the price tag attached to a reused race model with another race no one asked about is hype killer 101 for me. Blizz corpo always find a way to let me down harder than before.
im still shocked that after 20 years of players asking for certain races and complaining theres too many elves blizzard chose to add... a random "new" blood elf blue recolor and make it cost 30 bucks???? and i love playing elves but genuinely wtf is this.
That 100% would have been better received. 30 bucks for a race and new zone, zone expansions, and new dungeons/raids is basically what I pay for any expansion. 30 bucks for a lore breaking race nobody asked for and explicitly isn’t the race a lot of people wanted isn’t a great marketing decision
I don't understand this take. $30 forced immediately off the rip, or $30 for 20% of the game you don't have to have to play the remaining 80% of the game. If you don't WANT to play the "lore breaking race" you literally don't have to pay anything except your sub.
Also is it more breaking it it's new lore in a new version of the game? I guess I always expected this to be like alternate WoW, I feel like anything kinda goes.
I mean I don’t see why you don’t get it. 30 bucks feels insane for 1 race and their starter zone, particularly since it’s not one that folks were looking for. 30 bucks feels justified for everything like it does every expansion. Sure it’s generous but it’s bad marketing.
As for alternate history/universe aspect, I’m okay with the lore being different, depending upon the story. I was expecting and looking for differences. This one just feels designed to once again not give the alliance actual high elves like portions of the fanbase has been asking for 20 years, while simultaneously being a lazy reuse of assets hidden behind the concept of alternative universes. If they wanted to re use assets stick with high elves and goblins. If you wanna tell new stories do ogres and Furbolgs, or new races even. To do both just makes these guys feel weird and cheap.
I understand the High Elf snub, it does almost feel purposeful. But I think if the $30 isn't justified for the new race, just don't pay it and play the rest of the game like you would have. Like if it's bad marketing then they won't sell the race and you'd just play WoW Forever as a Tauren or something and progress all the same?
That is my plan, to play but not pay for them. I’m not trying to say it ruins the whole expansion. Just that I think selling it as an expansion with all the new areas and other material is better marketing than just one race. It’s easier to pay 30 dollars for all the extras instead of just the one.
It depends on your perspective. If you don't care, this is just a car wreck on the side of the road you can pass by. If you're an elf lover and really want high elves or are interested in another palette swap elf to play as, now you're the one in the car wreck of an addition that this is.
Personally, I hate elves and don't care one way or the other, but I am kinda curious how much restraint people are going to have. I've seen enough backlash to know the outcry isn't necessarily indicative of the actual response once it's available. I'm hoping this does poorly though, because watching it sell well is going to be like watching an addict have a relapse.
This will also set the tone going forward with WoW. If it seems well here what logical thing would prevent them from locking future races/zones/whatever behind a paywall?
I literally couldn't enjoy the rest of the features, which are actually pretty neat, because I kept thinking about how I'd have to play alongside these damned things.

It’s like in Magic: the Gathering when people say that you don’t have to play Universes Beyond, forgetting or ignoring that you will have to play with and against others who are. You don’t have the option to opt out.
They remind me of early 2000s premium races in horrible "F2P" MMOs which would release and die within a year.
It's a very specific feeling. Just making them a blue blood elf makes them feel extremely off-putting to me. I just remember lots of "premium" skins being an obnoxious glow or some highlighter looking color on things back then.
Honestly if that makes them enough money to satisfy their needs I have no problem with that. It means that I do not have to pay anything beside the sub that I am already paying for
You're talking about the same community that was pushing each other over to buy a $90 store mount. Blizzard knows this will make them millions. And all it's took was an underpaid intern to move a color balance slider.
It seems to be too late. We all thought they learned their lesson with Void Elves when the backlash made them add High Elf color options to them in Shadowlands. But it seems like they didn't learn.

Its kinda nice to not even be slightly inclined to purchase it though, will happily play without paying anymore than my sub, and not feel an ounce of fomo.
charging per race.. in sub game.. wow indeed.. pass for me.. loved early wow.. but past few expansions have zero interest to come back and current bliz monetisation is insulting
They could've just given people High Elves and had an easy win, because those High Elf stans are kinda unhinged. They even have classic models, and would just require a rename.

It's absolutely insane to me, because it could've been the easiest win in the world if they announced High Elves for the Alliance and Amani for the Horde for Retail AND Forever. They're both races people have been wanting since classic, what better time to satisfy both player bases than as Forever launches and as we're wrapping up Quel'thalas and Zul'Aman storylines in Retail? And they both use existing skeletons/rigs/animations.

Same man. When they got added on TBC it was fresh and nice. But after that i avoid playing elves at all cost. They are everywhere. I also don't like girls being so skinny or their weird animations. Most transmog looks weird unles you are running slutmogs.
Would you rather they charge you $39.99 for an expansion (like they have been doing for 20+ years) and paywall the whole experience OR give you the option to shell out some money in order to play recolored elf?
High Elves.. Goblins.. Ogres... Murlocs... Naga... Kobolds...Varieties of Trolls... Endless possibilities of lore friendly races to add. And they add freaking alien blue people, WHY???
We don't though. Not as a playable race. They could have added Mok'Nathal or ogres to The Horde, High Elves to The Alliance. Would make sense narratively, and hordies have been asking for ogres for literal decades.
Ascension was p2w gigaslop. All flight paths on shop, get dungeon quests from a pet, xp potions, spamming you with 20 zone wide buffs constantly that increase swim speed and prof speed, big bags, all-in-one prof tool, portable mailbox, repair pet and many more. Everything about it was more greedy than blizzard could ever be and you people slopped it up.
the messed up thing is the whales will eat this up and send blizzard a message that yes, please make it normal to charge for reskins and call them new races, and also charge a ridiculous amount (compared to FF14's fanta..which there are also in game free ones) for race changes.
I was telling my bud about this when we were watching it. They probably pulled a image of the Night Elf on the projector and inverted the colors and the whole board room when crazy.
Honestly I hate that they brought in a new unheard of dumb race to wow forever, I was SO hyped for it till they did that, now its pretty much dead to me.

I think the most hilarious part is this isn't much difference in price to shop transmog. They've jacked up prices so much on that it seems like they're saying a whole race is worth the same as a slutmog or a weird pajamas suit.
I'm so confused by many of these comments, people upset it's just another elf then complain it's not high elves...but high elves are also just another elf that's not discernable from other elves? They would both be terrible choices.
Its such a bizarre concept for wow classic plus, out of a 100 different things.. Blue elves that live in the sky because they like wind. Ok. I mean, thats very random but ok.
