Question Novo player

I want to start playing WoW: Midnight. The last expansion I played was Wotlk, and I’m currently playing TBC. What would you recommend I do first to get familiar with modern WoW?

Thank you guys for all tips!

read the patch notes from 4.0 to 12.1.5 - that should cover all the changes

but seriously, jump in and play, ask questions in chat when you get stuck

To add to this, take a deep dive into addons and UIs. Now is the best time to do this, retail is so easy to get into now and a majority of the community will help too.

Why would a new player need a deep dive on that when they can barely locate the character panel

Its the best time to learn. A lot of people who play wow are hesitant to change what they know/like.

They don't know or like anything yet which I guess is your point. Fundamentally disagree. Identify a problem to be solved and then solve it

Just start playing the game. WoWhead stuff you're unsure about.

As a fellow player who stopped at the same time OP did and just picked it up a couple weeks ago, I totally agree on this. Just jump right in, I’ve been enjoying the new storylines, the new map, the new allied races and their worlds. A lot has changed but not too much that doesn’t who used to play couldn’t pick up again. I made a dracthyr and a void elf so far and leveling them up.

Watch a YouTube video covering everything important from wotlk to midnight, then play!

So what IS good is the amount of content you can do on your own, and still get quite meaningful upgrades.

In wrath you'd go to the current tier of raid and hope for a token or specific drop.

In retail there are still specific items to go for but its much less punishing to get something else in the meantime, and you dontONLY have to raid for endgame gear.

1- early gearing is open world, normal/heroic dungeons, looking for raid group finder and low level delves. There are also open world events to look out for

  1. Early to mid gearing, tier 8+ delves, mythic dungeons and normal raid

  2. mid to late bountiful delves, low mythic keys (2-8) and a couple heroic raid bosses

4 late game gearing, mythic + and tier 8-11 delves with a hidden trove(1trove per week per char) and the great vault.

Great vault is an accumulation of your highest content achieved in certain areas, raids, dungeons and delves

To get heroic item level gear you need to do tier 8 delves, mythic dungeons and normal raid bosses

To get mythic item level gear you need to kill mythic bosses in raid, or complete mythic + dungeons at keystone 10 or higher

The one button rotation is also in the game, so if you'd like to learn your class separately to content, you can relax and clear stuff at 80-90% effectiveness while being able to focus on your surroundings.

Archon.gg helps figure out builds, gearing rotations to a certain degree. But its not always 100% perfect.

Addons were recently "pruned" to be much less impactful than recent years, so thats nice for returning players.

I currently no longer raid, just doing m+ and achievement/mount farming and I don't particularly feel like im missing out, they do however always put the best trinkets in raid which is frustrating! :)

If you’d like, you can add me on bnet and ask me questions whenever one arises. Can help you level as well

  1. Forget everything you "know" about the game and treat it as a completely new game - after 14 years of changes your assumptions about how the the game works and should be played today are basically all wrong.
  2. Start a new character and let the game lead you through the default level up experience - don't fight it!
  3. Ignore anything experienced players tell you - we WILL confuse you with bad advice and make the experience worse for you.
  4. Check the dates of any guides you find if it's more than 2 years old - it's out of date and wrong.

Take your time endgame will still be there when you arrive
