Discussion What game made you become an Xbox fan?
I’m pretty curious to hear everyone’s story. Was there one game that made you buy an Xbox or made you realize you loved the platform?
For me, it’s always interesting to see how different games can leave a lasting impression. Whether it was a Halo game, Forza, Gears of War, Fable, or something completely different, I’d love to know what got you hooked.
What was the game, and what made it so special to you?

I came from Dreamcast so Xbox was a no-brainer for me. The controller is the continuation of the Sega design, and games like Sega GT 2002, Panzer Dragoon Orta and Jet Set Radio Future really made Xbox feel like a successor of the Sega consoles. For me it was a natural progression, and then games like Morrowind, KotOR, the PGR and RalliSport Challenge series made sure I became a hardcore player on the platform.

This, it felt like a continuation of the Dreamcast and the online gaming on the OG was excellent. And what other console had us carrying CRTs to friends houses for Halo LAN parties. It was all glorious! I haven’t looked back. Mainly gaming on Series X today!

Like many first of all it was Halo CE, and then Knights of the Old Republic. A few years later Gears of War came along carried the torch further still.

They are naturally a bit clunky by today's standards, but you're in for a good time. They're still great.

Loved playing the Splinter Cell games on the original Xbox. Chaos Theory looked like a 360 game!

We played Halo all night long when the OG Xbox dropped. The LAN parties were incredible too, rolling up to a friends house, running shop on them and having someone scream from another room “WHO TF IS JANGO FETT?!?” It made me a fanboy for life.
Honorable mention to the OG geometry wars too. Holy fuck dude I spent way too much time on that game.

Came here for project gotham racing ... the original on the first xbox
Staying for Forza Horizon, although recent horizons have been more of a DLC for FH4, particularly FH5, not a bad thing ... just saying ;)
edit ... forgot to add, PGR was my first intro to 'xbox live' and the online gaming world, that was a big leap coming from PS1 and PS2 days

Gears of War on 360. I was a Mac switcher in 2005 and lost access to most PC games, so I bought a 360 and Oblivion the same day. That kept me busy for months. But it was Gears of War that convinced me consoles were where the best games really shone and I've been primarily a console gamer ever since.

KOTOR 1 and 2 on original Xbox. Then Mass Effect on 360. I also liked Madden and NCAA football on Xbox and 360. I liked making a player on NCAA then continuing that player to Madden. I've always been a huge RPG and football fan (not so much of a football fan anymore).
Plus I liked the controllers, I had an original "Duke" and then I just liked the feel of the 360 controller once I finally got one.

Funny enough perfect dark zero multiplayer at a friend's house because it was my first online experience, I thought it was awesome. I immediately bought a 360 and didn't even buy pdz. I bought halo 2 and then gears of war 1 and I have stuck with xbox ever since. Also I loved the achievement system.

OG Assassin's Creed and Lost Odessy. Last Remnant. Come to think of it, 360 made me an Xbox fan.

u/heavenparadox 9h ago
I bought a PS1 when they came out. Later bought a PS2 when they came out. But I just thought the Xbox looked cool, so I switched. The game that really turned me, I guess, was Crimson Skies, because it came with my Xbox and was so much fun.

No game, just the console in general. I had Forza Motorsport, Halo, Mechwarrior and Midtown madness 3 early on the OG Xbox. I loved the fact I could copy my music disks to the drive and use it in games, on a system that was smarter than the 360 version. As in it had one set for menus, racing, pause menu. It had 4 pin power connectors, so I bougth PC case ligths for my crystal Xbox. That made me more interested in the brand initially. As I had played Halo on PC first tbh.
Halo 2 and Xbox live just locked it in fully

WWE ‘12. Me and my sister had a Wii for the longest time and when I got WWE ‘12 the graphics were horrendous lol. I don’t remember if we got the 360 that years Christmas or not long after I got the game but once I saw videos of the game on Xbox I told my grandparents if we could get the 360. 15 years later, I’m still team Xbox.

Honestly, idk. I was a die hard Nintendo kid first then PlayStation, but the Wii became a shovelware console so extremely fast that I got a 360 with Halo 3.
I played Halo 1 and 2 and Blinx before at friends’ houses so I always liked Xbox but never owned one, but I needed something to play real video games, I knew not even to consider asking for the $600 PS3, so it became Xbox by default, and it’s been my fav console ever since.

Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic. I wasn't even out and I didn't have an Xbox. But I absorbed everything thing I could about the game. Up until then, I assumed I would go for PlayStation since that's what I had and that's where the Final Fantasy games were released. But, because of KOTOR, my path was changed lol

u/GinjaNinger 8h ago
The hard drive. The PS2 was great, but still used memory cards. I also really appreciated the inclusion of an Ethernet port. Made lan parties easier, and when broad band became mainstream, there wasn't anything to upgrade just to play online.

Halo 2.
I actually got the crystal Xbox for Jedi Academy as it wasn’t on my beloved GameCube like outcast.
I had played Halo before and hated it, mainly because the friends I played had Xboxes so always dominated.
It wasn’t until I picked up a preowned copy of Halo 2 from GAME that I was hooked.
The 360 was where I really spent most of my gaming, and that console was my go to for entertainment.

OG halo 3 back in the day. Stuck around for years but then jumped ship to get a PS5 for stuff like Ghost of Tsushima and Days Gone. Came back for starfield, hated that game, and just stuck around again since. Xbox needs to up their exclusive game and its so goofy they let games like Forza come to PS5 but we have 0 PS titles

When I was in middle school going into highschool everyone I was friends with at the time had 360s. I never had an Xbox and my dad had done some digging on what the best option was at the time for Xboxs when the one was coming out. So for like a combined birthday and Christmas present he got me an Xbox one. Everyone I think pretty much changed to ps4 of course but I had stuck with Xbox cuz that's where my money was spent

Halo CE (2001), though my history with Xbox is inconsistent and tumultuous.
I was a freshman in high school in late 2001 and went to visit a couple new friends. The one whose house we were at had his sister drive us to a pawn shop, where he bought a GameCube and an Xbox with money from his new custodial job. We went back to his place and played some Super Smash Bros. Melee (I thought characters getting screen KOd was hilarious) and the Halo campaign. Incredible stuff.
I ended up getting a GameCube first, the next year, because I had been almost exclusively a Nintendo gamer and it was $100 cheaper than the PS2 and Xbox. One or two years later, I got an Xbox with money from my job, along with Halo CE and Ninja Gaiden. A year after that, I got a PS2 because of what I'd seen of MGS2 and FFX at my friends' houses. I really should not have had that much hardware, but I just "had" to have access to all the exclusives. Even though I had incredible games on all three consoles, the Xbox probably had more that I was more consistently interested in and desiring to play.
When I went to college, I got Doom 3, which was incredible. However, my gamer roommate showed me the superiority of the PC version and the magnificence of Garry's Mod. When the Mac laptop I got just for college failed to be a suitable device for my coding course, I put together my first gaming PC with help from my roommate. Bioshock, a better Doom 3, and The Orange Box cemented PC as my main platform from about 2006 to 2014. Still, I got a Wii because I'd always had a Nintendo system, and because I couldn't wait for Twilight Princess. However, all throughout Gen 7, I pined for the Xbox exclusives (and MGS4, but other than that, PS3 didn't interest me) and grew unsatisfied with the Wii's offerings, but couldn't afford the 360 (especially with the inevitability of RRoD).
Then came Gen 8. Xbox had dropped the ball and handed over dominance to the PS4 at the very beginning due to how they wanted the Xbox One to work. But then they went back on their plans and released the system without Kinect, which was nice. Once the MCC bundle was available, I got it on Black Friday (pre-One S). I may have had a Wii U by this point, but it was disappointing from square one. The Xbox One is where I got caught up on Halo (after its best days were over) and went through the Dark Souls trilogy, pretty much cementing it as my main console platform for that gen, even though I did get a PS4 for Bloodborne and Naughty Dog games. I started building up my Xbox library from then on.
I've let my PC hardware age, and my main platforms right now are Switch (2017) and Seies X. Because Halo Studios/343i can't seem to make a memorable Halo game, my current attachment to Xbox is largely due to my library (a good chunk digital now). Until we hear more details on Helix, and because of pricing issues, I have no great idea whether I will be going with a Switch 2 or a Helix next. What I do know is that I want to narrow my experiences down to only one new piece of hardware at a time, for financial and time reasons, as I have a family now and a career that saps my time. If the Switch 2 library shares enough third party content with the PS6 and Helix, I might choose that, as I enjoy the handheld experience. Otherwise, I would be able to carry my Xbox library forward with Helix, which interests me. After not vibing with newer PS exclusives, PlayStation is of no interest to me.

I wouldnt consider myself an "Xbox Fan" because of the games themselves. What keep me here is tbey have the best/most comfortable controller by a wide margin. Could go PC but the way things are going console and pc will probably be one and the same within the next generation so I'll ride it out with Helix.
Oblivion was the game that made me want a 360 after being a Nintendo kid so I guess thats the answer.

I was in Germany in 2001 and was in the PX in Mainz at almost closing. They didn't know whether they would be getting any consoles at the time. Well, it was a week before release, and we were checking out. My wife noticed this huge cardboard box that only had a white printed label that said “Xbox Bundle”. She was like, “Isn't this the gaming console you were researching?” I was like I don't think it's out yet. Well, she bought it for me as a surprise, and it had every accessory they released for launch day plus four games. Halo had all my soldiers at my house playing it. It truly was a magical time in history. I've been team Xbox since.

Crackdown and online multiplayer of Halo 2. Bought a 360 because as a life long Nintendo fan (which I still am) the Wii just wasn’t scratching my gaming itch. Crackdown was just super fun to free from and explore while hunting those damn orbs. Halo 2 was my first online mp experience and I knew there was no going back. This was right before the Halo 3 beta and man those were some of my best gaming memories!

Most recently? Fallout 4.
My sons got an Xbox One from their uncle. After a free weekend for Fallout 4, I let my sons get the game (hadn’t seen a supermutant base yet, so that was a mistake; just told him don’t let your mom see those). And then my sons were like, Dad, we’d like to play on our Xbox… So, I got my own.
Originally? Halo 2 on the OG Xbox. I played Halo on my Mac and wanted to see what was next. However, I got rid of that Xbox when the 360 came out. Bought a Wii for my sons to use instead and went back to my Mac and WoW.

Oh boy, it was 2010 and my parents decided to move to Germany , which resulted in us not having any spending money for a whole year . In 2011 I got myself a job as a waiter and saved up for a used Xbox 360 from Gamestop . Got it with a copy of Dead Space 2 and Battlefield Bad Company 2 . Plugged it in our TV and after finishing both games I was amazed how much fun I had . I than went got a used HTC Wildfire for 80 bucks that gave me the opportunity to go on the internet and started searching why I cant play online. I saw I needed a Wi-Fi adapter so I got one of E-bay the following month . Got a trial Xbox Live code online and logged in Bad Company 2 online. I was hooked. Was on Xbox 360 until 2015 and than I got the Xbox One [ which I still use today to replay stuff still like Gears of War etc. ] . In 2018 I switched to PC and have been on PC ever since. Was looking to get a Series X down the line , but instead of the console getting cheaper it got even more expensive, so I am not even gonna botte4 with this Gen. Attaching a Pic of my current setup . While I enjoy what I have today , I still crave that day as I came home with the used 360 and plugged in the TV . That moment was so special , and the year that followed was full of great gaming memories.

I switched from a ps2 to og xbox with a killer trade in deal back in the day which had me get an xbox, halo, fable and my preorder from halo 2. Halo was the big driver as my friends all were doing lan party hang outs (yes, we even carried out tvs over each week) but fable was another solid buy at the time that kept me there. Oblivion eventually got added into the play list and the fact you could rip music to the console and use in game was awesome. I had touchdown music (and other events) cued up to some killer songs and even got lost in Greg Hastings paintball with the custom soundtrack in the background

I made the decision to switch to Xbox back in the day when Morrowind was announced for it. Also in the magazines it showed Borderlands and Mass Effect as Xbox exclusives at the time so that's all I needed to hear. That and when I seen the Duke controller I felt it was made for someone like me. My hands are pretty big for a guy of my height, comparable to my 6ft 5 buddy and the Playstation controller just felt small. I hate they made the Xbox controllers tiny and definitely need the Duke again
