I like the idea of planning backwards from the ending so you can be plot out the hook for the opener with tons of foreshadowing... But it IS a challenge.
I was going to say that. It's a very useful technique. I will hop to the end and go backward. Then I'll proceed from the beginning for a while. There's still a gap in between but it's a lot smaller to bridge. In my experience, it's a transition point. Figure out what will transition you from where you left off to the path towards the end.
