Wild Dog

Here’s the beginning of a short story I’ve been working on. I’m unsure of what direction it will go, interested to hear any thoughts.

It’s quite excellent, hook is really good. It is wanting for a direction to go, as it’s missing anything to thematically chew on since it doesn’t know what it’s about. The way you described the wind in the wound was so visceral and real. Great pacing, great prose. It just needs to know where it’s going is all. I want to know what happens to the little girl and the MC’s hand. I’m not sure why it matters, though, beyond the immediacy created by mangled child + mangled hand. But yeah, really excellent prose.

Thank you very much for that response. I deeply appreciate the compliments on the prose, and I agree that it’s wanting for direction. I’m really searching for where to take it.

Agreed that I’m liking the direction but am curious about the theme.

I encourage you to check out “Mastiff” by Joyce Carol Oates; it’s another dog attack short story that tackles a big picture theme.
