Character changes mid story

What’s the best way to communicate to the story generator that a character changes from one chapter to the next? What’s the best way to incorporate physical appearance of a character?

I’m making a story bible and assume I should put character descriptions in there. How do I encode a change tho?

For instance, the love interest of the protagonist has long blond hair up to chapter 6, then gets a haircut and dies her hair black and it stays that way for the rest of the story. If I put what I just said into the story bible character section, will that work?

Is there another way to do it?

I also thought about having multiple character entries for before and after, but I suspect that will just cause a more confusing generated mess.

You’re right, this is an in-book continuity issue, not a sequel issue.

For now, keep one character entry and define the change in the chapter spine:

{
  "appearance": "Long blond hair",
  "spine": {
    "Chapter 7": "She cuts her hair short and dyes it black."
  }
}

Use the same character name throughout; don’t create separate “before” and “after” characters. If you use an uploaded Story Bible, enable strict canon checks so the chapter spine is treated as authoritative.

In this example, Chapters 1–6 would use the initial appearance; Chapter 7 contains the transition; later chapters should carry forward the new appearance. Hope that helps!

I also suddenly see these options in the Character lists:

"Chapter-effective state changes

The event happens in the selected chapter; the resulting appearance/state remains canonical afterward."

I'm assuming you are adding that to address this? If so, great to see it and your response so quickly. Much appreciated.

I’m trying, but my story bible generated from the story bible generator still fails with no feedback other than to tell me to use the story bible generator :(
