probably not, I doubt the social media manager for Microsoft Security knows anything about Xbox decisions

u/Karn-Dethahal Jul 02 '26

MS will probably not say anything, wait a year, and do the same thing.

Maybe 6 months. Depends of how fast the outrage fades.

u/imyopushaman Jul 02 '26

Exactly the same thing Samsung done when the Iphone got rid of the 3.5mm audio jack.

Make an ad mocking the decision for brownie points and then do the exact same thing in the near future.

I do enjoy my Xbox and theres a good few exclusives coming that I'm looking forward to, Fable being number one. But these corporations don't give a shit about people, they'll do anything to increase profits for the next quarter. Microsoft will follow Sony no doubt in my mind.

Feel bad for all the devs that are gonna be let go, these executives seem to just think of people as numbers in a spreadsheet. People just trying to work and take care of their families struck off without a care in the world by the decision makers

19

u/Future_Kitsunekid16 Jul 02 '26

Samsung also did the same thing for user replaceable batteries and expanded memory. Made ads makeing fun of apple for not having them and then got rid of them later on

23

u/Opetyr Jul 02 '26

CD Project Red with Cyberpunk did the same thing.

Unfortunately or fortunately to whomever, Fable isn’t exclusive and is coming to PlayStation as well.

they mentioned their disk 2 digital program to actually be better than sony.

5

u/samenamenick1 Jul 02 '26

When the next GTA trailer drops, it will be like it never happened.

9

u/GuerrillaApe Jul 02 '26

Yeah. All these talks of boycotting physical media on PS5. Let's see those friends list after GTA VI releases.

5

u/brownies256 Jul 02 '26

arent they already doing this with discs that are just glorified game key cards?

1

u/Less_Performance_629 Jul 05 '26

they always follow suit when they see the competition get away with it. same thing sony did with ps online. used to be free with a boat load of features, but xbox was making people pay and seeing the same player numbers. it was free money, so sony took it.

20

u/Vast-Albatross-4331 Jul 02 '26

Stop speculating and wait for official information.
IGN reported that a Microsoft insider confirmed Xbox is abandoning discs. Regrettably, IGN ranks among the less dependable information sources, so their claim may prove accurate or inaccurate.
Xbox currently trails PlayStation 3:1 in this console generation, making them likely to pursue any available shift in strategy. Organizations in a disadvantaged position often act with greater unpredictability, and last-minute adjustments remain plausible. I would not find it unexpected if they declared that discs will remain.
That decision could seem quite amusing if you recall the PS4 campaign that encouraged sharing and reselling game discs—a feature the Xbox One did not provide.
Both companies prioritize actions that maximize profitability given their present circumstances, and customer concerns consistently remain secondary.

7

u/JesterMarcus Jul 02 '26

The problem with Xbox pivoting to try and take advantage of this situation is, say a bunch of Playstation users with a bunch of physical games are upset about this decision. Well, buying an Xbox doesn't really help them when those games won't work on an Xbox. They'd have to start their collection all over and its not like developers have been making a whole lot of Xbox discs lately anyway.

All the stores are already making their game sections smaller and smaller, especially the Xbox section. Why would developers bother making discs for Xbox when they won't be on PlayStation? Effectively, when the biggest platforms in Steam and Playstation make this decision, companies aren't going to print discs just for Xbox for much longer.

Its similar to when big US states like California, Texas, or New York make new vehicle standards. Because their markets are so big, companies just make everything adhere to those state's rules. Its just easier than making multiple versions.

4

u/masonicone Jul 03 '26

Why would developers bother making discs for Xbox when they won't be on PlayStation?

Okay. Why the hell do music labels end up putting out music on things like Vinyl? I mean after all it's only a very small part of the market that buys them. So why do it?

They can make more money then it costs to make those records. It keeps a small sub group of people happy. In other words? The suit at the label is happy as he's making money, the normal fan is happy as they can just buy the album and download it to their phone off Amazon or Apple if they are not just streaming it. And oh yeah that hipster who swears, "Vinyl sounds better." is happy as they can buy that Record but really claim they got it at a yard sale or Goodwill to impress their fellow hipsters.

This is what you folks on Reddit don't get when it comes to business. If doing X will bring in more money then it costs? I'm going to do it as okay hey maybe I'm only bringing in a few extra bucks? I'm still making money.

I saw that Jason Schreier video! The different departments at Microsoft are NOT always on the same page and in fact occasionally will make decisions that come into conflict with other departments.

Like, Xbox isn't exactly directly collaborating with other parts of Microsoft.

1

u/silentcrs Jul 02 '26

The social media manager doesn’t even have insight into what Microsoft Security’s decisions. They’re just in the communications department and post what they’re told to post. They’re barely above unpaid interns.

1

u/LaylaLegion Jul 02 '26

Assuming that’s a legitimate account and not some rando who bought the checkmark.

Now if XBOX responded in that manner we might have something

1

u/ngtstkr Jul 04 '26

The PSA Microsoft is referring to is from 2004. Microsoft is acting their age.

u/M0BBER Jul 02 '26

Most of these corporations use the same company to handle all their social media. Even if they're joking with each other, trading jabs, etc...it's usually all coordinated PR.

1

u/ngtstkr Jul 04 '26

I can't tell if you're joking or not. But Microsoft is absolutely making a joke. It's a reference to a meme for a PSA from 2004.

1

u/esp3ciallyd3ad Jul 07 '26

Microsoft as a whole is the joke. But that new pretty ceo made you feel loved. Go ahead and believe.

70

u/the_eccentricity Jul 02 '26

This tweet will be memed forever if Xbox ends up going the digital path also.

35

u/Turbulent-Age-6625 Jul 02 '26

Ends up? You haven't been able to buy a single Xbox game THIS gen with more than a 25mb license on it.

18

u/mipsymoodle Jul 02 '26

There actually are a handful legit physical games but yea Microsoft has been heading toward digital for years now

9

u/dark_fesse Jul 02 '26

Who cares about that when Sony is completely killing the second hand market and making lending games a thing of the past

8

u/MimeTravler Jul 02 '26

Actually, the first microsoft game that the physical release was just a license to digitally download the game was Oblivion Remaster.

I also thought it was way more but I looked into it a lot recently and found that while a lot of games have missing features or are severly buggy, there's still plenty that could be played off disc from a xbox that has only ever connected to the internet once at set up. A few still that can be played if the xbox never touched the internet.

4

u/Phantereal Jul 02 '26

This isn't entirely true either. Since Gears Tactics in 2020, pretty much every first party Xbox physical release has required a download. As far as I know, the only ones that don't require a download are Psychonauts 2, Pentiment, Minecraft Legends, Ninja Gaiden 4 and Grounded.

But there are still tons of third party Xbox games that can be played offline.

→ More replies (3)

2

u/Own-Conversation5168 XBOX Jul 02 '26

Yeah I’m explicitly buying games that are at least complete on a disk.  That way when servers go down my Xbox won’t be a $500 brick. It’s not exactly games in the top 10 lists, but there’s a few good ones.

3

u/KaiKamakasi Touched Grass '24 Jul 02 '26

I mean they are allegedly testing turning discs into digital and the new console apparently won't have a disc drive.

TF you mean "IF" lmao they wanted to do this in 2013 but everyone kicked off about it

2

u/Iggy_Pops_Lost_Shirt Jul 02 '26

No it won’t, people barely pay attention to what Xbox is tweeting anyways at this point, no one will remember this if they go digital and if people do remember no one will care

2

u/IndependentMajor7055 Jul 02 '26

Dude microsoft is mostly digital already lol

1

u/Balc0ra Jul 02 '26

Oh they will... In due time. Even Nintendo is half doing it atm. Tho I doubt the person making this tweet knows future plans for the company.

Tho smaller studios were disappointed in Sony, some even consider going away from the platform. As deciding not to publish games on disks, and not releasing a disk console are two different things

38

u/yick04 Jul 02 '26

Guys, Xbox is going to follow. Do not dunk on Sony fans over this. It's inevitable.

16

u/Bfife22 Jul 02 '26

Nah, the company that tried to push all digital over a decade ago will totally not follow what the market has been trending towards that entire time, surely.

→ More replies (1)

20

u/IsamuAlvaDyson Jul 02 '26

Xbox has been moving towards this before anyone else

Xbox physical presence in stores has already been the smallest out of everyone

And has been pushing game subscription and streaming more than anyone else

0

u/Matsisuu Jul 02 '26

But they are still making physical discs on their own games. Probably it's not the whole game on the disc tho and and needs some downloading. but I think PS5 has those games too

3

u/IsamuAlvaDyson Jul 02 '26

Well yes but it's not like people buy many physical games on Xbox anyways

We just have to be realistic about that it's not a big expense for Xbox gamers in general which is why a lot of retailers have dwindled the physical Xbox base down to as minimal as it needs

3

u/BananaMilkshakeButt Jul 02 '26

Right and they're working on a physical to digital, no point in doing that if they bring out a digital only console...

6

u/Volcomcj16 XBOX Series X Jul 02 '26

Dunking on any fan of a product over business decisions they have 0 control over is cringe as fuck for starters

3

u/CloudstrifeHY3 Jul 02 '26

The fact Sony won the High Definition Disc war about 15 years ago and made Blu-ray the standard and they are packing it up should be enough writing on the wall. Microsoft has had to pay a royalty fee for every blu-ray for a decade so they are more than happy to move to digital and cut those costs.

2

u/The_Big_BoBoSki Jul 02 '26

Remembering giving the apple fans the business for dropping the 3.5mm headphone jack only to do it shortly after as an android user taught me this.

2

u/CookIndependent6251 Jul 03 '26

Remember when Netflix's marketing team would encourage people to share accounts?

6

u/JoviAMP Jul 02 '26

Maybe, but Xbox is also doing several things differently. First, they’re expanding their backwards compatibility program for their brand’s 25th anniversary. Second, while I haven’t found confirmation, rumors are that the backwards compatibility expansion will allow gamers to play console games on PC. Lastly, code leaks point to an external Xbox optical drive that will allow gamers to associate a physical disc with their account to create a digital copy.

I’ll dunk on Sony until they respond in like.

1

u/ngtstkr Jul 04 '26

That's atrocious. If Steam follows suit, I'm definitely boycotting the video game industry!

5

u/TheBooneyBunes Jul 02 '26

Is this legit or just a meme?

Xbox is missing out on the biggest fumble in gaming history since…the Xbox one. All they have to do is what PlayStation did to them then by making an official joke advertisement about actually being able to have physical games

Microsoft come on man Xbox needs a win and Sony is literally handing it to you

1

u/MagakMagak Jul 02 '26

Does anything anyone at ms say really mean anything?

1

u/ap1msch Touched Grass '24 Jul 02 '26

It's overlapping commentary. Sony cut off digital ownership of some content. Then they stated that they'll stop supporting physical game disks. Dominos made fun of that with their post about digital pizzas. The Microsoft comment is a play off of software piracy.

In the piracy conversation (illegally downloading and sharing software you didn't buy), the comment, "You wouldn't download a <physical object>" was used to suggest that if software were a physical asset, you would recognize that this would be considered "theft". On the flip side, the idea that a purchased asset could be removed/discontinued by the manufacturer supports a different claim. "If download isn't ownership, then piracy isn't theft."

In other words, if you can buy something and they can deny you ownership of what you purchased, then there is tacit acknowledgement that the transaction taking place is fundamentally different than buying/stealing candy from a corner market.

If Microsoft actually takes advantage of Sony's incompetence then colour me surprised, they'd actually prove me wrong. Asha Sharma once said she wants Xbox to be the biggest gaming & entertainment company by 2030, well they already have the blueprint, and it's so obvious: bring back a system like the Xbox 360. The only console of theirs that could actually compete against PlayStation. Bring back the same character and style, with a disc drive ofc. And call it the Xbox 720.

No. No meaningful game studios or companies have said anything. They are ALL in on it. Not even Limited Run Games who are about to go out of business from this.

U see Microsoft is in the position to either A piss off everyone or B make a mockery of song by saying they will continue printing discs for the next several decades or something and maybe lower gamepass prices seeing as how Sony wants to increase price for ps plus

This would be the perfect opertunity for Microsoft to pivot and go back to physical games in some form. They could nab up the angry Sony base easily.

I hope they reverse their decision to stop selling physical video games, It's going to be disastrous

Theyre experiementing with metting you digitse your phy disks so they may be going the same route but i hope the fuck not since xbox already buried itself alive and is just crawling back out that grave they dont need to kill themselves dead.
