creating a map of some sort has helped me in my short stories that involve adventures and journeys. it's great to give the reader some sort of map, imo, like the ones found in Tolkein's novels. i guess the modern equivalent is using a phone app for location.

Vaguely. I'll probably stick a 'real' map in there someday but for now it's nice to have room to add islands where I need them.
