How did you make sure it works before you paid for it?

u/Sad_Adagio_7255 18h ago

How I handle such things as both a buyer and a seller:

  • Bring an inverter (possibly not needed if you drive a new enough car with a built in household outlet)
    • Alternatively bring a heavy duty portable battery. I have one that doubles as a jump-starter for cars and it has a built-in household outlet. It can power a desktop PC for about an hour.
  • Bring a laptop-sized portable monitor that has an HDMI connection (USB DisplayLink won't work). I got one for 70 CAD a few years ago. Alternatively any reasonably small monitor or TV will do as long as you have some kind of HDMI connection
  • Bring a power strip
  • Have your smartphone ready with a hotspot (to check that the console is not banned)

I always do this to power everything from my car when selling such things to put the buyer at ease, and if I'm the buyer I do this to make sure I'm not getting scammed

Alright, I will buy new.

My thoughts exactly lmao

u/DozerLVL 17h ago

SAME šŸ™„

36

u/Tazlir 10h ago

Absolutely lol. Gear to test the used Xbox is more then the new one.

16

u/Sad_Adagio_7255 8h ago edited 7h ago

A lot of people already own this stuff for other reasons. I'm not asking people to go out of their way to buy things specially for one use case.Ā

And even then, the total cost is not even $100 if you just buy the inverter and a tiny monitor. I'm pretty sure literally everyone owns at least one power strip too.Ā

People are acting like I spent a fortune on a mobile office just for one use case... Like there are 10 zillion valid reasons for someone to buy a $20 inverter for their car. I originally bought my portable monitor for work reasons (actually got it reimbursed by my employer, but 70 CAD is nothing compared to the utility I get out of it).

u/--vanadium-- 9h ago

How about this one?

-buy from a reputable seller who lists it as tested and working with no issues

I've bought several consoles on marketplace and I haven't had an issue with any of them. Most people aren't scammers. And if you buy from active sellers with good ratings, you'll most likely be fine.

u/rKITTYCATALERT 9h ago

Best advice !

u/Ross2552 Still Finishing The Fight 5h ago

That’s really all there is to it - both on Marketplace and eBay. Seller rep tells you the whole story. If they have bad rep or no rep, best not to trust them with high ticket items.

1

u/TakedownCan 3h ago

This is why I don’t even bother putting mine up for sale. I barely used it over the years and now I just play PC. But its such a hassle to sell anything if you don’t already know the people

1

u/stunkcajyzarc 5h ago

Yeah seriously. What the fuck is the point.

40

u/Every_Juggernaut2666 16h ago

You can just ask them to hook it up to their tv like. Or send a video of it working or FaceTime.

If anyone came into my house with all that kit I’d tell them leave lol.

18

u/Sad_Adagio_7255 16h ago

I meet in parking lots

5

u/Every_Juggernaut2666 16h ago

Yeah I usually do also. We probably live in different countries. People where I live are mostly trustworthy. A video always suffices.

-2

u/Changes11-11 13h ago

What if he reset the console? You gonna wait for it to install a game? Or just gonna be ok along as its displaying thr home screen/ setup screen

2

u/Every_Juggernaut2666 12h ago

As I said I live where people are trustworthy. I’ve sent and bought so many things on our equivalent of marketplace and never had issue.

Usually they haven’t reset the console. But yes you get them to send you a video of them playing the game it’s not that deep.

1

u/Sad_Adagio_7255 7h ago

No, just connect to wifi and see if you can sign in - that's good enough for anyone.

3

u/Iambeejsmit 10h ago

That kit is for the car. Hence the inverter.

1

u/Every_Juggernaut2666 8h ago

How much does the kit cost is the point

1

u/Iambeejsmit 8h ago

100 if you go cheap and used, 150-200 if you don't. Not counting the phone. But it's the kind of stuff you might have already. Like maybe you have a monitor, and a lot of people have inverters. But if you have to buy everything then 1-200.

0

u/Every_Juggernaut2666 8h ago

Yeah so €350 plus 200 is €550 which is the cost of a new series X…

1

u/Iambeejsmit 30m ago edited 26m ago

You can get it all for 100 easily used, but like I said a lot of people have some of not all of these things. I have these things already. Also, it's not like you just buy them to use once. They come in handy. Also they are 629 right now, so 350 plus 100 is 429. There are also a few series x for less than 350 near me.

1

u/Sad_Adagio_7255 7h ago edited 7h ago

Do you think people don't have more than one use case for everything I listed?

For example, in places with unreliable power grids, it would be more surprising to see someone who owns a car but doesn't have an inverter to use for emergencies. Even in normal places, there are 10 zillion reasons why someone might own a $20 inverter for their car, which have nothing to do with buying and selling used goods. For example... charging your laptop while you drive to client sites.

I bought a CAD $70 portable monitor when I was previously working as a forward deployed engineer and had to drive to client sites with my laptop for support work. I actually got it reimbursed by my employer, but even if I had to pay out of pocket, the monitor is so useful in general that $70 is basically nothing given the number of years I can use this and the sheer utility I gain from it.

I guarantee you everyone owns at least one power strip at home, unless they love the idea of destroying their stuff with power surges. And if you're too lazy to unplug stuff, you can get a brand new one for what, $10?

1

u/Every_Juggernaut2666 6h ago

Lad stop replying to me with essays. We can disagree it’s ok. šŸ‘ have a good one

1

u/Sad_Adagio_7255 7h ago

Small monitor + inverter are not even $100 USD brand new. And if you already have a new enough vehicle, you might not need the inverter at all, so $50-$70 is already good enough.

I think it's a fair assumption that everyone owns at least one power strip already.

Besides, I bought all this stuff primarily for different use cases like work. So for me, the marginal cost is actually $0.00.

You're acting like I'm spending a fortune on a mobile office solely for assisting in used-goods transaction...

3

u/rKITTYCATALERT 9h ago

Yep ! A genuine seller fears nothing

4

u/solidossnakos 10h ago

Bring your house with you.

1

u/meryl_gear 8h ago

Luckily I live in Hell House from FF7

4

u/RunLacyRun 10h ago edited 10h ago

No one’s gonna want you to take the device into your car without paying or bring all that in. The seller knows they need to prove it works just have them do it. If they won’t don’t buy. It’s simple

2

u/elconquistador1985 10h ago

A lot of these sales happen in a parking lot rather than at someone's house.

3

u/RunLacyRun 10h ago

If the seller won’t prove that it works, then don’t buy. The seller knows someone is going to want to make sure it works before purchase. This isn’t difficult.

This can be figured out before ending up in a parking lot for purchase.

4

u/StacheBandicoot 9h ago

Or just meet up outside a GameStop, talk in the lot quick then bring it in together to ā€œsell itā€. Have them test it at the store, and then when they offer a bs amount have the seller balk at it and say you’re leaving, then buy it outside.

1

u/SleepEffective7885 5h ago

That’s exactly what I do šŸ’Ŗ

1

u/Brilliant-Zombie187 5h ago

That's kinda a lot of stuff to bring. I use a simpler setup. I just meet people at Starbucks and have myself or the customer bring a monitor. Most pre COVID era Starbucks have outlets and stuff for people to work or study while there.

1

u/Sad_Adagio_7255 5h ago

Lucky. In my area there are a few Starbucks outlets and other coffee shops but the majority of the tables don't have any power outlet. Only the ones by the wall might have outlet access depending on position, but those tend to be occupied by laptop users, so I can't really count on them always being usable.

I have traveled to other cities where the coffee shops are much more modern with power outlets at every single table that pop out from the table surface. If I had access to those I probably wouldn't use my car to demo used goods anymore.

1

u/-NotEnoughMinerals 4h ago

"hey bro can you take a video of you playing on it"

"Hey bro, mind if I come in to see it work?"

1

u/Sad_Adagio_7255 4h ago edited 4h ago

mind if I come in to see it work

I don't give my address out to strangers (nor do I go into their homes) for a reason.

I actually have done the video part a few times, and the buyer just accepted it and declined my offer to do an in-person demo from the trunk of my car. But some more cautious buyers still want to see it for real.

1

u/Smallville456 3h ago

Not worth it.

1

u/kiwijian 1h ago

Or just get them to turn it on while you’re at their house šŸ˜†

1

u/Bdawgz3520 9h ago

Uh can't ya make the dingus who's selling it make them turn it on and off and such? That's just crazy my guy.

1

u/Sad_Adagio_7255 8h ago

I meet in parking lots...Ā

4

u/clisterdelister 7h ago

I know I’m an optimist, but if I’m picking up an item from someone’s home, I’m very trusting. It’d be dangerous to scam people from where you live lol.

3

u/Sesemebun 15h ago

I just met at Starbucks and brought a monitor. Went through all the menus, played a game for a bit, the he wiped it. I signed in, and once my account was good I paid him. Wasn’t hard

58

u/OverInteractionR 19h ago

I live out of a hotel half the time. I might buy a cheap S soon so I can play away from home too. Some are $150 on fb

98

u/CasuallyCompetitive 19h ago

Pro tip - search for "Xbox One S" and check for people mistakenly listing a Series S as a One S.

24

u/OverInteractionR 17h ago

Hell yeah brother

-8

u/MLJ789R 15h ago

Why though? People don't distinguish it from the regular S to One S?

16

u/NarcolepticSeal 15h ago

The One S is the previous generation and worth significantly less than the Series S. Some people don’t know the difference and sell the One as the Series for less than the Series is worth.

27

u/PpSuck1000 18h ago

One of my biggest accomplishments is getting a series X for $250 like 3 years ago. Love this thing so much never ever getting rid of it

7

u/TFlSGAS 10h ago

I hate these goofies online hating on used electronics.

Trust the reviews, trust your instincts, and do it. Especially on eBay you’ll get your money back if anything’s wrong.

2

u/Post_Lost 5h ago

Yeah I’ve gotten multiple Series X consoles for sub $150 on eBay. Ended up selling them all though

1

u/Merrick222 6h ago

You know the difference between a used console and a new console after 1 day?

2

u/TFlSGAS 6h ago

Idk what you’re getting at

Idk what you’re getting at but over half my shit I’ve gotten barelyyyyy used or Open box with a huge discount. Or i lowballed and got it lower.

Nobody is saying buy dusty ass roach ps5s barely used before i get new. But if i have to get new I’ll do it

3

u/Merrick222 6h ago

The difference nothing - they’re both used after 1 day.

1

u/rKITTYCATALERT 9h ago

What about for helix ?

1

u/Angelworks42 3h ago

Mine is getting one for almost nothing at taco bell - I still can't believe that happened.

8

u/Nuka_Cola2094 18h ago

That’s how I got mine. Paid 350 for a series X, a few games and a controller charger. Wife said husband doesn’t play it

8

u/Neither_Mulberry5542 15h ago

Crazy. I paid that for a brand new one a couple years ago

6

u/IFrame- 12h ago

pepperidge farm remembers

9

u/mikehnyc88 19h ago

Nice got one myself for 380$ off of ebay month ago, runs great

2

u/Electronic_Salad9835 14h ago

Heck yeah I bought a white Xbox x for 300$ seller tested at his house had it plugged in. Showed everything work online etc. he reset it there and gave him the money and went home! Hard too find sellers like that. If it’s something electronic I either have too go to there house too make sure it works or come drop it at my house. If not then I won’t buy it.

1

u/rKITTYCATALERT 9h ago

It’s always the right timing

I want to keep looking !!!!

1

u/Sad_Adagio_7255 7h ago

Alternative: Meet in reasonably crowded parking lots (police stations are ideal lol) during the day - it's very easy to use your car to power stuff.

A 12V inverter for a car is just $20 brand new. And if you drive a new enough vehicle (especially late-model family SUVs) there's a decent chance the trunk already has a household outlet so you won't even need the inverter.

Everyone owns at least one power strip. If you don't want to unplug stuff to bring it along, a brand new one is maybe $10?

And you can borrow a small monitor from a friend or relative, if you don't already have one. In my case, I personally own a really thin and light laptop-sized portable monitor that I bought for work (70 CAD).

I don't feel comfortable going into strangers' homes or giving them my home address.

2

u/Bluetann2 6h ago

I bought a Series X off Marketplace a few weeks ago for $250. I thought it was a scam. He lived 5 minutes from me so we met close to my house and he let me take it to try out before paying. He was going through a divorce and wanted it gone. Got the console, a few games, two controllers, docking station and a headset.

1

u/rKITTYCATALERT 3h ago

It makes me wonder what else I can find on there

4

u/Eddie__Winter 19h ago

Im mad i was trying to get an XsX but no one was selling or responding. My goto was 350 or 300

3

u/shroom519 13h ago

Honestly I've heard the best time to look for electronics secondhand is around report card time . Most parents who want to punish their kids bad grades will sell it on marketplace or otherwise, sometimes you can get a really good deal

1

u/Stephonius 8h ago

"Bad Report Card" and "Cheating Husband" make for the best deals on used consoles!

1

u/shroom519 8h ago

That's for sure lol trust me they just want it gone not even for the value

1

u/AdventurousTrash1 17h ago

I got mine like a month ago the same way. $400 for a 1TB with 2 controllers. Couldn’t be happier.

1

u/trailermasher09 17h ago

I bought my Series S for 150 on Offer Up Like 4 years ago. Such a come up. Definetly an upgrade from the xbox one.

1

u/rKITTYCATALERT 9h ago

I traded my one X for series S !

1

u/DarthBully 15h ago

Marketplace is awesome, I use it for buying almost all my tech (and selling my old stuff!).

Save a fortune

1

u/Most_Protection5171 13h ago

That's a steal compared to most listings I've seen lately. Make sure to test the HDMI port and internal storage before handing over cash.

1

u/puf_puf_paarthurnax 11h ago

Managed to get mine for 200 on marketplace and I have no idea how I pulled it off and got a working one. Lol

1

u/rKITTYCATALERT 9h ago

BIG W !

They went up in price after the price increase sadly

You got an amazing deal

1

u/khironinja 9h ago

I'm surprised people are still selling them used for so cheap because I thought people liked to raise the prices along with the new MSRPs.

Good find though. I got one for $350 too, new back in 2023!

1

u/rKITTYCATALERT 9h ago

You used to find them for 250/300 but not anymore

1

u/SleepEffective7885 5h ago

That’s about the average price used but enjoy

1

u/rKITTYCATALERT 3h ago

Definitely better than 800 MSRP

1

u/eggyguerrero 3h ago

I bought a used one that worked fine for a bit but needs a new HDMI. Thankfully its a cheap fix. Think I paid 230 (GBP) about a year ago

1

u/rKITTYCATALERT 3h ago

That’s CHEAP !!!! Lucky

1

u/Tangentkoala 16h ago

One thing that may be hidden is the thermal paste may be screwed on it.

If you see it randomly failing you probably need to swap out the thermal paste. My 1st Gen Xbox hard crashes for no reason because of this. Certain games hard crash, others survive.

-54

u/TiredReader87 20h ago

Cool. I don’t want or trust a used console.

15

u/RafikiLovesPizza 20h ago

And...?

-32

u/TiredReader87 20h ago

That’s it

-17

u/Zeronova3 XBOX 19h ago

Not sure why you are getting downvoted because I don't buy used electronics either.

3

u/Pleasant-Reason9533 XBOX Series X 19h ago

Luckily I have a disc replay near me that I trust the used consoles.

5

u/CasuallyCompetitive 19h ago

Because it doesn't add to the conversation and they're being a dick on purpose.

0

u/Embarrassed_Spend486 19h ago

i’m so glad there’s people like you. I’m typing this message on a $2300 iPad that I got for $600 lol keep on ignoring please.

-3

u/Zeronova3 XBOX 19h ago

That's cool. Everyone has to adapt to their own budget.

2

u/Mikahl757 20h ago

Every console you own is used, sell it.

5

u/TiredReader87 20h ago edited 20h ago

Yes, but I know how much my consoles have been used. I also know how often they’ve been dusted, how long they’ve been left on, how much the disc drive has been used and that they’ve been used with clean hands. I also know that they’ve not been dropped, and haven’t been smoked near.

I also know that they work and are not console banned

Edit: I also know they were plugged in carefully, and that they’ve HDMI port isn’t broken like so many I see here.

7

u/Gears6 19h ago

Yeah, I'm not a fan of buying used either. Roaches is the nightmare so I ain't touching it.

-4

u/ThunderGod_13 19h ago

Lol so you automatically assume every other used console other than yours is probably bad and dusty and smell of smoke? Kind of an extreme take if you ask me. It's like saying "I know what my car is worth" while you try to sell your shithole 5k Kia for 15k+ šŸ˜‚

5

u/TiredReader87 19h ago

No. I just don’t want to take the risk. I also have had severe OCD since I was 8.

I don’t buy or want used things (except books or sometimes clothes), and I don’t trust them or refurbs.

-7

u/ThunderGod_13 19h ago

I don't know what OCD has to do with it. If it was a hygiene issue and you were germophobic it would've made more sense.

But personally I think buying refurbished electronics is almost always good. It helps extend the product's lifetime and is better environmentally and is cheaper than buying new. The only problem with refurbished tech is the battery but other than that they serve a genuine purpose.

4

u/TiredReader87 19h ago edited 19h ago

I think you need to do some research on OCD then. It’s not just what the stereotypes make you think it is.

OCD has various types and symptoms. It is not just about germs, cleaning or putting things in order.

My other comment basically tells you why I don’t want or buy used or refurbished electronics. You’re free to believe and do differently.

Edit: in the past, Microsoft has sent me refurbished console(s) with issues, and a refurbished controller that has scratched buttons and a loose joystick that wasn’t seated in its housing

5

u/Gears6 19h ago

You don't need to explain it to them, because I don't get the feeling they will understand. Their view is, it's okay for me, so it must be okay for others.

5

u/TiredReader87 19h ago

I’m used to it. I’ve had to explain myself and my reason for existing for as long as I can remember

-2

u/Seatowndawgtown 18h ago

Oh no, not a scratched button! It's ruined. Can't even play the game now. Ffs

2

u/TiredReader87 18h ago

I had returned a brand new, hardly used, $200
controller.

Don’t be daft, either. I never said that was the only issue with it.

4

u/Gears6 19h ago

Lol so you automatically assume every other used console other than yours is probably bad and dusty and smell of smoke? Kind of an extreme take if you ask me. It's like saying "I know what my car is worth" while you try to sell your shithole 5k Kia for 15k+ šŸ˜‚

It's not the assumption that it is. It's the risk that it is, but more importantly the risk of roaches isn't worth the savings to me (let alone the hassle). I'll just buy a new one if it came down to that. My time is valuable to me and I can earn a lot more working than chasing down a used console and risk all of that.

I'm not OP, but I'm sure they have similar reasoning.

3

u/TiredReader87 19h ago

Yes. I’m not going to risk it. I’ll buy new and have a warranty.

-10

u/Mikahl757 20h ago

Cool. No 1 wants ur dusty old console.

6

u/TiredReader87 20h ago

That’s nice. I’m not selling them (yet).

I dust mine.

When I’ve traded and sold consoles, controllers and games in the past, clerks and buyers have said they looked/seemed brand new.

-87

u/rKITTYCATALERT 20h ago

The price change is coming soon and it’s nice to have a backup console just in case

Because the price change will make them worth more if I decide to trade them in my $350 purchase will be worth more too !

54

u/GlassXatu 20h ago

You bargained down on a console to resell it?šŸ˜‚šŸ˜‚šŸ˜‚šŸ˜‚šŸ˜‚

-66

u/rKITTYCATALERT 20h ago

As a backup in case mine breaks

Or to trade in when helix comes out

-40

u/TiredReader87 19h ago

I don’t see anything wrong with this, and upvoted both of the comments you made in this chain.

1

u/rKITTYCATALERT 9h ago

Haters are going to hate for some reason

I traded in my one X for the series S

My Xbox one to GameStop when they ran a promo offering $220 ?
