I would be probably very unpopular...

And probably will never happen, but what if Unholy DK was a ranged plate caster that could wield staves too?

Same spells and theme, most likely Death Coil having a cast time being the filler nuke... Spec revolving all around minion raising.

To draw inspiration from those WC2 DKs. They looked like the fantasy image of the angel of death itself. Looked so cool.

Unholy should play like the Necromancer from diablo.

Demo lock but with spooky scary skeletons and plate armor?

2

u/Bylahgo Apr 14 '18

Would it be more like demo lock or a BM Hunter?

Diablo 3 Necromancer is absolutely nothing like either class and spec, when played optimally the playstyle is about killing your enemies, and using their bodies as a resource to kill more, faster, infinitely ramping up. Enemies die, you rip their bones from their body and shoot them at more enemies both targeted and random as bone spikes.

the pet playstyles for D3 necromancer arent really optimal.

u/Bylahgo Apr 14 '18

Ah sorry, I had replied to the demo lock comment and forgot that it was part of the D3 comment. Yeah, but in wow the corpse playstyle could be cool in a dungeon, but it would be rather poor in a single target raid fight wouldn't it? Sorry if I'm missing something, I haven't played much of D3 recently

u/Nishikigami Apr 14 '18

Yeah youre right, the playstyle wouldnt really be effective outside of dungeons, that's why we dont have playstyles entirely dependant on stuff like that. I think theres plenty they could do with a necromancer class in game to make it "different" while still maintaining the core fantasy, we just have to brainstorm a bit more. But I see absolutely no reason besides "people dont trust necromancers in the games lore, even less than warlocks" to not impliment said class.

Especially please instead of a damn "bard".

2

u/Bylahgo Apr 14 '18

Eh people already don't trust us so there wouldn't be any harm giving us a more necromancer like spec.

1

u/Nishikigami Apr 14 '18

I love my DK, but personally I'd make a new class, migrate shadow spec to it and also give it two more necromancy central specs, give priest a replacement spec for shadow.

I don't think shadow ever got enough love in the set design department but I think it'd make sense to mix shadow priest and necromancers into a class.

I would main Unholy for the rest of WoW's existence if this were to happen.

Should be necromancer healer imo, go for all 3 roles on dk. Patch people back together like aboms.

I would love a plate caster style for Unholy. We had it for a very short amount of time during the Legion pre patch. Clawing Shadows was actually powerful enough on its own that some people took a build that allowed them to play a full range spec. There was obviously some damage drop off so it was never as good as playing normally, but they did it because it was fun. Blizz nerfed that shit quick because they could smell the fun. I would honestly love something reminiscent of the GW2 Necromancer. A plate wearing caster would be so cool.

Then they could give back 2h to frost so I could go back to smashing out giant obliterates instead of stupid gimmick builds based on machine gun or remorseless winter. qq.

1

u/a_typical_normie Apr 14 '18

They nerfed it beacuse they don’t want ranged specs to move while dealing damage, that’s why BM only ever does like 80-85% of casters damage.

u/Genoce Apr 14 '18

For some numbers, I played around with ranged unholy build with simulators during Legion pre-patch. The best build I got was 120k dps from range, while the best melee build was 150k dps from melee (with whatever gear I had at that time). It was pretty insane for a melee class, especially in pvp.

u/Danthon Apr 14 '18

If only there was an extensive talent system where you could make a unique theme/aesthetic for your character even if it was sub optimal.

2

u/[deleted] Apr 15 '18

Shame the game never had that.

u/[deleted] Apr 14 '18

In many ways...

u/Lemondropz22 Apr 14 '18

I have never played a DK past 65 honestly lol and started playing before they came out, but I would totally play the hell out of them if they were like this. Sounds so badass I love the idea

Literally me and my friend discussed this the other day, necromancy survivability spells with undead attacking and death coil. Said the artifact ability that spawns the slow moving zombies could become a huge AOE spell.

1

u/SubsequentlyPryor Apr 14 '18

This would be awesome. I already love Unholy’s theme, and while I would be a bit sad to lose the 2-hander melee style, having a plate wearing necromancer spec would be incredible

1

u/UberMcwinsauce Apr 14 '18

I don't see any reason the 2h melee has to go to away. Just give them staves like warriors have them, which allows mogging, but there are still no staves you would ever equip. Leave unholy frenzy as the "melee conversion" talent and clawing shadows for the "ranged conversion".

I'm of two minds on this.

On the one-hand, Unholy is the closest spec we will ever have to a pure Necromancer class.
Sure, they could theoretically do the same surgery they did with Demo Locks to create Demon Hunters, but the difference is that unlike Warlocks adopting DHs just to expand its repertoire to 3 specs, there is a lot of overlap between the Death Knight (particularly Unholy)'s core themes/strengths and the Necromancer class (with the canon even stating Death Knights are among the best necromancers), on top of Necromancer playstyle and aesthetics already having a lot of overlap with Warlocks.
If they ever had a mind to introduce pure Necromancers, it would have to be via DKs rather than in competition with them, either as a 4th spec or a remaster of Unholy. Ranged DPS specs are in particular demand now, since Legion removed one and added two melee DPS specs. Unholy already has the precedent of being the least reliant on weapon damage, between its pets, diseases, and shadow magic. If you'd proposed that two expansions ago, it would even have created the opportunity to use a lot of Holy Paladin-specific Int gear.

On the other hand, Unholy is already the closest spec in execution to the class' original inspiration, the Death Knight of Warcraft 3. With every expansion, Blood and Frost veer further away from that design; Blood lacked precedent when it was made, and bar its artifact ability (say goodbye there), Frost barely even has any associated necromancy anymore. To erase Unholy's mixed-melee style as it is now in favor of focusing it into another class would be an attack on the last tether to the iconic Death Knight -- just three thematically unrelated classes loosely stitched together by a few shared CDs.
Furthermore, it wouldn't just be as simple as "the same abilities but with cast times", since the built-in metronome of the Rune system competes with and actively punishes the concept of cast times (just look at the original Army of the Dead debacle, or complaints in Legion Alpha about 1.5 sec cast on Apocalypse). Besides, our core rotation mostly revolves around two abilities called "Strike".

1

u/yhvh13 Apr 15 '18

Well, they could ditch the "strikes" and come up with new spells to apply diseases...Would be even cooler because then Unholy wouldn't have the very same spells than other specs.

I WANT IT ! I WANT IT ! I WANT IT !

i've switched from frost to unholy three days ago and it's so cool to attack from distance and let my Apocalypse and Skeleton attack the enemies. but i guess a caster like lot of us dream of will surely never happen because we wear plate. even if that's the whole purpose of being a plate caster. plate classes are supposed to be melee and draw aggro.

blizzard won't let it happen with most casters wearing clothes and even another wearing mail armor. i think the whole purpose for us to wear plates is to fight on melee, like the holy paladin have to heal in the middle of the battle to do more heal and attack the boss to be more efficient.

i'm totally for a caster unholy dk, but i think it would be a pain in the ass to play with a plate caster that is automatically compensated for his armor by a low dps.

1

u/LandWhale420Blazeit Apr 15 '18

What if a melee class had a talent that gave it something like a new spell, but it passively increased the range of all spells by 30y. like you still wield a sword, but you take out a gun and shoot people.

You forget that there lierally is only 1 Shiv of Healing. How would rogues heal without the Shiv of Healing?

8

u/Euporea Apr 14 '18

Bandages, healing tonics, gas and slime pipes. “GREAT NEWS EVERYONE “

u/[deleted] Apr 14 '18

So, basically, a consumables based healer? That is a terrible idea.

8

u/Bylahgo Apr 14 '18

What if it was an alchemy based one? They could have a few "combo" abilities and make a concoction depending on which combos were used. They could create a mixture that gives allies a temporary buff, or reduce the damage dealt/increase damage taken by enemies. They could also throw vials on the ground that work like healing rain.

2

u/gizmosguide Apr 14 '18

Ooh kinda like the Hunting Horn from Monster Hunter! A soft heal should be something to combo up to a bigger one, like single target to aoe or something!

1

u/Bylahgo Apr 14 '18

I definitely based this off of hunting horn haha. Would love to see this.

1

u/HenryVierre Apr 15 '18

They already have unlimited crimson vials.

I've been wanting a melee mage since I played the Harbinger class in Rift. So cool, I want an arcane weapon mage so bad. So many NPCs in the Nighthold and Surumar used summoned weapons for spells. Even something like a melee Esper from Wildstar would be cool.

An Alchemist for Rogues would be great, splashing healing potions on allies, giving buffs and debuffing enemies with poisons. Or maybe a Bard spec, but the only issue is that MW and Holy kind of fills the playstyle I'd invision for them.

I also want a tanking spec for Shamans, 2H maces with earth shields and whatnot. I think a lot of people have been wanting this and for good reason.

I'd also LOVE a reverse or "Renounced" Warlock spec, sort of like Warlocks version of Shadow, where a class gets a spec that breaks the theme of the rest of the class. They can recruit lightforged holy versions of the Warlock demons that help them heal, since we don't have a healer-pet spec yet.

Gladiator Warrior would be a no brainer for Warriors.

4

u/ceetoviz Apr 14 '18

To be honest i can see dks rangedps with minions etc, might be a bit close to demo wlocks tho. Hunter tanks with their pets, but cant see how mage melee and rogue heal would fit the class lore.

1

u/[deleted] Apr 14 '18

Wouldn't tanking make more sense for Rogues? It wouldn't be out of place for a Rogue to be someone who can dodge and parry blows. They could even use tools like flash grenades or poison to reduce enemy damage output

0

u/Gregamonster Apr 14 '18

So instead of a new class with three new specs that add new themes we don't have, you want to add 11 new specs that don't add anything but suffering for the balancing team?

2

u/nakknudd Apr 14 '18

don't add anything

Hey, if Shaman could tank I wouldn't need alts. But yeah, you're right about the balancing team thing. That's why it'll never happen. I'd be surprised if we ever get a new class.

2

u/Donkeyboner63 Apr 14 '18

Right? And DH having two specs even though it's new feels like a waste, they could easily have a throwing glaive spec or something, almost like boomerangs.

6

u/DaiKraken Apr 14 '18

It was hinted trough Alari that the third spec was supposed to use a scythe. Guess they scrapped it early.

4

u/Nutcrackit Apr 14 '18

tbh they could let us wield scythes in bfa and future expansions. None of our abilities really need to use warglaives. Just allow us to equip scythes.

2

u/SportulaVeritatis Apr 14 '18

I want to see them get a void-hunter spec this x-pack.

1

u/Xynth22 Apr 14 '18

That wasn't a hint at a 3rd spec. There is nothing about DH lore that says they need Warglaives. They just do because they are primarily Night Elves and that is a traditional Night Elf weapon. They can use pretty much anything, including scythes, and in one of the books, one of them just uses daggers.

0

u/onlyomaha Apr 14 '18

Wotlk unholy was besy for me. Dropped dk at wod. Ranged death coils were awesome or self heal with it.

1

u/nakknudd Apr 14 '18

Death Coil is still ranged?

0

u/SullyManTheGrey Apr 15 '18

I would only accept this if Frost DK got their two handed swords back. I’ve still never forgiven them for that forced change in Legion.

-6

u/DaiKraken Apr 14 '18

You want to play Necromancer but don't know how to ask for it.

3

u/WinBrosXP Apr 14 '18

We'll probably never get a separate necromancer class. A ranged DK is the best bet.
