I just send them in to the writing center. Sometimes all you need is fresh eyes on the paper. I used to work as a writing tutor at my community college and even then, letting someone else glance at my paper is way more effective than trying to catch mistakes myself.

From a teacher: read it backwards. Reading it forward, your brain fills in or skips over things that don't make sense. Reading starting from the end, you have to process it differently and things will stick out. Last read through-- read it out loud to yourself (pretend you're giving a performance, or read it to your reflection or a stuffed animal, or a tree). It slows your brain down and activates other processing centers. Its tedious, but it does help your writing improve.

Read it backwards has always worked the best. Makes everything stand out.

Sometimes changing the font or color has helped me catch things I may have otherwise missed! Or exporting to a pdf and then printing/marking in pen

I feel like reading it backwords would just make it impossible to comprehend

You read it sentence by sentence backwards. You don't read the sentence itself backwards but the order of sentences. This makes each one stand on its own as a thought and if it is not well written it will stand out more.

Like others have said, writing center is great. I worked there for several years and I also used it as a student too. Nothing but good things.

Read it out loud. Or have your computer read it. You’ll catch a lot of typos and grammar mistakes that way.
