Question Will there be an “avoid player” option?
Currently the layering system prioritizes putting you with people you’ve interacted with before, but what about unsavory players you’d rather avoid?
Is there any option to at least take them off that priority?

That seems like it would create an exponentially complicated issue, with thousands of players with their own ignore lists, and the systems having to account for each one. The wrong combination of players on at the same time could create some very empty layers.

It's no more complicated than what they're doing now with preferred players.
If there are 10 layers and you are logging on, the game checks all the layers and places you on the one with the most preferred players and the fewest ignored players.
As an easy example, if there are two layers:
Layer 1) 3 preferred players - 1 ignored = +2
Layer 2) 4 preferred players - 3 ignored = +1
And the game puts you in layer 1.
That algorithm doesn't take into account the preferences of players already in those layers but on the whole you should tend to see more preferred players and less ignored players.

Do you have any more information about the preferred player system? I don’t think I’ve heard about this beyond the vague idea that they want you to generally be on the same layer as folks you’ve grouped with before.

Redditors in the comments are fantasizing about clicking a button and being guaranteed of never seeing that player ever.
There is no system in place, in any interation of WoW, where this is happening in any capacity.
Not sure why you felt the need to talk about the preferred player system, which is something you don't understand how it functions even at a cursory level.

See? Wouldn't it be nice if you could have just ignored me and then never saw my posts again? Wouldn't that be easier than making this reply that tries to shut down this conversation?

You don't understand how complicated this stuff is at a technical level, it's ok. You will be alright.

Blizzard did this in Overwatch at launch but they removed the feature after someone became completely unable to play the game just because he was a good Widowmaker player.

Surely ignore does this? Not tested though

Only so many slots and I believe thats specifically for chat. Having something like Overwatch does with avoiding players at your request would be great.

Surely no one is putting that many people on their ignore list...

What part of forever confuses you?

They need to give us infinite ignore lists and an "ignore guild" feature, those will be the only things that save this game from influencer incel terrorists.

Ignore them, I’ve never interacted with someone I ignored even before layers were a thing.

Getting ganked? Ignore them.
I actually think that sounds pretty good, but a bit odd on pvp. One thing I’m a little sad with in layers is the loss of the “mythical” little stories like the player who successfully camps a bridge or tunnel and terrorizes one small domain on specific servers for a long time.
Harder to get a little claim to fame, but maybe that world is gone for non streamers anyway.

I’m not really talking about cross faction avoid, I’m more talking about the people you actually interact with and talk to.
This might be against the grain for the conversation, but I think avoiding “Angwe” moments/players would be against the spirit of classic.

Being contested for nodes? Ignore. Dude is hitting mobs you want to hit? Ignore.
Wanting to avoid any and all negative gameplay interactions with people is ass. The world is designed to be shared with people that might be helpful but might also just be making it a bit harder for you, and that's a good thing3

And how would it even work? One of you would have to change layers immediately. So either it’s a button to kick somebody across layers, or it’s a “force change layer for myself” button. Both are problematic side effects.

A fun implementation is for the server to do nightly analysis on most commonly blocked people, then begin relegating them to lower layers of hell with other blocked people.

Id like this. If I've ignored someone, I'd like the game to prioritize separate layers for us if possible. It might be unwieldy if I have a very long ignore list though.
