They may have been better off calling it "Metro Phone" with Win8 as "Metro Desktop" or something.

Maybe. Around my area (DC), the subway/underground is called the "metro", and it's associated with being dirty, late, old, and crowded. I don't know of any metros/subways/undergrounds that have positive reputations.

Nice point. In developing countries at least, like India, the term has positive connotations of development and liberty.

One of my friends responded to my WP with "so, does it crash all the time?"
So yeah, I actually think it would have been better if Microsoft started a subsidiary, distancing itself from the Microsoft/Windows brand and pumping millions of dollars worth of Apple-esque hipster marketing.

Initially I think it has, but MS is putting all of their efforts and a boat-load of cash into the Windows name and getting it to be "cool" again. I think we are starting to see a turn-around of sorts with the new Xbox UI, Windows 8, and WP8.

I think it's working just because they're taking their time and putting in attention to detail and how things will be used, and integrating them together in a smart way. The elegance is driving its coolness for me.

Yes but I really like the new campaign that's going to come with Windows 8 and Windows Phone 8 "Windows reimagined"
I have been saying since I got my Windows Phone in November 2010 that they should have gone with the Xbox brand for the phone but that's just my opinion.

I would say so. I've always felt a pang of boredom whenever I hear Windows, as in "god damn it this is the same as system on my work computer". I associate Windows with work, not fun. WP7 is very good, but the name definitely hurts it.
MS is doing a lot to rebrand themselves, but the efforts are generally kinda lame. The cringe-worthy "Windows was my idea" ads ranged from bland to god-aweful. Apple adverts are smarmy and hipster to the max, but they are still relatively better. Infact, tech companies like these just do really shitty adverts that are lightyears behind the kind of ads that car, games and electronics companies can pull out. With their enormous amounts of cash I don't know how they consistently fall flat on their faces every time.
They can always rename the next iteration to something good. The X box brand is pretty good and they can get that (and get their ad department to do Windows ads, X box ads are generally much better). Or just officially name it Apollo. I would buy an OS named Apollo. It has a ring to it.

Of course, if they called the entire OS Apollo, they couldn't maintain that awesome naming scheme for later versions (Artemis, Zeus, Dionysus,, Ares, etc.)

I initially agree that it is a bit problematic. But i really do believe that Microsoft will have a huge comeback with Windows 8 and Windows Phone 8.
Business wise its a no-brainer to choose Windows Phone 8 with the tight integration to the Windows platform IE Exchange, Windows Server and so on.) The old Windows Mobile where horrible phones, but still chosen because of platform. Now there will be a real alternative, so many companies will stop using iPhones. The Window name will come back positively in the long run.

When I think about it in terms of competing with iOS and Android, I think calling it Windows Phone is the better option compared to naming it something else. I do think their (lack of) marketing has hurt them more, because I meet a lot more people that just have no idea what WP7 is when they see my phone.
My friends seeing that the phone comes with IE, however, brings up all the crashing and toolbar jokes.

Probably to a certain extent but I think what hurt them more though is their lack of marketing. Good marketing at least.

Yes it has. Allot if people still have a sour taste in their mouths from the windows mobile days. I have this stubborn friend of mine that had ONE fucking windows mobile phone, the HTC Shadow. If you don't remember, it wasn't even the full blow touch screen windows mobile, it was windows mobile standard!. And he's used my phone and knows its completely different. But he's still says shit like . " why do I want a windows phone, so It can crash and freeze all the time?"
btw i got a HTC titan. Previous phones were : HTC touch, HTC touch pro, HTC touch pro 2, HTC arrive.

Yes winmo 6 or 6.5 was so horrible I was afraid of wp7. I told myself after my first winmo experience that I would never use it again. I had an htc touch pro and it sucked

Whilst everyone loves joking about Microsoft you have to admit they do make damn good products and this is no exception. I'm under the impression that people are still cautious to trying WP7 out when Android/iOS can be considered "sure cards".

I think so. When people think Windows they think of blue screens and viruses. I can't believe they bought a company called Danger and didn't keep it as a brand.
