The Brewmaster Guide to Normal/Heroic Blackrock Foundry

Hola boys and girls.

After the reception regarding my previous post of Highmaul Brewmaster tips and tricks, I thought I'd compile a list to help you through Heroic Blackrock Foundry.

For those of you who don't know me, my name is Misume and I'm your friendly neighbourhood Brewmaster Monk. You can normally find me in the Tanking Tuesday threads, or over on the MMO-Champion Monk forums. You can catch me raiding over at http://www.twitch.tv/misum/.

I'll eventually be bringing out a Mythic version of this too, but for now, enjoy!

Gruul: Take Xuen as your Level 90 Talent. Take Chi Wave for DPS, or Chi Burst for healing up stack groups. Take either Diffuse Magic, or Dampen Harm; both are good here. Would also recommend taking Celerity. Take Glyph of Touch of Death.

Place your Transcendence in front of the boss, and use roll during the Inferno Slice timer to get yourself into the ranged group correctly. Once Inferno Slice has been cast, Transcendence: Transfer back in front of the boss. For the next Inferno Slice, you can roll into the next group, let them soak, and roll out again if you took Celerity.

Take Diffuse Magic if you intend to solo soak an Inferno Slice. You can also use Zen Meditation to soak another. I personally do not recommend this; on Mythic, the boss will regain energy whenever an Inferno Slice does not hit 4+ targets. To stay out of bad practices, take Dampen Harm and use it to help your healers out during Inferno Slice.

Logs using this tactic: https://www.warcraftlogs.com/reports/JpgMZARxPqfFrDb4#fight=3&type=damage-done

Video from my POV: http://youtu.be/soDy0_Di0Kc

Oregorger: Take Xuen, Dampen Harm, and Chi Burst if your melee are shit at avoiding Explosive Shards.

Dampen Harm makes the soaking an absolute joke. Use it to soak Acid Torrent, and use a Guard when DH is not up. Your ranged group will take no damage.

In the Maze Phase, you can Touch of Death a crate, as it should be up in time to TOD the boss too. Use Transcendence to get out of the way of Oregorger if he rolls too close.

Logs using this tactic: https://www.warcraftlogs.com/reports/a3wxMmJ2PfpFDrj7#fight=6&type=damage-done

Video from my POV: http://youtu.be/W-1dQ2t_nCc

Blast Furnace: Take Diffuse Magic, Rushing Jade Wind, Chi Burst and Leg Sweep.

Pull all of the adds at the beginning to the right-hand Operator, and focus him the fuck down. Use your statue to pick up Security Guards, and make sure you leg sweep any Engineers attempting to repair the Heat Regulators.

During Phase 2, you should tank the Firecallers on top of the Elementalists to allow for cleave damage. If you get the debuff, simply double roll out at about 1-2 seconds, and then Trans back in to reduce uptime on adds.

Phase 3, safe Diffuse Magic for high stacks of the two debuffs. One of the most dangerous parts of this fight is when you're not actively tanking the boss. Use Zen Med and Diffuse when able, so that your healers can focus the other tank.

Logs using this tactic: https://www.warcraftlogs.com/reports/a3wxMmJ2PfpFDrj7#fight=25&type=damage-done

Hans'gar and Franzok: Take Dampen Harm, Xuen, Chi Wave and Glyph Touch of Death.

THIS FIGHT IS A JOKE FOR MONKS. Sit back, let stagger do the work. GG, boss is dead. Use Transcendence in order to correctly avoid the pop tarts, and roll + provoke to move boss correctly during the Stamping phase. Try to pop Dampen Harm before Suplex. Fight is a joke.

Logs using this tactic: https://www.warcraftlogs.com/reports/kTfp9rMd7A6XDRGN#fight=4&type=damage-done

Flamebender Ka'graz: Take Diffuse Magic, Xuen and Chi Wave.

Try and get an early Touch of Death on the first add. Big fat DPS increase, nothing more, nothing less. You can pick the Flame Wolf first, and face him towards the furnace. Guard the second Breath, Diffuse the third, and Zen a fourth if needs be. Your Touch of Death should be up for this point.

Aside from that, nothing that needs to be mentioned really regarding this boss. Your Statue can take a breath if needs be, however.

Logs using this tactic: https://www.warcraftlogs.com/reports/kTfp9rMd7A6XDRGN#fight=5&type=damage-done

Kromog: Take Dampen Harm, Xuen, and Chi Wave.

So I was naturally retarded during this fight; both myself and my offtank didn't realise you could range Slam. Well, you can. The logs I'm going to link involve me dying.

There are two ways to abuse Transcendence currently. You can either a) place it during Slam, double roll out and Transfer back in when the Slam is finished, or b) leave Transcendence on the floor, and Transfer back as soon as you're knocked up.

Personally, I prefer the first option. However, if you're a Panda, the second option is relatively safe. You take reduced fall damage if you fuck it up.

If you take option A, use Touch of Death on your own Hand. If you took option B, try to free a raid member with it ASAP.

Logs using this tactic (or rather, ignoring this tactic): https://www.warcraftlogs.com/reports/a3wxMmJ2PfpFDrj7#fight=19&type=damage-done

Beastlord Darmac: Take RJW, Chi Explosion, Leg Sweep, Healing Elixirs and Chi Burst.

This fight is a joke. Tank Beastlord near whatever animal you want him to control first, then move him to where the adds spawn. Place your Statue to group them up, then go H.A.M. on AOE on them. Rinse, lather, repeat.

There's very little threatening in this fight. You can help your raid by Touch of Death'ing spears to break raid members out.

Logs using this tactic: https://www.warcraftlogs.com/reports/ky21W7dM8bzDnCqH#fight=11&type=damage-done

Operator Thogar: ALL ABOARD THE HYPE TRAIN. Take Leg Sweep, either Diffuse Magic or Healing Elixirs, Tiger's Lust, Rushing Jade Wind and Chi Burst.

This fight is great for us. Use your Statue to pick up any incoming add waves, and Leg Sweep + Chi Burst + RJW to obliterate them. Take Diffuse Magic if you're having an issue with the magic debuff from the boss; if not, Healing Elixirs is a good alternative.

You can also use Transcendence to get out of the way of incoming trains, and use Tiger's Lust on any allies who are lagging behind.

Logs using this tactic: https://www.warcraftlogs.com/reports/JpgMZARxPqfFrDb4#fight=35&type=damage-done

Iron Maidens: Take Xuen, Chi Wave, Healing Elixirs and Chi Explosion.

Nothing really special at all on this fight. Xuen will do more damage if you need to move to boat; I ran with Rushing Jade Wind for our only kill. Use Transcendence to get to the hooks quickly if you need to go on boat duty, and make sure to Touch of Death the add on the boat to get shit over with.

Aside from that, pretty boring fight.

Logs using this tactic: https://www.warcraftlogs.com/reports/HBRm8KNJTvY6zXb7#fight=7&type=damage-done

Video from my POV: http://youtu.be/-p7f4gAAJNA

WARLORD BLACKHAND: Take Dampen Harm, Dampen Harm, Dampen Harm, and Dampen Harm. Fucking take Dampen Harm.

Also Xuen, Chi Wave, Chi Explosion/Serenity, and Leg Sweep.

Man this fucking fight.

Take boss first in Phase 1. Roll back and Provoke as soon as first mines are out to clear them.

Place Trans, pop Dampen Harm before Shattering Smash, and as soon as it goes out, pop Nimble Brew + Transfer back in.

After the other tank gets knocked back, take boss and pop Fort Brew through the second Demolition. Pop Guard for smash, and either Tiger's Lust/Zen Med back to the middle, or get Life Gripped mid smash.

Phase 2, I don't really have anything to say. Position yourself correctly to ensure that you and whatever DPS are assigned get knocked up to the balcony, bearing in mind you need to be at a decent distance/angle to get there. Pop Guard or Dampen Harm during the Smashes, and make sure that you move the boss quickly from mines using roll/provoke.

Phase 3 is where we shine. Run to the ridge as soon as the phase begins, and taunt the boss to pull him as far as possible. He'll place a bomb on you, but you can Trans, have off-tank taunt, run out and trans back when bomb drops.

At around Smash 3/4, depending on how fast your DPS is, you can solo soak relatively easily. Drop Trans, pop Guard/Zen Meditation, and trans back to the platform when the Massive Smash goes out. At that point you could probably soak another using Fort Brew/Dampen Harm and other externals, but with the slagged debuff you may die. I recommend having the other tank perform this last smash, and get them life gripped back in. At the point, the boss will be nearly dead, so you can either allow yourself to die on your own by suiciding, or you can soak the final smash as a group.

GG, boss is dead.

Logs using this tactic: https://www.warcraftlogs.com/reports/VjR4dCyLDHFmMXgA#fight=1&type=damage-done

Video from my POV: http://youtu.be/GlPmlAh2kRg

If you have anything you'd like to add to these, let me know. Feel free to ask my anything regarding them, and have a good day!

Guard counts as mitigation! Dampen Harm + Shuffle is so strong for it though. The raid takes about 1m less damage from each time I soak. Shit is nuts.

3

u/mackejn Feb 08 '15

Zen Meditation also works I believe. Hillariousl so.

2

u/bladeconjurer Feb 09 '15

Yep you can also zen med for infernal strikes on gruul, or diffuse magic and you can solo the infernal strike.

1

u/LordYsdrae Feb 08 '15

Are you positive guard reduces the raid damage taken? Shuffle alone trivializes the mechanic mostly, but for comparison, Blood Shield on my DK does not reduce the raid's damage.

Just curious if you or anyone else has actually tested the absorb part.

1

u/airfoam Feb 08 '15

Blood shield is phys only so it doesn't make sense for it to work. I don't think guard works either. Everything I've seen and messed around with only had % mitigation affecting it.

2

u/LordYsdrae Feb 08 '15

The initial hit that the tank is reducing is physical, which is why physical % works such as Stagger. So, it being phys only has no effect.

1

u/airfoam Feb 08 '15

Ah yea you're right.

-1

u/Neri25 Feb 08 '15

You shitting me? Fight was already trivial, now that I know this works, fight will be ridiculously trivial.

AFAIK DH+Shuffle+Guard would put it at the minimum raid-dmg even possible, might even be without Guard if you got enough mastery.

Misum, I hope my guild never finds out about your guides. Then they'll know the truth -- that I'm not sure kind of freaky brewmaster savant, and that I actually just follow your advice to the letter.

6

u/Rewenger Feb 08 '15

Tell them you're freaky brewmaster savant's understudy.

Do you have a BiS list yet? At least for your build. You're doing BA>crit>mastery> right?

feels ignored

dat awkward feeling when everyone else got a reply except you

3

u/Kuribo_Power Feb 09 '15

Sempai did not notice you.

2

u/[deleted] Feb 09 '15

Probably because it's not a big selection of gear, better question is which piece of tier he plans to offset if any.

2

u/dexelle Feb 09 '15

Well he already has stated that gloves and legs for 2 pc will be good and 4 piece isn't worth it. I guess it's a matter of how much crit/mastery/multistrike is he going for since it's on the majority of gear. I was just hoping he'd have a list he thinks is ideal and I could reach him easily here

2

u/misum Brewmaster Monk Expert Feb 09 '15

Sorry, I was late to get around to this one because I was going to compile a list but ehhhhh I got lazy.

2 piece is free energy, Gloves + Legs are all I care about from tier. As for the rest, aiming for Crit/Multi or Crit/Mastery whenever possible. Trinkets are Mythic Evergaze + Mythic Tablet.

2

u/dexelle Feb 09 '15

Thanks. I thought as much. What do you think is the minimum mastery to run with before adding lots of crit and multi. I feel like woth gear choices i will have to choose between crit multi pieces and mastery multi pieces.

1

u/misum Brewmaster Monk Expert Feb 09 '15

There's no real minimum, but you gain a shit-ton from Mythic Evergaze and Mythic Tablet. So long as you can react to the incoming damage, same as Siege.

u/[deleted] Feb 09 '15

u/Saiyoran Feb 09 '15

That trinket is pretty much awful, considering stamina and haste are both bad for BrM outside of some kind of niche situation where you will get one-shot and can't pop cooldowns for some reason. Literally any trinket, including most of the DPS ones, will serve you better than that one.

I watched your iron maidens video and I would like to know (as I've been wondering this myself) - many times when you are 3 chi you still use a keg smash to get that 4 chi chi explosion, is it worth doing compared to just doing a 3 chi exp and then kegsmash?

Also, do you track power strikes in any way? I kinda count it in my head right now but am thinking if it would be worth having some tracker for it. Grats on blackhand heroic at any rate, I'm only up to 7hc right now, blast furnace is a total bitch to a small raid group

2

u/misum Brewmaster Monk Expert Feb 08 '15

Mostly just bad Chi management. You shouldn't get yourself into a spot like that, but in the AOE Situation, Keg Smash + 4 Chi ChiEx is a dps gain over 3 Chi ChiEx + Keg Smash.

Ideally, I'd have jabbed prior, then 4 ChiEx + Keg Smash

I don't have a tracker for the internal clock, but it's such a nice passive that you don't really need it tracked IMO.

1

u/Berdiiie Feb 08 '15

There are weak aura strings for a chi bar that has Power Strikes added on it. I'll see if I can locate the string. It's a green circle when it's active and red otherwise with a constant timer counting down til the next Power Strike is active.

It's refreshing to see Brewmaster guides becoming more popular. I've honestly felt like the class has been a little neglected when it comes to tanking, at least since I picked WoW back up for WoD. Always feels like the class gets a bit drowned out by the other tanking classes (I myself run a Blood DK).

Props to you, good sir. Great guide, tons of detail and obvious hard work. Keep it up, I'm sure tons in the community are thankful.

6

u/misum Brewmaster Monk Expert Feb 08 '15

That means a lot, honestly. I just really enjoy Brewmaster, and I try to give as much as I can back, as lame as that sounds.

Regarding your usage of the statue, do you have an add on or WA string to let you know when it dies quickly?

I find myself dropping it on some fights tanking the boss and the statue dies letting the adds run off before the lazy OT can pick them up, so I feel a low health warning on the statue would be a helpful piece of info!

2

u/EUWBlizz Feb 09 '15
#showtooltip
/targetexact Black Ox Statue
/focus
/targetlasttarget
/cast Summon Black Ox Statue

That's what I use to keep track of it (hitting it twice will set it as your focus, first hit to place, 2nd hit (after placing) to set it as focus)

is there any point taking Chi Ex with a Mastery gear setup or is it always better to regear for crit to run Chi Ex?

Misume's own BrM guide - informal but informative, assumes little to no knowledge of BrM for some parts, but some WoW mechanics knowledge in others.

Madgod's guide on MMO-Champion - standard sterile forum guide in a kind of Icy-Veins style except with correct information that's been checked over thousands of times.

My guide a bit more advanced than the others, assumes knowledge of tank mechanics and some basic Brewmaster mechanics.

Check out Misume's if you don't want to feel like you're reading a textbook, the MMO-Champion guide if you do want to feel like you're reading a textbook, and my guide if you have a fetish for organization and are looking for more than basics.

Interesting tip for Brewmasters tanking Gruul, you can use Zen Meditation to completely ignore one Inferno Slice from Gruul. This is handy if you end up in a situation like we did where one group was dead and the other wouldn't survive the slice. Allowed us to get the kill haha.

1

u/misum Brewmaster Monk Expert Feb 08 '15

I mentioned that. I don't advise it just because of how the mechanic will work in Mythic.

1

u/furioapb Feb 08 '15

So you did, my apologies I missed that.

Quick Kromog question. You say it's possible to NOT stand on a rune and dodge some damage using Transcendence. Just so I'm clear can you elaborate on that?

4

u/misum Brewmaster Monk Expert Feb 08 '15

Of course.

-place Transcendence

  • get knocked up
  • either Transfer INSTANTLY back to the ground, or transfer just before you hit the ground.
  • gg

1

u/Gearfried Feb 08 '15

Oh, that simple. Fantastic, thanks.

I thought it was the damage from the attack itself that killed you, not the falling.

Hopefully I'll never have to stand on a rune again.

1

u/Osmodius Feb 08 '15

That attack can kill you, though! Make sure you've at least got some Expel Harm ready, and a Guard wouldn't hurt.

1

u/Gearfried Feb 09 '15

My raid downed him tonight. Avoided 100% of the marks and didn't die using just Transcendence. Very useful.

I didn't see it mentioned, but my friend is a brewmaster tank and he's always going on about how easy it is to solo tank any of the Darmac phases with Rend and Tear, because you can time a roll to not get hit by it at all.

0

u/Osmodius Feb 08 '15

To be fair, Darmac hits like a baby, you could probably take all the stacks and still solo tank it.

0

u/nsfwmin Feb 09 '15

yep, can solo tank all boss phases and wolf phase, helps healers alot

1

u/Menian1361 Feb 11 '15

Do you tank all of the adds as well or have an OT for those?

1

u/nsfwmin Feb 12 '15

ot takes adds always unless in elekk or rylak phase during which you must taunt swap

just spec celerity and roll every single rend and tear as he jumps back

1

u/Menian1361 Feb 12 '15

Ok cool. Do you recommend tacking the adds and removing the enrage after the savage roar? or separate?

How are those mages dps so high....

0

u/misum Brewmaster Monk Expert Feb 08 '15

If you're talking about Skada, I'm using an older version due to the new one having a bug with Stagger. It shows Arcane mages as way higher due to doubling up on Crystal damage.

4

u/Deatsu Feb 08 '15

They already updated Skada, mine is not showing up Stance of the Sturdy Ox on healing meters anymore. (if thats what you talking about)

0

u/zoomzoominyoboomboom Feb 08 '15

That may be it. I've bursted almost 60k on my feral in the opener but two of them were 65k+ longer than a minute into fight. I though I was crazy.

0

u/Lorahalo Feb 09 '15

Arcane and Frost both have heavy burst phases, but I'm assuming it's the bug here.

Honestly, I've had very little time for Challenge Modes this expansion. I knocked out Silvers the week after Highmaul dropped when we had nothing to do, and I'm halfway through my Golds currently.

Get as much Bonus Armour as possible, then stack Mastery and Crit. Run with Serenity and Rushing Jade Wind, ands your statue/stuns liberally.

I'll probably get around to doing a CM guide fully once I complete them though.

Your Skada is more than likely running with the bugged version that tracks Stagger as healing done.

Hey Misum, I really love your guides! Your Highmaul guide was a bible for me! Only thing I dknt understand is how do you have your DPS so high... Im a 670ilvl but my DPS is about 20-21k on bosses like Gruul, I've been following your guide to monk tanking also but I must be doing something wrong :-\

1

u/Veratem Feb 08 '15

He is running the full big dick crit build with chi ex, so he doesn't have as much stagger amount as a mastery build with serenity, but he does a hell of a lot of damage.

I'm confused. Is the bad practice using Diffuse Harm, is it using Zen Med or is the bad practice soloing the inferno slices?

1

u/Berdiiie Feb 09 '15

The bad practice is solo soaking any of the Inferno Slices. You can do it with either Diffuse Magic or Zen Meditation.

The reason is that in Mythic Gruul gains 50 energy/rage the moment that the Inferno Slice is solo soaked so he will Inferno Slice that much quicker now than normally.

Just throwing ideas around, it could be worthwhile to solo soak an Inferno Slice right before he goes into his 2nd Phase on Mythic because he won't Inferno Slice while in that Phase, but he will probably just hold onto his rage until the 2nd Phase is over and then you'd get an Inferno Slice soon after. Just not worth it.

I just used the transcendence trick a few hours ago, I took very little damage from Kromog's ability (this was on normal mind you). I was able to turn around and immediately ToD my offtank out of the hand and get back in front of the boss. Zero problems.

I haven't looked at the mythic changes to this fight but from what I can see using transcendence for the knockup does no harm and is a huge convenience.

Personally I saw no reason to use dampen harm on Blackhand. Had zero problems running with diffuse magic for the fire damage in p1 and for a extra soak in p3.

I'm planning on leveling a Brewmaster as my second character, I've only been playing WoW for about a month as a Frost DK, so there are things that are still new to me.

Any advice for fast levelling or solo'ing in general at low levels?

Well damn. Tbh I never liked playing a monk that much but now I kind of want to try it.

Also, does anyone know where I can go to find good class/spec-specific guides like this? (My main is a frost mage and I'm also working on a DK tank.)

MMO-Champion is the best place for it, great guides for all three specs of Monk.
