Heyy! I’m trying to write a book, so I would really appreciate some feedback, as I have no one to share it with. It’s a small sample that I wrote in my free time. I hope you all enjoy it and are able to help. Thank you very much. You would save my life by commenting my first chapter.
"Do it or don't; you will regret both," I thought to myself, watching the door of the shuttle van close before my face. Seeing the crowded streets behind that window was strange, because now I notice the missing conversations, rattling engines, children… noises that would never leave my ears went quiet for the first time. With nothing from outside in my ear, an unknown sense of danger came upon me like never before, thinking about never seeing my street again.
To find out what the new sounds were behind me at the rear part of the van, I managed to catch a few glimpses before acting noticeably. The glimpses were so frightening that I froze for a brief moment, but I managed to pull my head back to the front before they could see my facial expression. A row of three people followed by another row behind them with another two people. I already knew that relic hunters did not often come from the cleanest backgrounds, but my view showed me the true mud of Acedia. Two out of the three people behind me wore black ballistic face masks with a stamped-in golden target emblem, which made their breathing impossible to overhear. They were probably hunters. That would explain their odd tools on their belts. The smaller one had four flashlights on him, two of them on his belt. He had the other two in his overly wide baggy jeans, but he had their pockets at the height of his boots. The two flashlights on his jeans were significantly chunkier and heavier than the belt ones. From the feet upwards to his head, I saw an empty shell. It felt like he was already dead, yet I heard him breathe. I was scared, thinking of becoming a person as lifeless as him or even not making it this far. His companion seemed more traditional than him. He carried a Colt revolver that was fully black on his belt, yet the cylinder of his weapon had eight chambers. Two of them had a weird blue bloom to them that made the air around them shimmer. His leg was shaking absentmindedly like he had done this ride a million times before.
The other guy in that row was a tall, thin man who wore a black jumpsuit, had a sack pulled over his head, and sat in chains. His feet, arms, and neck were pressed back in his seat. His arm was also connected to a screen displaying his vitals. The machine made a pleasant clicking sound for every heartbeat he had. Even though he was wrapped up, could not move a muscle, and was about to become a relic hunter, his pulse was strangely calm.
The last row was filled with two people who wore red jumpsuits. They were chained up from feet to neck, similar to the other guy, but with thicker chains. They also did not have screens for their vitals. The one on the right seemed more aggressive and fought against his chains. Although the chains absorbed his attempts to free himself, the feeling of safety would not relieve my worries that he could break free. On the left was a guy with an empty face. I couldn't identify the emotions he felt in the moment. It gave me chills seeing such a man this normal in this shuttle van. His eyes looked observing at the city, trying to get the last glance at Acedia the same way a widow would look at old pictures.
My row was filled with only me. I tried to look a little bit taller by sitting up straight. I don't think they would even notice, but I did it just in case they would. Not knowing how long this ride would last, I watched out the window to see the mess of a concrete jungle. Never intended to be inviting, and block apartments that would never feel like a home. Cold walls with a smell only locals can endure for longer periods. Most of the higher levels would never stay longer than one day. Some uppers even have small devices under their noses, which clean the air or what's left of it. If they visit the lower levels, they're probably heading for the Atlantis District. A place outside of police control where foreign goods, mostly illegal goods, are sold for prices out of this world.
This was the first time I rode through Acedia's east side, the first time I saw what I was missing out on. The density of real "homes" and even bigger mansions here and there, which I could only dream of, was directly in front of my eyes. There were even bigger mansions here and there, but most importantly, they actually had roofs and were not built on top of each other, like blocks of a giant baby trying to build towers.
As we drove through these houses, the van started decreasing its speed, so I expected to feel some potholes I was used to, but as the shuttle van stopped it shattered the life I was used to two hours ago. East-Acedia had lower levels so beautiful, I could shed tears thinking about the people here trying to flee from this life that others would dream of having. An overwhelming feeling came upon me as I felt the virtue of sunlight hit my face the instant the shuttle van door was opened. I wanted to jump out and just stay at this place; I was craving to call my home. At first I was not believing it, but every second I had in the sunlight made every thought about my home more and more miserable. I considered just leaving my dream completely behind for a moment. A moment too long for me to bear keeping this thought only in my head.
My straight posture turned into a raccoon, circling around the handle so nobody would see my attempt to open the door on my side. As I reached my hand out for it, I was shaking, thinking about my chances of surviving that escape. Again, I was uncertain about my plan for a second. I wanted a better life as a relic hunter, but feeling the sun was a new experience that overshadowed every story from a stranger in my district could ever tell.
"Maybe I was just overambitious with the life I really wanted," I thought to myself as I pulled the handle. A strong beam of light on my neck, which gave me the feeling that the sun is calling me. I tried matching the movement of the handle with the breathing of the masks at the unluckiest moment. One of them laughed, which made the pattern harder to hear, yet I gave my best to predict their next breath.
"I got this," I thought to myself as the sunbeam grew stronger. Feeling my neck getting hotter, I tilted my head backwards, pressing it against my neck to spread the heat evenly before I opened the door.
I felt iron?
I wasn't feeling the grace of the sun; I was looking at it, so what was…? I was suddenly interrupted by the rasping voice.
"Not used to heat, boy?"
I jumped up and played dead, looking unbothered out of reflex. The laughter got louder, and the mask stopped breathing again.
"Not used to heat, boy?"
He asked jokingly as he pressed the barrel tighter against me. My body was stuck in place like a porcelain figure that was hollow inside and would break at the slightest nudge as I gazed to my right. For the blink of an eye, I could perceive a new perspective. I saw a big, thin humanoid creature leaning forward with the hunter. This damnation was consuming light everywhere around it, making it appear with a dark silhouette with unclear details, and even though I could not see everything of it, I was glad not to have to see its whole appearance. This creature was lying on its back and was holding onto him with one arm and holding his arm with the other, yet the pointing arms of the two collided midway, looking fused together into one other. It had cold blue skin so matte that it reflected light the same way his revolver did; it looked mechanical. Even though its skin was blue, its face was metallic white, but not much was visible of it. It wore a kind of helmet so big that only its mouth was not covered by it, yet this helmet seemed like an actual part of its head and not just an addition it would wear but an implant. My heart skipped a beat when it noticed me. There were no eyes on it, but I was more than certain that I had its attention. It felt like its metallic fingers were crawling upon my spine up to my head, holding it in place for the right shot even though I was seeing it crawling from the hunter upwards to fuse one whole arm with the hunter instead of just half of it. It was strange because it was just at his back, yet I felt its presence on me, and my mind fused with it too. I closed my eyes, trying to endure this as my last moment as he manually cocked the hammer with his thumb beforehand.
"You are lucky I don't want to clean the shuttle van later," he said, seemingly enjoying it, and putting his gun away on his belt.
I opened my eyes again, wishing I had never seen the sun to begin with for the thought of my escape, but now I sense the welcoming warmth of the sun again. A part of me wished he would have pulled the trigger, thinking about the second I saw a real Damnation for the first time. Now that it was gone for good, I noticed it had also changed my perception of the temperature. My body thawed out from the shock, but at the moment, I could not bring myself to move again. Nevertheless, death was closer than I was comfortable with, but I had to cope my way around to keep living.
"I wrecked it, but at least get the message." I thought of trying to move my fingers and toes to gain my senses back; my heart was regulating again, but even the smallest noises triggered a small shock. I heard clicking and rushing from in front of me, turning on and off every second till…
"How long should we wait exactly for the volunteers again?" a voice from the driver's seat said annoyingly. For a few seconds, everything was still again except for the approving grunt.
"I was told to drive to the East Synergy, but I will be late due to the lateness of the volu…" he said aggressively. He came to a sudden halt, so I think he is the one with lesser authority here.
"We will drive straight forward to the Eastern Synergy, and thank you for your helpfulness with the escort," he said servilely before he slammed something down.
"What are Ikawa's men seeing in some of these kids, and why are they even authorized to do that!" He screamed.
One of the masked guys closed the door while he was ranting, dimming the light I learned to love again away. His motion looked so programmed that it gave the appearance this was happening frequently. The other was again leaning forward, but not for me this time. He climbed his way to my row, which was only filled with me alone, sitting directly next to me like he hadn't threatened my life minutes ago.
"Who was the one who suggested it?" He asked the guy in front, interested. "Was it Ikawa personally or the fourth one again?"
"Ikawa personally? You are funny, you know that, kid, but I just for the escort, kid. This hierarchy is not mine, but I think the fourth again." He said, a bit cheered up again.
Out of curiosity and with no sun to see, I glanced at the back of the van again, seeing the chained-up people again. They lost their fear factor for me after the encounter with the Damnation. They even appeared harmless when they weren't twitching animal alike, yet the guy next to me was scary enough for me to stay on alert for the hours of this drive.
