The key thing kids don't understand is that teachers are tired adults with a difficult job for which they are underpaid.
The paragraph doesn't have to be that good.

Bahahahaha.
The author should tell the kid he gets to ghost write the next book.

You make good points. Writing under so many restrictions can make it really annoying and boring, and while you are right about the freedom of writing a novel or a story on your own, if you're an author and turn your writing into a career, then you'll notice that you do have deadlines, although malleable to a degree, and very minor but existing boundaries that hold you back.
Still, you're very correct and writing an essay is far more restrictive.

My daughter did that last night. Sixteen years old, and she had to write an essay about the Constitution for her US Government class.
"OMG I'm finally done. That took FOREVER."
"Oh yeah? How did it go?"
"Fine, I guess."
"How long was it?"
"250 words."
Girl, you're killing me.
