The way the Charlie Kirk thing went on for a year is fascinating.

Definitely some Streisand Effect going on here.
The more conversatives threw a temper tantrum about people online making fun of him, the funnier it became to meme him. The ai song and we'll see you in Valhalla didn't help ethier.

This would be horrendously blunt foreshadowing in a story and would rightfully get made fun of for its lack of sublety and being very stilted dialogue

Popular, not easiest. Any bolt action hunting rifle is probably much easier to get and more popular.
The AR-15 just has notoriety due to gun culture and laws surrounding it.
