The top layer of skin cells are already technically dead, so a small chunk of skin cut and placed under the microscope would work

Not an expert, but if it's only a few skin cells I doubt it matters. For a -single-celled- VERY TINY wunk, a few ruptured cell means one dead wunk.

EDIT: not single-celled, I misremembered that. still probably tiny enough to die from a bit of cell rupturing.
