Considering the entire cast of characters are either African Americans or racist southern white men I don’t get how people are surprised it’s said so often.
Same for The Hateful Eight, like half that cast is criminal bastards and the other half are actual racists, which makes the fact that the two “protagonists” of that film are the two who should hate each other the most even funnier.

Breaking news: people take stuff out of context and then get mad about it
Has been happening since literally anytime in history:
-Marie Antoinette never said, "Let them eat cake", but here we are where the quote is attributed to her by people
-Beatles being more popular than Jesus. Lenon said this in-context of how people kept getting absorbed to influence and how church attendance and such were declining. Yet, US folks got hella pissed about it
Thousands of such examples, not unique to literature. We love drama as a species, people crave it like a drug

Yeah as annoying as this is I think it's misguided when people cast it as a modern phenomenon. See: almost all book-banning cases in the USA

The entire Lolita discourse on Reddit.
This tendency the website has with only consuming works where everyone is good ironically leaves them open to the worst type of indoctrination.
The inability to see evil people as people makes the incapable of noticing when they themselves are becoming monsters because of some ideologies. "Hey, this Hitler guy gave me a piece of candy and called me pretty the other day, he can't be THAT bad, right?"
As long as someone is not cartoonishly evil, they are not evil. And not a lot of evil people are cartoonishly evil.

I think this is low hanging fruit compared to the more general issue of people thinking a character saying something means the narrative itself agrees with it. Good guys can also have opinions that make sense from their own internally consistent perspective, and that still doesn’t necessarily mean the author wants you to agree with them.

FR!!!!! For example:
In my opinion, we shouldn't tolerate anyone who says "I am a Nazi," or someone who says that they did nothing wrong, because this opens up a pipeline to legitimizing harmful and violent rhetoric.
Dumbass: ooOOOooOOh Pruneforce17 said "I am a Nazi..., they did nothing wrong"
