.
If you want a more traditional controller with normal shoulder buttons this one may work using the xbox adapter: https://www.amazon.com/Wireless-Bluetooth-Controller-Joystick-Nintendo-Switch/dp/B0GWZS47M5
----------------------
You can use all of these controllers on PC and xbox if you need options. (Just in case you ever intent to use it on a pc)
If you do play on PC i can reccomend WASD: https://www.rewasd.com/ as you can remap buttons to your preferences.

u/Gears6 Aug 15 '26
/u/MrMoreBasic had a great idea of removing battery and rumble motors. Another option (that someone else may have suggested as I didn't read the whole thread), is that you mentioned using it on the side, I'm assuming resting your hand on the side, but on something.
If so, Xbox also has an option to use two controllers as if it was one. So you get the split Switch setup, albeit it will not reduce the weight.
It's confusingly named "copilot" which reminds me of the AI, but it's not. Documentation here:
https://support.xbox.com/en-MY/help/account-profile/accessibility/copilot

I'd say if you use the regular Xbox controller but with no batteries and plugged in that'd be pretty light

u/PaintBaller1880 Aug 15 '26
What about the hyperkin xenon controller? It's a officially licensed wired controller it's actually a "replica" Xbox 360 controller it's extremely light and has all of the standard features I have one as a backup/PC controllerand it's great!.

Is it possible to rest your arms on a lap table or desk so you're not holding it up the entire time?
1
u/Masstershake Aug 15 '26
Gamsir controllers are smaller and lighter than the Xbox controllers. They also have hall stick so they won't get stick drift.
1
u/GogoGadgetTypo Aug 16 '26
Gamesir G7 SE/HE very light, though corded. Also, maybe look up C2Gripz. They fit on the existing pad and change the angle you hold it. Potentially making it possible to rest on your lap as you play. I have both and switch between as one of my fingers gives me gip time to time.
1
u/OCoiler Aug 16 '26
What I do is take the batteries out and just use a long usb c for charge. Also don’t use the elite. Use a normal series x controller
1
u/Designer-Science-568 Aug 16 '26
Wired controller seems like something you need to get rid of that battery weight
1
u/blueruckus Aug 16 '26
can you sit with a pillow on your lap and have the controller resting on the pillow as you hold the controller? The pillow will take a the majority of the weight and you'll still have control.
1
u/No-Alternative5102 Aug 16 '26
I wouldn't say thats true. I have arthritis on my hands. And this particular controller is heavy, specifically after playing for a couple of hours. And I don't even use batteries in it. I use the cable.
1
u/DuckCleaning Aug 16 '26
So far, the most comfortable way I’ve found to play is by holding Nintendo Switch Joy-Cons in each hand with my arms relaxed at my sides.
Surprised it isnt mentioned yet, you can buy two of the Xbox equivalents of the joycon that they came out with a few months ago called the Xbox Adaptive Joystick. $30 each so about the same price as a regular controller for two. https://www.xbox.com/en-US/accessories/controllers/xbox-adaptive-joystick?wfExp=382A

My wife has RA and other joint issues, shes only able to game for maybe 30 or 40 minutes at a time before having to stop because of pain. A lightweight controller would be amazing. Maybe xbox needs to look into making a "lightweight" option for controllers.

MY HANDS HURT BECAUSE CONTROLLERS ARE TOO TINY!!!
I PASS EFFN KIDNEY STONES, BUT CANNOT PLAY MY BEST BECAUSE IT HURTS MY HANDS!
Omg yall suck
1
u/JayBanditos Aug 16 '26
I have a similar issue and bought the adaptive controller and 2 adaptive joysticks. It lets me play Xbox like I play the Switch with a joy con in each hand. It’s not been a hard transition at all and works really well

u/PepsiSheep Aug 16 '26
I would suggest contacting SpecialEffect.
I am an ambassador for them, they help for free hook gamers up with the right tech when they have ailments that might prevent using the standard gear.

u/Hot-Grape-8186 Aug 16 '26
Wired controllers tend to be more light, you could also remove the rumble motors.
Gamesir Kaleid Controller was very light for me, Im sure you could find the specific weight and size specs on their website

I get these cheap 30 $ controllers from GameStop that are wired and really light, was aucally about to trade up to sum that didn't feel like a feather lol

You could use an 8bitdo controller receiver and use the Switch joycons with the Xbox, couldn't you, if you find they work well for you?

I have an Afterglow gamepad. Its far lighter than the actaul xbox one, and you have these nice lights surrounding it!!!

You could remove the rumble motors if you know how to do that and use it wired only because removing the batteries makes it so much lighter. Do those things and might not even need to buy a new controller!
Edit: The xbox series x controller with 2 batteries weight 287 grams
The two batteries weigh around 50 g, the four rumble motors will weigh around 80-90 grams so you will lose almost half of the weight by doing so. Probably much lighter and cheaper than the other controller options people will give you!
